संजय उवाच ततः क्रुद्धा महाराज सौबलस्य पदानुगाः त्यक्त्वा जीवितमाक्रन्दे पाण्डवान्पर्यवारयन्

Sañjaya said: O great king! Saubala's followers were enraged. Ready to give up their lives, they repulsed the Pāṇḍava-s.

संजय ने कहा: हे महान राजा! सौबाला के अनुयायी क्रोधित हो गये। अपने प्राण त्यागने को तैयार होकर, उन्होंने पांडवों को खदेड़ दिया।

तानर्जुनः प्रत्यगृह्णात्सहदेवजये धृतः भीमसेनश्च तेजस्वी क्रुद्धाशीविषदर्शनः

Wishing to support Sahadeva in his victory, Arjuna and the spirited Bhīmasena, who looked like an angry and virulent serpent, received them.

अपनी जीत में सहदेव का समर्थन करने की इच्छा से, अर्जुन और उत्साही भीमसेन, जो एक क्रोधित और विषैले सांप की तरह दिखते थे, ने उनका स्वागत किया।

शक्त्यृष्टिप्रासहस्तानां सहदेवं जिघांसताम् संकल्पमकरोन्मोघं गाण्डीवेन धनंजयः

They wished to kill Sahadeva, with javelins, swords and spears in their hands. But with Gāṇḍīva, Dhanañjayā rendered their resolution unsuccessful.

वे हाथों में भाला, तलवार और भाले लेकर सहदेव को मारना चाहते थे। लेकिन गांडीव के साथ, धनंजय ने उनके संकल्प को असफल कर दिया।

प्रगृहीतायुधान्बाहून्योधानामभिधावताम् भल्लैश्चिच्छेद बीभत्सुः शिरांस्यपि हयानपि

With weapons in their hands, those warriors attacked. However, with broad-headed arrows, Bībhatsu severed their heads and their horses.

हाथों में हथियार लेकर उन योद्धाओं ने आक्रमण कर दिया। हालाँकि, बीभात्सु ने चौड़े सिर वाले तीरों से उनके सिर और उनके घोड़ों को काट दिया।

ते हताः प्रत्यपद्यन्त वसुधां विगतासवः त्वरिता लोकवीरेण प्रहताः सव्यसाचिना

They were slain and lay down on the ground, deprived of their lives. Spiritedly, Savyasachi struck those brave men of the world.

वे मारे गये और अपने प्राणों से वंचित होकर भूमि पर लेट गये। सव्यसाची ने उत्साहपूर्वक विश्व के उन शूरवीरों पर प्रहार किया।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा दृष्ट्वा स्वबलसंक्षयम् हतशेषान्समानीय क्रुद्धो रथशतान्विभो

King Duryodhana saw that his own army was being destroyed. O lord! He angrily rallied the one hundred chariots that still remained.

राजा दुर्योधन ने देखा कि उसकी अपनी सेना नष्ट हो रही है। हे भगवान! उसने क्रोधपूर्वक बचे हुए एक सौ रथों को इकट्ठा कर लिया।

कुञ्जरांश्च हयांश्चैव पादातांश्च परंतप उवाच सहितान्सर्वान्धार्तराष्ट्र इदं वचः

O scorcher of enemies! He spoke these words to all the assembled army of the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the elephants, the horses and the foot soldiers.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! ये शब्द उन्होंने धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र की समस्त एकत्रित सेना, हाथियों, घोड़ों और पैदल सैनिकों से कहे।

समासाद्य रणे सर्वान्पाण्डवान्ससुहृद्गणान् पाञ्चाल्यं चापि सबलं हत्वा शीघ्रं निवर्तत

"In the battle, attack all the Pāṇḍava-s and their wellwishers, with Pāñcāla and his army. Return after swiftly slaying them."

"युद्ध में, पंचाल और उसकी सेना के साथ सभी पांडवों और उनके शुभचिंतकों पर हमला करें। उन्हें तेजी से मारकर लौट आएं।"

तस्य ते शिरसा गृह्य वचनं युद्धदुर्मदाः प्रत्युद्ययू रणे पार्थांस्तव पुत्रस्य शासनात्

Unassailable in battle, they accepted those instructions. On your son's command, they attacked the Pārtha-s back in that encounter.

युद्ध में अजेय रहते हुए, उन्होंने उन निर्देशों को स्वीकार कर लिया। आपके पुत्र की आज्ञा से उन्होंने उस मुठभेड़ में पार्थ की पीठ पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

तानभ्यापततः शीघ्रं हतशेषान्महारणे शरैराशीविषाकारैः पाण्डवाः समवाकिरन्

In the great battle, those who were left attacked swiftly. But the Pāṇḍava-s countered them with arrows that were like venomous serpents.

इस महासंग्राम में जो बचे थे उन्होंने तेजी से आक्रमण कर दिया। लेकिन पांडवों ने उन बाणों से उनका मुकाबला किया जो विषैले सांपों के समान थे।

तत्सैन्यं भरतश्रेष्ठ मुहूर्तेन महात्मभिः अवध्यत रणं प्राप्य त्रातारं नाभ्यविन्दत प्रतिष्ठमानं तु भयान्नावतिष्ठत दंशितम्

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! In a short instant, those great-souled ones slaughtered those soldiers in the battle and they could not find a protector. Though armoured and stationed, they were full of fear.

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! थोड़े ही क्षण में उन महारथियों ने युद्ध में उन सैनिकों को मार डाला और उन्हें कोई रक्षक न मिला। हालाँकि वे बख्तरबंद और तैनात थे, फिर भी वे डर से भरे हुए थे।

अश्वैर्विपरिधावद्भिः सैन्येन रजसा वृते न प्राज्ञायन्त समरे दिशश्च प्रदिशस्तथा

The horses fled in a reverse direction and the soldiers were covered in dust. In the battle, the directions and the sub-directions could not be distinguished.

घोड़े उल्टी दिशा में भाग गये और सैनिक धूल से लथपथ हो गये। युद्ध में दिशा और उपदिशा का भेद नहीं हो पा रहा था।

ततस्तु पाण्डवानीकान्निःसृत्य बहवो जनाः अभ्यघ्नंस्तावकान्युद्धे मुहूर्तादिव भारत ततो निःशेषमभवत्तत्सैन्यं तव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In a short while, in that battle, many men emerged from the army of the Pāṇḍava-s and slaughtered those on your side. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Your soldiers were annihilated.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! थोड़ी ही देर में उस युद्ध में पाण्डवों की सेना से बहुत से लोग निकले और उन्होंने आपके पक्ष के लोगों को मार डाला। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके सैनिक नष्ट हो गये।

अक्षौहिण्यः समेतास्तु तव पुत्रस्य भारत एकादश हता युद्धे ताः प्रभो पाण्डुसृञ्जयैः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O lord! Eleven akṣauhiṇī-s had been mustered by your son and they were slaughtered in the battle by the Pāṇḍu-s and the Sṛñjaya-s.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे भगवान! आपके पुत्र द्वारा ग्यारह अक्षौहिणी एकत्रित की गई थीं और युद्ध में पाण्डु तथा सृंजय द्वारा उनका वध कर दिया गया।

तेषु राजसहस्रेषु तावकेषु महात्मसु एको दुर्योधनो राजन्नदृश्यत भृशं क्षतः

O king! Among the thousands of greatsouled kings on your side, only Duryodhana remained and he was seen to be severely wounded.

हे राजा! आपके पक्ष के हजारों महाबली राजाओं में से केवल दुर्योधन ही बचा था और वह गंभीर रूप से घायल हुआ दिखाई दे रहा था।

ततो वीक्ष्य दिशः सर्वा दृष्ट्वा शून्यां च मेदिनीम् विहीनः सर्वयोधैश्च पाण्डवान्वीक्ष्य संयुगे

He glanced in all the directions and saw that the earth had been emptied. He was bereft of all warriors and glanced at the Pāṇḍava-s in the battle, who were delighted that all their objectives had been accomplished.

उसने सभी दिशाओं में दृष्टि डाली और देखा कि पृथ्वी खाली हो गयी है। वह सभी योद्धाओं से वंचित था और उसने युद्ध में पांडवों की ओर देखा, जो प्रसन्न थे कि उनके सभी उद्देश्य पूरे हो गए थे।

मुदितान्सर्वसिद्धार्थान्नर्दमानान्समन्ततः बाणशब्दरवांश्चैव श्रुत्वा तेषां महात्मनाम्

They roared in every direction. O great king! He heard the whizzing of arrows shot by those great-souled ones.

वे हर दिशा में गर्जना करने लगे। हे महान राजा! उसने उन महात्माओं के छोड़े हुए बाणों की घरघराहट सुनी।

दुर्योधनो महाराज कश्मलेनाभिसंवृतः अपयाने मनश्चक्रे विहीनबलवाहनः

Duryodhana was overcome by depression. Devoid of soldiers and men, he resolved to retreat.

दुर्योधन अवसाद से उबर गया। सैनिकों और पुरुषों से रहित, उसने पीछे हटने का संकल्प लिया।

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच निहते मामके सैन्ये निःशेषे शिबिरे कृते पाण्डवानां बलं सूत किं नु शेषमभूत्तदा एतन्मे पृच्छतो ब्रूहि कुशलो ह्यसि संजय

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: O sūta! When my soldiers and my camps were annihilated, what was the army that still remained with the Pāṇḍava-s? I am asking you. O Sañjaya! You are skilled in recounting. Tell me.

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: हे सूत! जब मेरे सैनिक और मेरे शिविर नष्ट हो गए, तब भी पांडवों के पास कौन सी सेना बची थी? मैं तुमसे पुछ रहा हूं। हे संजय! आप हिसाब-किताब करने में कुशल हैं। मुझे बताओ।

यच्च दुर्योधनो मन्दः कृतवांस्तनयो मम बलक्षयं तथा दृष्ट्वा स एकः पृथिवीपतिः

What did my unfortunate son, Duryodhana, the lord of the earth, do, when he saw that his army had been destroyed and he was the only one left?

मेरे अभागे पुत्र, पृथ्वी के स्वामी दुर्योधन ने क्या किया, जब उसने देखा कि उसकी सेना नष्ट हो गई है और केवल वह ही बचा है?

संजय उवाच रथानां द्वे सहस्रे तु सप्त नागशतानि च पञ्च चाश्वसहस्राणि पत्तीनां च शतं शताः

Sañjaya replied: O king! Two thousand chariots, seven hundred elephants, five thousand horses and ten thousand foot soldiers

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: हे राजा! दो हजार रथ, सात सौ हाथी, पांच हजार घोड़े और दस हजार पैदल सैनिक

एतच्छेषमभूद्राजन्पाण्डवानां महद्बलम् परिगृह्य हि यद्युद्धे धृष्टद्युम्नो व्यवस्थितः

—this is what was left from the large army of the Pāṇḍava-s. Dhṛṣṭadyumna gathered them and remained stationed in the battle.

-पांडवों की विशाल सेना से यही बचा था। धृष्टद्युम्न ने उन्हें एकत्र किया और युद्ध में तैनात रहे।

एकाकी भरतश्रेष्ठ ततो दुर्योधनो नृपः नापश्यत्समरे कंचित्सहायं रथिनां वरः

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! King Duryodhana was alone. In the battle, he could not see any supreme rāṭha as his aide.

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! राजा दुर्योधन अकेला था। युद्ध में उसे अपना सहायक कोई परम रथ नजर नहीं आया।

नर्दमानान्परांश्चैव स्वबलस्य च संक्षयम् हतं स्वहयमुत्सृज्य प्राङ्मुखः प्राद्रवद्भयात्

He saw that his own army had been destroyed and that the enemy was roaring. He abandoned his horse, which had been slain. Out of fear, he retreated and fled in an eastern direction.

उसने देखा कि उसकी अपनी सेना नष्ट हो गयी है और शत्रु दहाड़ रहा है। उसने अपना घोड़ा छोड़ दिया, जो मारा गया था। डर के मारे वह पीछे हट गया और पूर्वी दिशा में भाग गया।

एकादशचमूभर्ता पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव गदामादाय तेजस्वी पदातिः प्रस्थितो ह्रदम्

Your son, Duryodhana, had been the lord of eleven hundred army divisions. With a club in his hand, the spirited one advanced on foot towards a lake.

आपका पुत्र दुर्योधन ग्यारह सौ सेना खण्डों का स्वामी था। हाथ में गदा लेकर वह उत्साही व्यक्ति पैदल ही एक झील की ओर बढ़ा।

नातिदूरं ततो गत्वा पद्भ्यामेव नराधिपः सस्मार वचनं क्षत्तुर्धर्मशीलस्य धीमतः

He had advanced on foot only for a short distance, when the lord of men remembered the words that the intelligent Kshatta, devoted to dharma, had spoken.

वह थोड़ी ही दूरी तक पैदल आगे बढ़ा था, तभी मनुष्यों के स्वामी को वे शब्द याद आये जो धर्म के प्रति समर्पित बुद्धिमान क्षत्ता ने कहे थे।

इदं नूनं महाप्राज्ञो विदुरो दृष्टवान्पुरा महद्वैशसमस्माकं क्षत्रियाणां च संयुगे

"The immensely wise Vidūra had certainly foreseen all of this earlier. Our great destruction and that of the kṣatriya-s would occur in the battle."

"अत्यंत बुद्धिमान विदुर ने निश्चित रूप से यह सब पहले ही देख लिया था। युद्ध में हमारा और क्षत्रियों का महान विनाश होगा।"

एवं विचिन्तयानस्तु प्रविविक्षुर्ह्रदं नृपः दुःखसंतप्तहृदयो दृष्ट्वा राजन्बलक्षयम्

Thinking in this way, the king entered the lake. O king! Having seen the destruction of his army, his heart was consumed with grief.

इस प्रकार सोचते हुए राजा झील में प्रवेश कर गये। हे राजा! अपनी सेना का विनाश देखकर उसका हृदय दुःख से भर गया।

पाण्डवाश्च महाराज धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमाः अभ्यधावन्त संक्रुद्धास्तव राजन्बलं प्रति

O great king! With Dhṛṣṭadyumna at the forefront, the Pāṇḍava-s angrily attacked your soldiers.

हे महान राजा! धृष्टद्युम्न को सबसे आगे रखकर पांडवों ने क्रोधपूर्वक आपके सैनिकों पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

शक्त्यृष्टिप्रासहस्तानां बलानामभिगर्जताम् संकल्पमकरोन्मोघं गाण्डीवेन धनंजयः

O king! They wielded javelins, swords and spears in their hands and roared powerfully. With Gāṇḍīva, Dhanañjayā rendered their resolutions unsuccessful.

हे राजा! वे अपने हाथों में भाले, तलवारें और भाले लिये हुए थे और शक्तिशाली गर्जना कर रहे थे। गांडीव के साथ, धनंजय ने उनके संकल्पों को असफल कर दिया।

तान्हत्वा निशितैर्बाणैः सामात्यान्सह बन्धुभिः रथे श्वेतहये तिष्ठन्नर्जुनो बह्वशोभत

He slaughtered them with his sharp arrows, with their advisers and their relatives. Stationed on a chariot drawn by white horses, Arjuna was extremely radiant.

उसने अपने तीखे तीरों से उन्हें, उनके सलाहकारों और रिश्तेदारों को मार डाला। श्वेत घोड़ों से जुते हुए रथ पर सवार अर्जुन अत्यंत तेजस्वी थे।

सुबलस्य हते पुत्रे सवाजिरथकुञ्जरे महावनमिव छिन्नमभवत्तावकं बलम्

Subala and his son were killed, with their horses, chariots and elephants. Your army was like a large forest that had been destroyed.

सुबाला और उसके पुत्र को उनके घोड़ों, रथों और हाथियों सहित मार दिया गया। तुम्हारी सेना एक बड़े जंगल के समान थी जो नष्ट हो गया था।

अनेकशतसाहस्रे बले दुर्योधनस्य ह नान्यो महारथो राजञ्जीवमानो व्यदृश्यत

There had been hundreds and thousands in Duryodhana's army. O king! But not a single mahāratha was seen to remain alive.

दुर्योधन की सेना में सैकड़ों और हजारों लोग थे। हे राजा! परन्तु एक भी महारथ जीवित बचता हुआ नहीं देखा गया।

द्रोणपुत्रादृते वीरात्तथैव कृतवर्मणः कृपाच्च गौतमाद्राजन्पार्थिवाच्च तवात्मजात्

O king! The only exceptions were Droṇa's son, the brave Kritavarma, Gautama Kṛpa and the king, your son.

हे राजा! एकमात्र अपवाद द्रोण के पुत्र, बहादुर कृतवर्मा, गौतम कृपा और राजा, आपके पुत्र थे।

धृष्टद्युम्नस्तु मां दृष्ट्वा हसन्सात्यकिमब्रवीत् किमनेन गृहीतेन नानेनार्थोऽस्ति जीवता

On seeing me, Dhṛṣṭadyumna laughed. He spoke to Sātyaki. "What is the point of capturing this one? Nothing will be gained by keeping him alive."

मुझे देखकर धृष्टद्युम्न हँसा। उन्होंने सात्यकि से बात की. "इसको पकड़ने का क्या मतलब है? इसे जिंदा रखने से कुछ हासिल नहीं होगा।"

धृष्टद्युम्नवचः श्रुत्वा शिनेर्नप्ता महारथः उद्यम्य निशितं खड्गं हन्तुं मामुद्यतस्तदा

On hearing Dhṛṣṭadyumna's words, Śini's mahāratha grandson raised his sharp sword, so as to kill me then.

धृष्टद्युम्न के वचन सुनकर शिनि के महारथ पौत्र ने मुझे मारने के लिये अपनी तीक्ष्ण तलवार उठाई।

तमागम्य महाप्राज्ञः कृष्णद्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत् मुच्यतां संजयो जीवन्न हन्तव्यः कथंचन

At that time, the immensely wise Kṛṣṇā Dvaipāyana arrived and said, "Free Sañjaya alive. Under no circumstances should he be killed."

उसी समय परम बुद्धिमान कृष्ण द्वैपायन आये और बोले, "संजय को जीवित मुक्त करो। किसी भी परिस्थिति में उसे नहीं मारा जाना चाहिए।"

द्वैपायनवचः श्रुत्वा शिनेर्नप्ता कृताञ्जलिः ततो मामब्रवीन्मुक्त्वा स्वस्ति संजय साधय

Hearing Dvaipāyana's words, Śini's grandson joined his hands in salutation. Freeing me, he said, "O Sañjaya! Depart in peace."

द्वैपायन के वचन सुनकर शिनि के पौत्र ने हाथ जोड़कर प्रणाम किया। उन्होंने मुझे मुक्त करते हुए कहा, "हे संजय! शांति से चले जाओ।"

अनुज्ञातस्त्वहं तेन न्यस्तवर्मा निरायुधः प्रातिष्ठं येन नगरं सायाह्ने रुधिरोक्षितः

Obtaining his permission, I cast aside my armour. I was without weapons. In the evening, I set out for the city, my limbs covered in blood.

उनकी अनुमति पाकर मैंने अपना कवच अलग रख दिया। मैं बिना हथियार के था. शाम को, मैं शहर के लिए निकला, मेरे अंग खून से लथपथ थे।

क्रोशमात्रमपक्रान्तं गदापाणिमवस्थितम् एकं दुर्योधनं राजन्नपश्यं भृशविक्षतम्

O king! When I had travelled one krośa, I saw the solitary Duryodhana, with the club in his hand. He was severely wounded.

हे राजा! जब मैं एक क्रोश यात्रा कर चुका, तो मैंने अकेले दुर्योधन को देखा, जिसके हाथ में गदा थी। वह गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गया था.

स तु मामश्रुपूर्णाक्षो नाशक्नोदभिवीक्षितुम् उपप्रैक्षत मां दृष्ट्वा तदा दीनमवस्थितम्

His eyes were full of tears and he did not see me. Miserable, I stood before him. Though he saw me, he ignored me.

उसकी आँखें आँसुओं से भरी थीं और उसने मुझे नहीं देखा। दुखी होकर मैं उसके सामने खड़ा हो गया। हालाँकि उसने मुझे देखा, फिर भी उसने मुझे अनदेखा कर दिया।

तं चाहमपि शोचन्तं दृष्ट्वैकाकिनमाहवे मुहूर्तं नाशकं वक्तुं किंचिद्दुःखपरिप्लुतः

On seeing him alone thus, alone after the battle, I was overcome with great grief and could not speak for a while.

युद्ध के बाद उन्हें इस प्रकार अकेला देखकर मुझे बड़ा दुःख हुआ और मैं कुछ देर तक कुछ बोल न सका।

ततोऽस्मै तदहं सर्वमुक्तवान्ग्रहणं तदा द्वैपायनप्रसादाच्च जीवतो मोक्षमाहवे

Then I told him everything about my capture in the battle and my release, alive, through the favours of Dvaipāyana.

तब मैंने उन्हें युद्ध में पकड़े जाने और द्वैपायन की कृपा से जीवित छूटने के बारे में सब कुछ बताया।

मुहूर्तमिव च ध्यात्वा प्रतिलभ्य च चेतनाम् भ्रातॄंश्च सर्वसैन्यानि पर्यपृच्छत मां ततः

Having thought for some time, he regained his senses. He asked me about his brothers and all the soldiers.

कुछ देर सोचने के बाद उसे होश आ गया। उसने मुझसे अपने भाइयों और सभी सैनिकों के बारे में पूछा।

तस्मै तदहमाचक्षं सर्वं प्रत्यक्षदर्शिवान् भ्रातॄंश्च निहतान्सर्वान्सैन्यं च विनिपातितम्

I told him everything that I had directly witnessed, that all his brothers had been killed and the soldiers brought down.

मैंने उसे वह सब कुछ बताया जो मैंने प्रत्यक्ष देखा था, कि उसके सभी भाई मारे गए थे और सैनिकों को मार गिराया गया था।

त्रयः किल रथाः शिष्टास्तावकानां नराधिप इति प्रस्थानकाले मां कृष्णद्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत्

"O lord of men! Only three rāṭha-s remain among those on your side. This is what Kṛṣṇā Dvaipāyana told me when I was about to leave."

"हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आपके पक्ष में केवल तीन रथ बचे हैं। जब मैं जाने वाला था तो कृष्ण द्वैपायन ने मुझसे यही कहा था।"

स दीर्घमिव निःश्वस्य विप्रेक्ष्य च पुनः पुनः अंसे मां पाणिना स्पृष्ट्वा पुत्रस्ते पर्यभाषत

He sighed and glanced repeatedly at me. Then, touching me with his hands, your son replied,

उसने आह भरी और बार-बार मेरी ओर देखा। तब आपके पुत्र ने मुझे अपने हाथों से छूकर उत्तर दिया,

त्वदन्यो नेह संग्रामे कश्चिज्जीवति संजय द्वितीयं नेह पश्यामि ससहायाश्च पाण्डवाः

"O Sañjaya! With your exception, no one else has been left alive in this battle. I do not see a second one, though the Pāṇḍava-s have their aides.

"हे संजय! आपके अलावा, इस युद्ध में कोई भी जीवित नहीं बचा है। मुझे दूसरा नहीं दिख रहा है, हालांकि पांडवों के पास उनके सहयोगी हैं।

ब्रूयाः संजय राजानं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम् दुर्योधनस्तव सुतः प्रविष्टो ह्रदमित्युत

O Sañjaya! Tell the lord, the king, who has wisdom for his sight. Tell him, your son, Duryodhana, has entered the lake.

हे संजय! प्रभु, उस राजा से कहो, जिसके पास दृष्टि के लिये बुद्धि है। उससे कहो, तुम्हारा पुत्र दुर्योधन सरोवर में घुस गया है।

सुहृद्भिस्तादृशैर्हीनः पुत्रैर्भ्रातृभिरेव च पाण्डवैश्च हृते राज्ये को नु जीवति मादृशः

He is without well-wishers, without direction and without sons and brothers. When the Pāṇḍava-s have obtained the kingdom, what is the point of someone like me remaining alive?

वह शुभचिंतकों से रहित, दिशाहीन तथा पुत्र-बन्धुओं से रहित है। जब पांडवों ने राज्य प्राप्त कर लिया, तो मेरे जैसे व्यक्ति के जीवित रहने का क्या मतलब है?

आचक्षेथाः सर्वमिदं मां च मुक्तं महाहवात् अस्मिंस्तोयह्रदे सुप्तं जीवन्तं भृशविक्षतम्

Tell him everything and tell him that I have escaped from the great battle. I am alive, but am severely wounded. I will rest in this lake."

उससे सब कुछ कहो और कहो कि मैं उस महान युद्ध से भाग निकला हूँ। मैं जीवित हूं, लेकिन गंभीर रूप से घायल हूं. मैं इसी झील में विश्राम करूँगा।”

एवमुक्त्वा महाराज प्राविशत्तं ह्रदं नृपः अस्तम्भयत तोयं च मायया मनुजाधिपः

O great king! Having said this, the king entered the lake. Through his māyā, that lord of men created a passage in the water.

हे महान राजा! इतना कहकर राजा झील में प्रवेश कर गये। मनुष्यों के स्वामी ने अपनी माया से जल में एक मार्ग बनाया।

तस्मिन्ह्रदं प्रविष्टे तु त्रीन्रथाञ्श्रान्तवाहनान् अपश्यं सहितानेकस्तं देशं समुपेयुषः

When he had entered that lake, I was alone and saw that the three rāṭha-s arrived at the spot, with their exhausted mounts.

जब वह उस झील में प्रवेश कर गया, तो मैं अकेला था और मैंने देखा कि तीन रथ-अपनी थकी हुई सवारियों के साथ वहां पहुंचे।

कृपं शारद्वतं वीरं द्रौणिं च रथिनां वरम् भोजं च कृतवर्माणं सहिताञ्शरविक्षतान्

They were Śāradvata Kṛpa, Droṇa's son, supreme among rāṭha-s, and Kritavarma, from the Bhojā lineage. They were wounded with arrows.

वे द्रोण के पुत्र, रथ-वंश में सर्वश्रेष्ठ, शरद्वात कृप और भोज वंश से कृतवर्मा थे। वे बाणों से घायल हो गये।

ते सर्वे मामभिप्रेक्ष्य तूर्णमश्वानचोदयन् उपयाय च मामूचुर्दिष्ट्या जीवसि संजय

All of them glanced towards me and swiftly urged their horses. Having approached me, they said, "O Sañjaya! It is through good fortune that you are alive."

उन सभी ने मेरी ओर देखा और तेजी से अपने घोड़ों को आगे बढ़ाया। मेरे पास आकर उन्होंने कहा, "हे संजय! सौभाग्य से आप जीवित हैं।"

अपृच्छंश्चैव मां सर्वे पुत्रं तव जनाधिपम् कच्चिद्दुर्योधनो राजा स नो जीवति संजय

All of them asked me about your son, the lord of men. "O Sañjaya! Where is King Duryodhana? Is he alive?"

उन सभी ने मुझ से आपके पुत्र, मनुष्यों के स्वामी, के विषय में पूछा। "हे संजय! राजा दुर्योधन कहाँ है? क्या वह जीवित है?"

आख्यातवानहं तेभ्यस्तदा कुशलिनं नृपम् तच्चैव सर्वमाचक्षं यन्मां दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत् ह्रदं चैवाहमाचष्ट यं प्रविष्टो नराधिपः

I told them that the king was well. I told them everything that Duryodhana had told me. I also showed them the lake that the king had entered.

मैंने उनसे कहा कि राजा ठीक हैं। मैंने उन्हें वह सब कुछ बता दिया जो दुर्योधन ने मुझसे कहा था। मैंने उन्हें वह झील भी दिखाई जिसमें राजा ने प्रवेश किया था।

अश्वत्थामा तु तद्राजन्निशम्य वचनं मम तं ह्रदं विपुलं प्रेक्ष्य करुणं पर्यदेवयत्

O king! Having heard my words, Aśvatthāma glanced towards the large lake. He lamented in grief and said,

हे राजा! मेरी बातें सुनकर अश्वत्थामा ने बड़े तालाब की ओर देखा। उसने दुःख से विलाप करते हुए कहा,

अहो धिङ्न स जानाति जीवतोऽस्मान्नराधिपः पर्याप्ता हि वयं तेन सह योधयितुं परान्

"Āla-s! The king does not know that we are still alive. With him, we are sufficient to fight with the enemy."

"आला! राजा को नहीं पता कि हम अभी भी जीवित हैं। उसके साथ, हम दुश्मन से लड़ने के लिए पर्याप्त हैं।"

ते तु तत्र चिरं कालं विलप्य च महारथाः प्राद्रवन्रथिनां श्रेष्ठा दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुसुतान्रणे

For a long time, those mahāratha-s lamented there. Then, on seeing the sons of Pāṇḍu in the battle, those best of rāṭha-s fled.

उन महारथियों ने बहुत देर तक वहाँ विलाप किया। तदनन्तर युद्ध में पाण्डुपुत्रों को देखकर वे रथश्रेष्ठ भाग गये।

ते तु मां रथमारोप्य कृपस्य सुपरिष्कृतम् सेनानिवेशमाजग्मुर्हतशेषास्त्रयो रथाः

Kṛpa took me up on his well-prepared chariot. Those three rāṭha-s, all that was left of our army, departed for the camp.

कृपा मुझे अपने सुसज्जित रथ पर ले गये। वे तीन रथ, जो हमारी सेना में बचे थे, शिविर के लिए प्रस्थान कर गए।

तत्र गुल्माः परित्रस्ताः सूर्ये चास्तमिते सति सर्वे विचुक्रुशुः श्रुत्वा पुत्राणां तव संक्षयम्

The sun had set. On hearing that all your sons had been killed, those who guarded the outposts lamented.

सूरज डूब गया। यह सुनकर कि आपके सभी पुत्र मारे गये, चौकियों के रक्षकों ने विलाप किया।

ततो वृद्धा महाराज योषितां रक्षणो नराः राजदारानुपादाय प्रययुर्नगरं प्रति

O great king! They were aged men who had been employed to take care of the women. With the wives of the king, they set out for the city.

हे महान राजा! वे वृद्ध पुरुष थे जिन्हें महिलाओं की देखभाल के लिए नियुक्त किया गया था। वे राजा की पत्नियों के साथ नगर की ओर निकल पड़े।

तत्र विक्रोशतीनां च रुदतीनां च सर्वशः प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दः श्रुत्वा तद्बलसंक्षयम्

All of them lamented and wept loudly. On hearing about the destruction of your army, great sounds of woe arose.

वे सब विलाप करने लगे और जोर-जोर से रोने लगे। आपकी सेना के विनाश का समाचार सुनकर बड़े-बड़े शोक की ध्वनियाँ उठने लगीं।

ततस्ता योषितो राजन्क्रन्दन्त्यो वै मुहुर्मुहुः कुरर्य इव शब्देन नादयन्त्यो महीतलम्

O king! The women wept repeatedly. They made the earth resound with that noise, like female ospreys.

हे राजा! महिलाएं बार-बार रोती रहीं। उन्होंने मादा ओस्प्रे के समान शोर से पृथ्वी को गूँज दिया।

आजघ्नुः करजैश्चापि पाणिभिश्च शिरांस्युत लुलुवुश्च तदा केशान्क्रोशन्त्यस्तत्र तत्र ह

They scratched their bodies with their nails. They struck their heads with their hands. They tore out their hair. The wept loudly.

उन्होंने अपने शरीर को नाखूनों से खरोंचा। उन्होंने अपने हाथों से अपने सिर पर प्रहार किया। उन्होंने अपने बाल नोच लिये। जोर-जोर से रोने लगे।

हाहाकारविनादिन्यो विनिघ्नन्त्य उरांसि च क्रोशन्त्यस्तत्र रुरुदुः क्रन्दमाना विशां पते

They beat on their breasts with loud sounds of lamentation. O lord of the earth! With those sounds of lamentation, they wept loudly.

वे विलाप की ऊँची ध्वनि के साथ अपनी छाती पीटते हैं। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! विलाप की उन ध्वनियों के साथ वे जोर-जोर से रोने लगे।

ततो दुर्योधनामात्याः साश्रुकण्ठा भृशातुराः राजदारानुपादाय प्रययुर्नगरं प्रति

Duryodhana's advisers were extremely miserable and their voices choked with tears. Taking the king's wives with them, they left for the city.

दुर्योधन के सलाहकार अत्यंत दुखी थे और उनकी आवाजें आँसुओं से भरी हुई थीं। राजा की पत्नियों को साथ लेकर वे नगर की ओर चल दिये।

वेत्रजर्झरहस्ताश्च द्वाराध्यक्षा विशां पते शयनीयानि शुभ्राणि स्पर्ध्यास्तरणवन्ति च समादाय ययुस्तूर्णं नगरं दाररक्षिणः

O lord of the earth! They took with them beautiful beds that were spread with expensive covers. With staffs in their hands, those who were in charge of the gates and those who guarded the gates also swiftly fled towards the city.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! वे अपने साथ खूबसूरत बिस्तर ले गए जिन पर महंगे कवर बिछे हुए थे। जो फाटकों के अधिकारी और द्वारपाल थे, वे भी हाथों में लाठी लेकर तेजी से नगर की ओर भाग गए।

आस्थायाश्वतरीयुक्तान्स्यन्दनानपरे जनाः स्वान्स्वान्दारानुपादाय प्रययुर्नगरं प्रति

Other men placed their wives on carts that were drawn by mules and left towards the city.

अन्य पुरुषों ने अपनी पत्नियों को खच्चरों द्वारा खींची जाने वाली गाड़ियों पर बिठाया और शहर की ओर चले गए।

अदृष्टपूर्वा या नार्यो भास्करेणापि वेश्मसु ददृशुस्ता महाराज जना यान्तीः पुरं प्रति

O great king! Those noble women had earlier lived in palaces and were not seen, even by the sun. As they departed for the city, they were seen by ordinary men.

हे महान राजा! वे कुलीन महिलाएँ पहले महलों में रहती थीं और उन्हें सूरज भी नहीं देखता था। जैसे ही वे शहर के लिए रवाना हुए, उन्हें आम लोगों ने देखा।

ताः स्त्रियो भरतश्रेष्ठ सौकुमार्यसमन्विताः प्रययुर्नगरं तूर्णं हतस्वजनबान्धवाः

O foremost among the Bhārata lineage! Those women were delicate and noble. With their kin and relatives slain, they swiftly departed for the city.

हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! वे महिलाएँ नाजुक और नेक थीं। अपने रिश्तेदारों और संबंधियों को मार डालने के बाद, वे तेजी से शहर की ओर प्रस्थान कर गए।

आ गोपालाविपालेभ्यो द्रवन्तो नगरं प्रति ययुर्मनुष्याः संभ्रान्ता भीमसेनभयार्दिताः

The cowherds and other herdsmen also fled towards the city. The men were terrified, afflicted by their fear of Bhīmasena.

ग्वाले और अन्य चरवाहे भी शहर की ओर भाग गए। वे लोग भीमसेन के भय से भयभीत और पीड़ित थे।

अपि चैषां भयं तीव्रं पार्थेभ्योऽभूत्सुदारुणम् प्रेक्षमाणास्तदान्योन्यमाधावन्नगरं प्रति

They were overcome by an extremely terrible fear of the Pārtha-s too. As they fled towards the city, they glanced at each other.

वे पार्थ-वंश के अत्यंत भयानक भय से भी ग्रस्त थे। जैसे ही वे शहर की ओर भागे, उन्होंने एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा।

तस्मिंस्तदा वर्तमाने विद्रवे भृशदारुणे युयुत्सुः शोकसंमूढः प्राप्तकालमचिन्तयत्

There was an extremely terrible exodus that took place. At that time, Yuyutsu was senseless because of his grief. Nevertheless, he thought about what should be done at the time.

अत्यंत भयानक पलायन हुआ था। उस समय युयुत्सु दुःख के कारण बेसुध हो गया था। फिर भी उन्होंने सोचा कि उस समय क्या करना चाहिए।

जितो दुर्योधनः संख्ये पाण्डवैर्भीमविक्रमैः एकादशचमूभर्ता भ्रातरश्चास्य सूदिताः हताश्च कुरवः सर्वे भीष्मद्रोणपुरःसराः

"Duryodhana has been defeated in the battle by the terrible valour of the Pāṇḍava-s. He was the lord of eleven army divisions. His brothers have been slain. All the Kuru-s, with Bhīṣma and Droṇa as the foremost, have been killed.

"पांडवों की भयानक वीरता से युद्ध में दुर्योधन हार गया है। वह ग्यारह सेना प्रभागों का स्वामी था। उसके भाई मारे गए हैं। भीष्म और द्रोण सहित सभी कुरु मारे गए हैं।

अहमेको विमुक्तस्तु भाग्ययोगाद्यदृच्छया विद्रुतानि च सर्वाणि शिबिराणि समन्ततः

Through the wishes of destiny, I am the only one who has been spared. In every direction, all of them are running away from the camps.

नियति की इच्छा से, मैं ही एकमात्र ऐसा व्यक्ति हूँ जो बच गया है। चारों तरफ कैंप छोड़ कर भाग रहे हैं.

दुर्योधनस्य सचिवा ये केचिदवशेषिताः राजदारानुपादाय व्यधावन्नगरं प्रति

There are only a few who are left from among Duryodhana's advisers. Taking the king's wives with them, they have run away towards the city.

दुर्योधन के सलाहकारों में से कुछ ही लोग बचे हैं। वे राजा की पत्नियों को साथ लेकर नगर की ओर भाग गये हैं।

प्राप्तकालमहं मन्ये प्रवेशं तैः सहाभिभो युधिष्ठिरमनुज्ञाप्य भीमसेनं तथैव च

O lord! I think that the time has come for me to also enter with them, after having taken Yudhiṣṭhira and Bhīmā's permission."

हे भगवान! मुझे लगता है कि अब समय आ गया है कि मैं भी युधिष्ठिर और भीम की अनुमति लेकर उनके साथ प्रवेश करूँ।”

एतमर्थं महाबाहुरुभयोः स न्यवेदयत् तस्य प्रीतोऽभवद्राजा नित्यं करुणवेदिता परिष्वज्य महाबाहुर्वैश्यापुत्रं व्यसर्जयत्

For this purpose, the mightyarmed one presented himself before them. The king, who was always compassionate, was pleased. The mightyarmed one embraced the son of a vaiśya and granted him leave.

इस प्रयोजन के लिये वह महाबाहुधारी उनके सामने उपस्थित हुआ। राजा, जो सदैव दयालु था, प्रसन्न हुआ। महाबाहु ने एक वैश्य के पुत्र को गले लगाया और उसे विदा कर दिया।

ततः स रथमास्थाय द्रुतमश्वानचोदयत् असंभावितवांश्चापि राजदारान्पुरं प्रति

Ascending his chariot, he swiftly urged the horses and also tended to the task of conveying the wives of the king to the city.

अपने रथ पर चढ़कर, उसने तेजी से घोड़ों को हाँका और राजा की पत्नियों को शहर तक पहुँचाने का काम भी किया।

तैश्चैव सहितः क्षिप्रमस्तं गच्छति भास्करे प्रविष्टो हास्तिनपुरं बाष्पकण्ठोऽश्रुलोचनः

With them, he entered Hāstinapura, his voice choking with tears and his eyes full of tears. The sun was swiftly setting.

उनके साथ, उन्होंने हस्तिनापुर में प्रवेश किया, उनकी आवाज आंसुओं से भरी हुई थी और उनकी आंखें आंसुओं से भरी हुई थीं। सूरज तेजी से डूब रहा था।

अपश्यत महाप्राज्ञं विदुरं साश्रुलोचनम् राज्ञः समीपान्निष्क्रान्तं शोकोपहतचेतसम्

He saw the immensely wise Vidūra, who also had tears in his eyes. His senses overcome with grief, he had come away from the king.

उन्होंने अत्यंत बुद्धिमान विदुर को देखा, जिनकी आँखों में भी आँसू थे। उसकी इन्द्रियाँ शोक से विह्वल हो गयीं, वह राजा से दूर आ गया था।

तमब्रवीत्सत्यधृतिः प्रणतं त्वग्रतः स्थितम् अस्मिन्कुरुक्षये वृत्ते दिष्ट्या त्वं पुत्र जीवसि

He bowed down before him and stood before him. The one who upheld the truth spoke to him. "O son! It is through good fortune that you are alive amidst this destruction of the Kuru-s.

वह उसके सामने झुककर उसके सामने खड़ा हो गया। जिसने सत्य का समर्थन किया, उसने उससे बात की। "हे पुत्र! यह सौभाग्य है कि तुम कुरु-वंश के इस विनाश के बीच जीवित हो।

विना राज्ञः प्रवेशाद्वै किमसि त्वमिहागतः एतन्मे कारणं सर्वं विस्तरेण निवेदय

Why have you entered and come here without the king? Tell me, in detail, the reason for this."

तुम राजा के बिना यहाँ क्यों आये हो? इसका कारण विस्तार से बताओ।”

युयुत्सुरुवाच निहते शकुनौ तात सज्ञातिसुतबान्धवे हतशेषपरीवारो राजा दुर्योधनस्ततः स्वकं स हयमुत्सृज्य प्राङ्मुखः प्राद्रवद्भयात्

Yuyutsu replied, "O father! Śākuni has been slain, with his kin and his relatives. When his relatives had been killed, King Duryodhana abandoned his horse. He retreated and fled in an eastern direction.

युयुत्सु ने उत्तर दिया, "हे पिता! शकुनि अपने रिश्तेदारों सहित मारा गया है। जब उसके रिश्तेदार मारे गए, तो राजा दुर्योधन ने अपना घोड़ा छोड़ दिया। वह पीछे हट गया और पूर्वी दिशा में भाग गया।

अपक्रान्ते तु नृपतौ स्कन्धावारनिवेशनात् भयव्याकुलितं सर्वं प्राद्रवन्नगरं प्रति

When the king had run away, all those in the camps and abodes were terrified and anxious and fled towards the city.

जब राजा भाग गया, तो छावनियों और आवासों में रहने वाले सभी लोग भयभीत और चिंतित हो गए और नगर की ओर भाग गए।

ततो राज्ञः कलत्राणि भ्रातॄणां चास्य सर्वशः वाहनेषु समारोप्य स्त्र्यध्यक्षाः प्राद्रवन्भयात्

The guards in charge also fled, having placed the wives of the king and his brothers on the mounts.

प्रभारी रक्षक भी राजा और उसके भाइयों की पत्नियों को पहाड़ों पर बिठाकर भाग गए।

ततोऽहं समनुज्ञाप्य राजानं सहकेशवम् प्रविष्टो हास्तिनपुरं रक्षँल्लोकाद्धि वाच्यताम्

At this, I took the permission of the king and Keśava and entered Hāstinapura, wishing to protect the people who were running away."

इस पर, मैंने राजा और केशव की अनुमति ली और भाग रहे लोगों की रक्षा करने की इच्छा से हस्तिनापुर में प्रवेश किया।"

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं वैश्यापुत्रेण भाषितम् प्राप्तकालमिति ज्ञात्वा विदुरः सर्वधर्मवित् अपूजयदमेयात्मा युयुत्सुं वाक्यकोविदम्

Having heard the words spoken by the son of a vaiśya, Vidūra, knowledgeable about all forms of dharma, thought that the right decision had been taken at the time. The one who was eloquent with words, immeasurable in his soul, applauded Yuyutsu.

एक वैश्य के पुत्र द्वारा कहे गए शब्दों को सुनकर, सभी प्रकार के धर्म के जानकार विदुर ने सोचा कि उस समय सही निर्णय लिया गया था। जो शब्दों में निपुण था, आत्मा में अथाह था, उसने युयुत्सु की सराहना की।

प्राप्तकालमिदं सर्वं भवतो भरतक्षये अद्य त्वमिह विश्रान्तः श्वोऽभिगन्ता युधिष्ठिरम्

"When all those of the Bhārata lineage were being destroyed, you acted in accordance with what should have been done at the time. You should rest now. Tomorrow, you can return to Yudhiṣṭhira."

"जब भरत वंश के सभी लोग नष्ट हो रहे थे, तो आपने उस समय जो किया जाना चाहिए था उसके अनुसार कार्य किया। आपको अब आराम करना चाहिए। कल, आप युधिष्ठिर के पास लौट सकते हैं।"

एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं विदुरः सर्वधर्मवित् युयुत्सुं समनुज्ञाप्य प्रविवेश नृपक्षयम् युयुत्सुरपि तां रात्रिं स्वगृहे न्यवसत्तदा

Having heard the words of Vidūra, knowledgeable about all forms of dharma, Yuyutsu took his permission and entered, after the destruction of the king had taken place. Yuyutsu spent the night in his own house.

सभी प्रकार के धर्मों के ज्ञाता विदुर के वचन सुनकर युयुत्सु ने उनकी अनुमति ली और राजा का विनाश हो जाने के बाद प्रवेश किया। युयुत्सु ने अपने घर में ही रात बितायी.
