संजय उवाच पुत्रस्तु ते महाराज रथस्थो रथिनां वरः दुरुत्सहो बभौ युद्धे यथा रुद्रः प्रतापवान्

Sañjaya said: O great king! Your son, supreme among rāṭha-s, was stationed on his chariot in the battle. He was resplendent and difficult to resist, like the powerful Rudra

संजय ने कहा: हे महान राजा! रथियों में श्रेष्ठ आपका पुत्र युद्ध में अपने रथ पर तैनात था। वह शक्तिशाली रुद्र की तरह तेजस्वी था और उसका विरोध करना कठिन था

तस्य बाणसहस्रैस्तु प्रच्छन्ना ह्यभवन्मही परांश्च सिषिचे बाणैर्धाराभिरिव पर्वतान्

The earth was covered with thousands of his arrows. He showered the enemy with arrows, like rain pouring down on a mountain.

उसके हजारों बाणों से पृथ्वी ढक गयी। उसने शत्रु पर बाणों की वर्षा की, जैसे पर्वत पर वर्षा हो रही हो।

न च सोऽस्ति पुमान्कश्चित्पाण्डवानां महाहवे हयो गजो रथो वापि योऽस्य बाणैरविक्षतः

In the great battle, there wasn't a man among the Pāṇḍava-s, or a horse, elephant or a rāṭha, who was not wounded by his arrows.

उस महान युद्ध में, पांडवों में से कोई भी व्यक्ति, घोड़ा, हाथी या रथ ऐसा नहीं था, जो उनके बाणों से घायल न हुआ हो।

यं यं हि समरे योधं प्रपश्यामि विशां पते स स बाणैश्चितोऽभूद्वै पुत्रेण तव भारत

O lord of the earth! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Whichever warrior I saw in the encounter was struck by your son with his arrows.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मैंने मुठभेड़ में जिस भी योद्धा को देखा, उसे आपके पुत्र ने अपने बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

यथा सैन्येन रजसा समुद्धूतेन वाहिनी प्रत्यदृश्यत संछन्ना तथा बाणैर्महात्मनः

The soldiers in the army were covered by dust and were seen to be mangled by the great-souled one's arrows.

सेना के सैनिक धूल से ढके हुए थे और उस महाबली के बाणों से घायल होते दिख रहे थे।

बाणभूतामपश्याम पृथिवीं पृथिवीपते दुर्योधनेन प्रकृतां क्षिप्रहस्तेन धन्विना

O lord of the earth! The earth seemed to be made out of arrows that were released by the archer Duryodhana, swift in the use of his hands.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! धनुर्धर दुर्योधन ने जो तीव्र गति से हाथ चलाये थे, उनके छोड़े हुए बाणों से पृथ्वी बनी हुई प्रतीत होती थी।

तेषु योधसहस्रेषु तावकेषु परेषु च एको दुर्योधनो ह्यासीत्पुमानिति मतिर्मम

Among the thousands of warriors on your side, or that of the enemy, it seemed to me that Duryodhana was the only man.

आपके या शत्रु पक्ष के हजारों योद्धाओं में से मुझे ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ कि दुर्योधन ही एकमात्र व्यक्ति था।

तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम तव पुत्रस्य विक्रमम् यदेकं सहिताः पार्था नात्यवर्तन्त भारत

We beheld your son's wonderful valour. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! He was single-handed. But the united Pārtha-s could not advance against him.

हमने आपके पुत्र की अद्भुत वीरता देखी। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वह अकेला था। लेकिन एकजुट पार्थ-एस उसके खिलाफ आगे नहीं बढ़ सके।

युधिष्ठिरं शतेनाजौ विव्याध भरतर्षभ भीमसेनं च सप्तत्या सहदेवं च सप्तभिः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! He pierced Yudhiṣṭhira with one hundred arrows, Bhīmasena with seventy, Sahadeva with seven,

हे भरत वंश में बैल! उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर को एक सौ बाणों से, भीमसेन को सत्तर बाणों से, सहदेव को सात बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

नकुलं च चतुःषष्ट्या धृष्टद्युम्नं च पञ्चभिः सप्तभिर्द्रौपदेयांश्च त्रिभिर्विव्याध सात्यकिम् धनुश्चिच्छेद भल्लेन सहदेवस्य मारिष

Nākula with sixty-four, Dhṛṣṭadyumna with five, Draupadī's sons with seven each and pierced Sātyaki with three. O venerable one! He severed Sahadeva's bow with a broad-headed arrow.

नकुल ने चौंसठ पुत्रों से, धृष्टद्युम्न ने पाँच पुत्रों से, द्रौपदी के पुत्रों ने सात-सात पुत्रों से तथा सात्यकि को तीन पुत्रों से घायल कर दिया। हे आदरणीय! उसने चौड़े मुख वाले बाण से सहदेव का धनुष तोड़ दिया।

तदपास्य धनुश्छिन्नं माद्रीपुत्रः प्रतापवान् अभ्यधावत राजानं प्रगृह्यान्यन्महद्धनुः ततो दुर्योधनं संख्ये विव्याध दशभिः शरैः

Casting aside the severed bow, Mādrī's powerful son picked up another great bow and attacked the king. In the battle, he pierced Duryodhana with ten arrows.

माद्री के शक्तिशाली पुत्र ने कटे हुए धनुष को एक ओर फेंककर दूसरा महान धनुष उठा लिया और राजा पर आक्रमण कर दिया। युद्ध में उन्होंने दुर्योधन को दस बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

नकुलश्च ततो वीरो राजानं नवभिः शरैः घोररूपैर्महेष्वासो विव्याध च ननाद च

The brave and great archer, Nākula, pierced the king with nine arrows and roared, assuming a terrible form.

वीर और महान धनुर्धर नकुल ने नौ बाणों से राजा को घायल कर दिया और भयानक रूप धारण कर गर्जना की।

सात्यकिश्चापि राजानं शरेणानतपर्वणा द्रौपदेयास्त्रिसप्तत्या धर्मराजश्च सप्तभिः अशीत्या भीमसेनश्च शरै राजानमार्दयत्

Sātyaki struck the king with an arrow with drooping tufts. Draupadī's sons struck him with seventy-three and Dharmarāja with seven. Bhīmasena struck the king with eighty arrows.

सात्यकि ने झुके हुए शिखा वाले बाण से राजा पर प्रहार किया। द्रौपदी के पुत्रों ने उस पर तिहत्तर और धर्मराज ने सात से प्रहार किया। भीमसेन ने राजा को अस्सी बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

समन्तात्कीर्यमाणस्तु बाणसंघैर्महात्मभिः न चचाल महाराज सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः

He was afflicted from every direction by storms of arrows shot by those great-souled ones. O great king! However, while all the soldiers looked on, he did not waver.

उन महात्माओं के चलाये हुए बाणों के तूफ़ान से वह हर दिशा से पीड़ित हो रहा था। हे महान राजा! हालाँकि, जब सभी सैनिक देखते रहे, तो भी वह नहीं डगमगाया।

लाघवं सौष्ठवं चापि वीर्यं चैव महात्मनः अति सर्वाणि भूतानि ददृशुः सर्वमानवाः

All the beings and all the men witnessed the dexterity, skill and prowess of the great-souled one.

सभी प्राणियों और सभी मनुष्यों ने उस महान आत्मा की निपुणता, कौशल और कौशल को देखा।

धार्तराष्ट्रास्तु राजेन्द्र यात्वा तु स्वल्पमन्तरम् अपश्यमाना राजानं पर्यवर्तन्त दंशिताः

O Indra among kings! Some sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra had only fled a short distance away. On seeing the king, those armoured ones surrounded him.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! धृतराष्ट्र के कुछ पुत्र कुछ ही दूरी पर भाग गये थे। राजा को देखते ही उन बख्तरबंद सिपाहियों ने उसे घेर लिया।

तेषामापततां घोरस्तुमुलः समजायत क्षुब्धस्य हि समुद्रस्य प्रावृट्काले यथा निशि

When they attacked, they created a tumultuous sound. It was like a turbulent ocean on a monsoon night.

जब उन्होंने हमला किया तो उन्होंने कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनि उत्पन्न कर दी। यह मानसून की रात में अशांत सागर जैसा था।

समासाद्य रणे ते तु राजानमपराजितम् प्रत्युद्ययुर्महेष्वासाः पाण्डवानाततायिनः

In the battle, those great archers approached the unvanquished king and counter-attacked the Pāṇḍava assassins.

युद्ध में वे महान धनुर्धर अजेय राजा के पास आये और पांडव हत्यारों पर जवाबी हमला किया।

भीमसेनं रणे क्रुद्धं द्रोणपुत्रो न्यवारयत् ततो बाणैर्महाराज प्रमुक्तैः सर्वतोदिशम् नाज्ञायन्त रणे वीरा न दिशः प्रदिशस्तथा

In the encounter, Droṇa's son repulsed the enraged Bhīmasena. O great king! Arrows were released in all the directions. The brave ones could not be distinguished in the battle, nor the directions or the sub-directions.

मुठभेड़ में द्रोण के पुत्र ने क्रुद्ध भीमसेन को खदेड़ दिया। हे महान राजा! सभी दिशाओं में तीर छोड़े गये। युद्ध में न तो शूरवीरों की पहचान हो सकी, न दिशा, न उपदिशा।

तावुभौ क्रूरकर्माणावुभौ भारत दुःसहौ घोररूपमयुध्येतां कृतप्रतिकृतैषिणौ त्रासयन्तौ जगत्सर्वं ज्याक्षेपविहतत्वचौ

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Both of those resplendent ones were the performers of cruel deeds and were extremely difficult to resist. They assumed fearful forms and fought, acting and neutralizing each other. The entire universe was terrified because of the twangs of their bows and their words.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वे दोनों तेजस्वी क्रूर कर्म करने वाले थे और उनका विरोध करना अत्यंत कठिन था। उन्होंने भयावह रूप धारण किया और एक-दूसरे को मार गिराते हुए लड़ते रहे। उनके धनुष की टंकार तथा शब्दों से समस्त ब्रह्माण्ड भयभीत हो उठा।

शकुनिस्तु रणे वीरो युधिष्ठिरमपीडयत् तस्याश्वांश्चतुरो हत्वा सुबलस्य सुतो विभुः नादं चकार बलवान्सर्वसैन्यानि कम्पयन्

In the battle, the brave Śākuni attacked Yudhiṣṭhira. Subala's powerful son slew the four horses that belonged to the lord and roared. This made all the soldiers tremble.

युद्ध में वीर शकुनि ने युधिष्ठिर पर आक्रमण कर दिया। सुबाला के शक्तिशाली पुत्र ने उन चार घोड़ों को मार डाला जो भगवान के थे और गर्जना कर रहे थे। इससे सभी सैनिक कांपने लगे।

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे वीरं राजानमपराजितम् अपोवाह रथेनाजौ सहदेवः प्रतापवान्

At that time, the powerful Sahadeva bore the brave and unvanquished king away from the field of battle on his chariot.

उस समय, शक्तिशाली सहदेव ने अपने रथ पर बहादुर और अजेय राजा को युद्ध के मैदान से दूर ले जाया।

अथान्यं रथमास्थाय धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः शकुनिं नवभिर्विद्ध्वा पुनर्विव्याध पञ्चभिः ननाद च महानादं प्रवरः सर्वधन्विनाम्

Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira ascended another chariot. He pierced Śākuni with nine arrows and pierced him again with five. The best among all archers then roared loudly.

धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर दूसरे रथ पर चढ़े। उन्होंने शकुनि को नौ बाणों से घायल किया और पुनः पांच बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया। तब सभी धनुर्धारियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ ने जोर से गर्जना की।

तद्युद्धमभवच्चित्रं घोररूपं च मारिष ईक्षितृप्रीतिजननं सिद्धचारणसेवितम्

O venerable one! The battle was wonderful and fearful in form. It generated delight among the spectators and was applauded by the siddha-s and the cāraṇa-s.

हे आदरणीय! युद्ध का स्वरूप अद्भुत एवं भयानक था। इससे दर्शकों में खुशी पैदा हुई और सिद्धों और चारणों ने इसकी सराहना की।

उलूकस्तु महेष्वासं नकुलं युद्धदुर्मदम् अभ्यद्रवदमेयात्मा शरवर्षैः समन्ततः

Ulūka, immeasurable in his soul, attacked the great archer, Nākula, invincible in battle, and showered him with arrows from every direction.

अथाह आत्मा वाले उलूक ने युद्ध में अजेय महान धनुर्धर नकुल पर आक्रमण किया और उन पर हर दिशा से बाणों की वर्षा की।

तथैव नकुलः शूरः सौबलस्य सुतं रणे शरवर्षेण महता समन्तात्पर्यवारयत्

In that way, the brave Nākula repulsed Saubala's son in the encounter and repulsed him with a great shower of arrows.

इस प्रकार वीर नकुल ने सौबल के पुत्र को युद्ध में मार गिराया और बाणों की भारी वर्षा करके उसे खदेड़ दिया।

तौ तत्र समरे वीरौ कुलपुत्रौ महारथौ योधयन्तावपश्येतां परस्परकृतागसौ

They were brave mahāratha-s, born in noble lineages. They were seen to fight with each other, enraged with each other.

वे महान वंश में पैदा हुए बहादुर मराठा थे। वे एक-दूसरे से लड़ते, एक-दूसरे पर क्रोधित होते देखे गए।

तथैव कृतवर्मा तु शैनेयं शत्रुतापनम् योधयञ्शुशुभे राजन्बलं शक्र इवाहवे

O king! In that way, Kritavarma fought against Śini's descendant, the tormentor of enemies, and was resplendent, like Śākra in an encounter against Bāla.

हे राजा! इस तरह, कृतवर्मा ने शत्रुओं को सताने वाले शिनि के वंशज के खिलाफ लड़ाई लड़ी और बाला के खिलाफ मुठभेड़ में शक्र की तरह तेजस्वी थे।

दुर्योधनो धनुश्छित्त्वा धृष्टद्युम्नस्य संयुगे अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं विव्याध निशितैः शरैः

In the battle, Duryodhana severed Dhṛṣṭadyumna's bow. When his bow had been severed, he pierced him with sharp arrows.

युद्ध में दुर्योधन ने धृष्टद्युम्न का धनुष तोड़ दिया। जब उसका धनुष टूट गया तो उसने तीखे बाणों से उसे घायल कर दिया।

धृष्टद्युम्नोऽपि समरे प्रगृह्य परमायुधम् राजानं योधयामास पश्यतां सर्वधन्विनाम्

While all the archers looked on, in that encounter, Dhṛṣṭadyumna grasped a supreme weapon and fought against the king.

जब सभी धनुर्धर देख रहे थे, उस मुठभेड़ में, धृष्टद्युम्न ने एक सर्वोच्च हथियार पकड़ लिया और राजा के खिलाफ युद्ध किया।

तयोर्युद्धं महच्चासीत्संग्रामे भरतर्षभ प्रभिन्नयोर्यथा सक्तं मत्तयोर्वरहस्तिनोः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! The clash between those two was exceedingly great. They were like two supreme and crazy elephants, with shattered temples, exuding musth.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! उन दोनों के बीच की टक्कर बेहद जबरदस्त थी. वे दो सर्वोच्च और पागल हाथियों की तरह थे, जिनके टूटे हुए मंदिर और कामुकता निकल रही थी।

गौतमस्तु रणे क्रुद्धो द्रौपदेयान्महाबलान् विव्याध बहुभिः शूरः शरैः संनतपर्वभिः

In the battle, the brave Gautama became angry and pierced Draupadī's immensely strong sons with many arrows with drooping tufts.

युद्ध में वीर गौतम ने क्रोधित होकर द्रौपदी के अत्यंत बलशाली पुत्रों को झुके हुए गुच्छों वाले अनेक बाणों से घायल कर दिया।

तस्य तैरभवद्युद्धमिन्द्रियैरिव देहिनः घोररूपमसंवार्यं निर्मर्यादमतीव च

That clash between them and him was like that between a being and the senses. It assumed a fierce and terrible form and neither side was inclined to show mercy.

उनके और उनके बीच का वह टकराव वैसा ही था जैसा किसी प्राणी और इंद्रियों के बीच होता है। इसने उग्र और भयानक रूप धारण कर लिया और कोई भी पक्ष दया दिखाने को तैयार नहीं था।

ते च तं पीडयामासुरिन्द्रियाणीव बालिशम् स च तान्प्रतिसंरब्धः प्रत्ययोधयदाहवे

They afflicted him, like senses oppressing a stupid person. He angrily fought against them in that battle.

उन्होंने उसे वैसे ही सताया, जैसे इन्द्रियाँ मूर्ख को सताती हैं। उस युद्ध में वह क्रोधित होकर उनके विरुद्ध युद्ध करने लगा।

एवं चित्रमभूद्युद्धं तस्य तैः सह भारत उत्थायोत्थाय हि यथा देहिनामिन्द्रियैर्विभो

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Thus the colourful battle between them and him raged on. O lord! It was like the one that always takes place between a being and the senses.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! इस प्रकार उनके और उनके बीच रंगारंग युद्ध चलता रहा। हे भगवान! यह वैसा ही था जैसा कि हमेशा एक प्राणी और इंद्रियों के बीच होता है।

नराश्चैव नरैः सार्धं दन्तिनो दन्तिभिस्तथा हया हयैः समासक्ता रथिनो रथिभिस्तथा संकुलं चाभवद्भूयो घोररूपं विशां पते

Men fought with men. Tuskers fought with tuskers. Horses clashed against horses and rāṭha-s against rāṭha-s. O lord of the earth! The battle became tumultuous and fearful in form.

आदमी आदमी से लड़े. टस्कर्स ने टस्कर्स से लड़ाई की। घोड़े घोड़ों से और रथ-स रथ-स से भिड़ गये। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! युद्ध का स्वरूप उग्र एवं भयावह हो गया।

इदं चित्रमिदं घोरमिदं रौद्रमिति प्रभो युद्धान्यासन्महाराज घोराणि च बहूनि च

O lord! It was wonderful in one spot and terrible and fierce in another. O great king! There were many terrible clashes.

हे भगवान! यह एक स्थान पर अद्भुत था और दूसरे स्थान पर भयानक और भयंकर था। हे महान राजा! कई भयानक झड़पें हुईं.

ते समासाद्य समरे परस्परमरिंदमाः विव्यधुश्चैव जघ्नुश्च समासाद्य महाहवे

Those scorchers of enemies clashed against each other in the encounter. They pierced, struck and killed each other in the great encounter.

मुठभेड़ में शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले वे लोग एक-दूसरे से भिड़ गये। उन्होंने भीषण मुठभेड़ में एक-दूसरे को छेदा, मारा और मार डाला।

तेषां शस्त्रसमुद्भूतं रजस्तीव्रमदृश्यत प्रवातेनोद्धतं राजन्धावद्भिश्चाश्वसादिभिः

Because of the weapons, a terrible dust was seen to rise. O king! As they ran away, it was also created by the horses and the horse riders and was fanned by the wind.

अस्त्र-शस्त्रों के कारण भयंकर धूल उड़ती हुई दिखाई दी। हे राजा! जैसे ही वे भागे, यह भी घोड़ों और घुड़सवारों द्वारा बनाया गया था और हवा से फैल गया था।

रथनेमिसमुद्भूतं निःश्वासैश्चापि दन्तिनाम् रजः संध्याभ्रकपिलं दिवाकरपथं ययौ

The dust was created by the chariots and the breaths of the tuskers. It was like a tawny cloud in the evening and obstructed the path of the sun.

धूल रथों और हाथियों की सांसों से पैदा हुई थी। यह शाम के समय भूरे बादल की तरह था और सूर्य का मार्ग अवरुद्ध कर रहा था।

रजसा तेन संपृक्ते भास्करे निष्प्रभीकृते संछादिताभवद्भूमिस्ते च शूरा महारथाः

The sun was covered by the dust and lost its brilliance. The earth and the brave mahāratha-s were shrouded.

सूर्य धूल से ढक गया और अपनी चमक खो बैठा। पृथ्वी और वीर मराठा डूब गये।

मुहूर्तादिव संवृत्तं नीरजस्कं समन्ततः वीरशोणितसिक्तायां भूमौ भरतसत्तम उपाशाम्यत्ततस्तीव्रं तद्रजो घोरदर्शनम्

O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! But in a short while, the earth was sprinkled with the blood of the brave ones and, in every direction, became free of the dust. That terrible dust, fierce in form, was pacified.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! परन्तु थोड़ी ही देर में पृथ्वी वीरों के रक्त से लथपथ हो गयी और सभी दिशाओं में धूल से मुक्त हो गयी। भयंकर रूप वाली वह भयानक धूल शांत हो गई।

ततोऽपश्यं महाराज द्वंद्वयुद्धानि भारत यथाप्राग्र्यं यथाज्येष्ठं मध्याह्ने वै सुदारुणे वर्मणां तत्र राजेन्द्र व्यदृश्यन्तोज्ज्वलाः प्रभाः

O great king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Those extremely fearful duels could again be seen, as the best and the eldest fought against each other at midday. O Indra among kings! The armour was seen to blaze in resplendent brilliance.

हे महान राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन अत्यंत भयावह द्वंद्वों को फिर से देखा जा सकता था, जैसे कि दोपहर के समय सबसे अच्छे और सबसे बड़े एक-दूसरे के खिलाफ लड़ते थे। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! कवच देदीप्यमान दीप्ति से चमकता हुआ दिखाई दे रहा था।

शब्दः सुतुमुलः संख्ये शराणां पततामभूत् महावेणुवनस्येव दह्यमानस्य सर्वतः

As arrows descended in that battle, a tumultuous sound was raised. It was as if a large forest of bamboos was being burnt in every direction.

उस संग्राम में जैसे ही बाण उतरे, कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनि उत्पन्न हुई। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों हर दिशा में बांसों का एक बड़ा जंगल जल रहा हो।
