संजय उवाच शल्ये तु निहते राजन्मद्रराजपदानुगाः रथाः सप्तशता वीरा निर्ययुर्महतो बलात्

Sañjaya said: O king! When Śalya was killed, seven hundred brave rāṭha-s, followers of the king of Madra, advanced in a large army.

संजय ने कहा: हे राजा! जब शल्य मारे गए, तो मद्र के राजा के अनुयायी सात सौ बहादुर रथ एक बड़ी सेना में आगे बढ़े।

दुर्योधनस्तु द्विरदमारुह्याचलसंनिभम् छत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन वीज्यमानश्च चामरैः न गन्तव्यं न गन्तव्यमिति मद्रानवारयत्

Duryodhana was astride an elephant that was like a mountain. An umbrella was held aloft his head and he was fanned with whisks. He restrained the ones from Madra, "Do not go. Do not advance."

दुर्योधन एक हाथी पर सवार था जो पर्वत के समान था। उसके सिर पर छाता रखा हुआ था और उसे हवा से हवा दी जा रही थी। उन्होंने मद्र वालों को रोका, "मत जाओ। आगे मत बढ़ो।"

दुर्योधनेन ते वीरा वार्यमाणाः पुनः पुनः युधिष्ठिरं जिघांसन्तः पाण्डूनां प्राविशन्बलम्

Duryodhana repeatedly tried to restrain those brave ones. However, wishing to kill Yudhiṣṭhira, they penetrated the Pāṇḍu army.

दुर्योधन ने बार-बार उन वीरों को रोकने का प्रयास किया। हालाँकि, युधिष्ठिर को मारने की इच्छा से, वे पांडु सेना में घुस गए।

ते तु शूरा महाराज कृतचित्ताः स्म योधने धनुःशब्दं महत्कृत्वा सहायुध्यन्त पाण्डवैः

O great king! Those brave warriors had made up their minds to fight. They loudly twanged their bows and fought with the Pāṇḍava-s.

हे महान राजा! उन वीर योद्धाओं ने युद्ध करने का मन बना लिया था। उन्होंने जोर-जोर से अपने धनुषों को बजाया और पांडवों से युद्ध किया।

श्रुत्वा तु निहतं शल्यं धर्मपुत्रं च पीडितम् मद्रराजप्रिये युक्तैर्मद्रकाणां महारथैः

On hearing that Śalya had been killed, they afflicted Dharma's son. Those mahāratha-s from Madra were devoted to ensuring the welfare of the king of Madra.

यह सुनकर कि शल्य मारा गया, उन्होंने धर्म के पुत्र को पीड़ित किया। मद्र के वे महारथी मद्र के राजा के कल्याण को सुनिश्चित करने के लिए समर्पित थे।

आजगाम ततः पार्थो गाण्डीवं विक्षिपन्धनुः पूरयन्रथघोषेण दिशः सर्वा महारथः

Pārtha advanced there, stretching the bow Gāṇḍīva. The mahāratha again filled the directions with the clatter of his chariot.

पार्थ गाण्डीव धनुष तानकर वहाँ आगे बढ़े। महारथी ने फिर से अपने रथ की घरघराहट से दिशाएँ गुंजायमान कर दीं।

ततोऽर्जुनश्च भीमश्च माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ सात्यकिश्च नरव्याघ्रो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः

Arjuna, Bhīmā, the Pāṇḍava-s who were Mādrī's sons, Sātyaki, tiger among men, all of Draupadī's sons,

अर्जुन, भीम, पांडव-जो माद्री के पुत्र थे, सात्यकि, मनुष्यों में बाघ, द्रौपदी के सभी पुत्र,

धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च पाञ्चालाः सह सोमकैः युधिष्ठिरं परीप्सन्तः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन्

Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, the Pāñcāla-s and the Somaka-s desired to protect Yudhiṣṭhira and surrounded him from every direction.

धृष्टद्युम्न, शिखंडी, पंचाल और सोमक युधिष्ठिर की रक्षा करना चाहते थे और उन्हें हर दिशा से घेर लेते थे।

ते समन्तात्परिवृताः पाण्डवैः पुरुषर्षभाः क्षोभयन्ति स्म तां सेनां मकराः सागरं यथा

Surrounding him, the bulls among the Pāṇḍava-s agitated that army, like makara-s in an ocean.

पाण्डवों के बैलों ने उसे घेरकर उस सेना को वैसे ही व्याकुल कर दिया, जैसे समुद्र में मकर।

पुरोवातेन गङ्गेव क्षोभ्यमाना महानदी अक्षोभ्यत तदा राजन्पाण्डूनां ध्वजिनी पुनः

It was as if the great river Gāṅga was agitated by a mighty wind. O king! But those mahāratha-s were ready to give up their lives and again agitated the great army of the Pāṇḍu-s and their standards.

यह ऐसा था मानो महान नदी गंगा तेज़ हवा से उत्तेजित हो गई हो। हे राजा! लेकिन वे महारथी अपने प्राण त्यागने के लिए तैयार थे और उन्होंने पांडु की विशाल सेना और उनके सैनिकों को फिर से उत्तेजित कर दिया।

प्रस्कन्द्य सेनां महतीं त्यक्तात्मानो महारथाः वृक्षानिव महावाताः कम्पयन्ति स्म तावकाः

Those on your side made it tremble, like trees by a giant storm. They loudly exclaimed,

तुम्हारे पक्ष के लोगों ने इसे ऐसे कंपा दिया, जैसे प्रचंड तूफ़ान से पेड़। वे जोर से चिल्लाये,

बहवश्चुक्रुशुस्तत्र क्व स राजा युधिष्ठिरः भ्रातरो वास्य ते शूरा दृश्यन्ते नेह केचन

"Where is King Yudhiṣṭhira? Why are his brave brothers not seen?

"राजा युधिष्ठिर कहाँ हैं? उनके वीर भाई क्यों नहीं दिख रहे?"

पाञ्चालानां महावीर्याः शिखण्डी च महारथः धृष्टद्युम्नोऽथ शैनेयो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः

Where are the immensely valorous Pāñcāla-s, mahāratha Śikhaṇḍī, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śini's descendant and all the sons of Draupadī?"

अत्यंत पराक्रमी पांचाल, महारथी शिखंडी, धृष्टद्युम्न, शिनि के वंशज और द्रौपदी के सभी पुत्र कहाँ हैं?"

एवं तान्वादिनः शूरान्द्रौपदेया महारथाः अभ्यघ्नन्युयुधानश्च मद्रराजपदानुगान्

While they were roaring in this way, Draupadī's brave and mahāratha sons and Yuyudhāna attacked the followers of the king of Madra.

जब वे इस प्रकार गर्जना कर रहे थे, द्रौपदी के वीर और महारथी पुत्रों और युयुधान ने मद्रराज के अनुयायियों पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

चक्रैर्विमथितैः केचित्केचिच्छिन्नैर्महाध्वजैः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त समरे तावका निहताः परैः

Some of them were crushed by the wheels. Others were mangled and the giant standards destroyed. In the battle, those on your side were seen to be slain by the enemy.

उनमें से कुछ को पहियों ने कुचल दिया। अन्य को क्षत-विक्षत कर दिया गया और विशाल मानक नष्ट कर दिए गए। युद्ध में आपके पक्ष के लोग शत्रु द्वारा मारे गये देखे गये।

आलोक्य पाण्डवान्युद्धे योधा राजन्समन्ततः वार्यमाणा ययुर्वेगात्तव पुत्रेण भारत

O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Though they were restrained by your son, on seeing the Pāṇḍava-s in the battle, those warriors powerfully rushed against them from every side.

हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यद्यपि आपके पुत्र द्वारा उन्हें रोका गया था, फिर भी युद्ध में पांडवों को देखकर वे योद्धा हर तरफ से उन पर शक्तिशाली ढंग से टूट पड़े।

दुर्योधनस्तु तान्वीरान्वारयामास सान्त्वयन् न चास्य शासनं कश्चित्तत्र चक्रे महारथः

Duryodhana tried to restrain and calm those brave ones. But not a single one of those mahāratha-s would listen to him.

दुर्योधन ने उन वीरों को रोकने और शान्त करने का प्रयत्न किया। लेकिन उन महारथियों में से एक ने भी उसकी बात नहीं सुनी।

ततो गान्धारराजस्य पुत्रः शकुनिरब्रवीत् दुर्योधनं महाराज वचनं वचनक्षमः

O great king! Śākuni, the son of the king of Gāndhāra, capable of speaking eloquently, spoke these words to Duryodhana.

हे महान राजा! गांधार के राजा के पुत्र शकुनि, जो वाक्पटुता से बोलने में सक्षम थे, ने दुर्योधन से ये शब्द कहे।

किं नः संप्रेक्षमाणानां मद्राणां हन्यते बलम् न युक्तमेतत्समरे त्वयि तिष्ठति भारत

The army of the Madra-s is being slaughtered. Why are we looking on? O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! While you are stationed in the battle, this is not proper.

मद्रों की सेना का संहार हो रहा है। हम क्यों देख रहे हैं? हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जबकि आप युद्ध में तैनात हैं, यह उचित नहीं है.

सहितैर्नाम योद्धव्यमित्येष समयः कृतः अथ कस्मात्परानेव घ्नतो मर्षयसे नृप

At that time, we took a decision that we would fight together. O king! The enemy is slaughtering us. Why are you tolerating this?"

उस वक्त हमने फैसला लिया कि हम साथ मिलकर लड़ेंगे. हे राजा! दुश्मन हमारा कत्लेआम कर रहा है. आप ये क्यों बर्दाश्त कर रहे हैं?”

दुर्योधन उवाच वार्यमाणा मया पूर्वं नैते चक्रुर्वचो मम एते हि निहताः सर्वे प्रस्कन्नाः पाण्डुवाहिनीम्

Duryodhana replied, "I tried to restrain them earlier. But they did not listen to my words. Having penetrated the Pāṇḍu army, this is the reason they are being killed."

दुर्योधन ने उत्तर दिया, "मैंने पहले उन्हें रोकने की कोशिश की थी। लेकिन उन्होंने मेरी बात नहीं मानी। पांडु सेना में घुसकर इसी कारण वे मारे जा रहे हैं।"

शकुनिरुवाच न भर्तुः शासनं वीरा रणे कुर्वन्त्यमर्षिताः अलं क्रोद्धुं तथैतेषां नायं काल उपेक्षितुम्

Śākuni said, "When they are enraged in a battle, valiant ones do not listen to their master. You should not be angry with them. This is not the time to ignore this.

शकुनि ने कहा, "जब वे युद्ध में क्रोधित होते हैं, तो वीर लोग अपने स्वामी की बात नहीं सुनते। तुम्हें उन पर क्रोध नहीं करना चाहिए। यह समय इसे नजरअंदाज करने का नहीं है।"

यामः सर्वेऽत्र संभूय सवाजिरथकुञ्जराः परित्रातुं महेष्वासान्मद्रराजपदानुगान्

All of us should advance with our horses, chariots and elephants and rescue the great archers who are the followers of the king of Madra.

हम सभी को अपने घोड़ों, रथों और हाथियों के साथ आगे बढ़ना चाहिए और मद्र के राजा के अनुयायी महान धनुर्धरों को बचाना चाहिए।

अन्योन्यं परिरक्षामो यत्नेन महता नृप एवं सर्वेऽनुसंचिन्त्य प्रययुर्यत्र सैनिकाः

O king! We will take great care and protect each other. Let all of us think along those lines and ask the soldiers to advance."

हे राजा! हम एक-दूसरे का बहुत ख्याल रखेंगे और रक्षा करेंगे।' आइए हम सभी इस दिशा में सोचें और सैनिकों को आगे बढ़ने के लिए कहें।"

संजय उवाच एवमुक्तस्ततो राजा बलेन महता वृतः प्रययौ सिंहनादेन कम्पयन्वै वसुंधराम्

Sañjaya said: Having been thus addressed, the king surrounded himself with a large army. He roared like a lion, made the earth tremble and advanced.

संजय ने कहा: इस प्रकार संबोधित होने के बाद, राजा ने खुद को एक बड़ी सेना के साथ घेर लिया। वह सिंह के समान दहाड़ा, पृथ्वी को कंपाया और आगे बढ़ा।

हत विध्यत गृह्णीत प्रहरध्वं निकृन्तत इत्यासीत्तुमुलः शब्दस्तव सैन्यस्य भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Among your soldiers, there were tumultuous sounds like, "Slay. Pierce. Seize. Strike. Sever."

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपके सैनिकों के बीच, "मारो। छेद करो। पकड़ो। मारो। तोड़ दो" जैसी कोलाहल भरी आवाजें आ रही थीं।

पाण्डवास्तु रणे दृष्ट्वा मद्रराजपदानुगान् सहितानभ्यवर्तन्त गुल्ममास्थाय मध्यमम्

In the battle, the Pāṇḍava-s beheld the followers of the king of Madra. They advanced, uniting in a moderate formation.

युद्ध में पांडवों ने मद्र के राजा के अनुयायियों को देखा। वे एक मध्यम संरचना में एकजुट होकर आगे बढ़े।

ते मुहूर्ताद्रणे वीरा हस्ताहस्तं विशां पते निहताः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त मद्रराजपदानुगाः

O lord of the earth! In a short instant, those brave ones engaged in hand-to-hand combat in the battle and the followers of the king of Madra were seen to be killed.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! कुछ ही क्षण में वे वीर युद्ध में आमने-सामने हो गये और मद्रराज के अनुयायी मारे गये।

ततो नः संप्रयातानां हतामित्रास्तरस्विनः हृष्टाः किलकिलाशब्दमकुर्वन्सहिताः परे

While we were advancing, we saw that the enemy had spiritedly killed their foes and were cheerfully uttering roars of delight.

जब हम आगे बढ़ रहे थे तो हमने देखा कि शत्रु ने उत्साहपूर्वक अपने शत्रुओं को मार डाला है और प्रसन्नतापूर्वक प्रसन्नतापूर्वक दहाड़ रहे हैं।

अथोत्थितानि रुण्डानि समदृश्यन्त सर्वशः पपात महती चोल्का मध्येनादित्यमण्डलम्

In every direction, headless torsos were seen to rise up and fall down, like giant meteors from the solar disc at midday.

हर दिशा में बिना सिर वाले धड़ ऊपर उठते और नीचे गिरते देखे गए, जैसे दोपहर के समय सौर डिस्क से निकले विशाल उल्कापिंड।

रथैर्भग्नैर्युगाक्षैश्च निहतैश्च महारथैः अश्वैर्निपतितैश्चैव संछन्नाभूद्वसुंधरा

The chariots and yokes were shattered. The mahāratha-s were slain. Horses fell down. The earth was strewn with these.

रथ और घोड़े टूट गये। मराठा मारे गये। घोड़े गिर पड़े. पृथ्वी इनसे पटी हुई थी।

वातायमानैस्तुरगैर्युगासक्तैस्तुरंगमैः अदृश्यन्त महाराज योधास्तत्र रणाजिरे

O great king! Steeds that were as fleet as the wind were still yoked. In the battle, they were seen to drag the warriors around.

हे महान राजा! जो घोड़े हवा के समान बेड़े वाले थे, वे अब भी जुए में बंधे हुए थे। युद्ध में वे योद्धाओं को इधर-उधर घसीटते नजर आये।

भग्नचक्रान्रथान्केचिदवहंस्तुरगा रणे रथार्धं केचिदादाय दिशो दश विबभ्रमुः तत्र तत्र च दृश्यन्ते योक्त्रैः श्लिष्टाः स्म वाजिनः

In the encounter, some horses dragged around chariots with shattered wheels. Some others fled in the ten directions, dragging along halves of chariots. Here and there, yokes were seen to be attached to the horses.

मुठभेड़ में, कुछ घोड़े टूटे हुए पहियों वाले रथों के चारों ओर घसीटे गए। कुछ अन्य लोग रथों के आधे भाग को घसीटते हुए दसों दिशाओं में भाग गए। जगह-जगह घोड़ों पर जुए लगे हुए दिखाई देते थे।

रथिनः पतमानाश्च व्यदृश्यन्त नरोत्तम गगनात्प्रच्युताः सिद्धाः पुण्यानामिव संक्षये

O supreme among men! Rāṭha-s were seen to fall down. They were like siddha-s dislodged from the sky, after their store of good deeds had been exhausted.

हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! रथ-स को गिरते देखा गया। वे उन सिद्धों के समान थे जिन्हें उनके अच्छे कर्मों का भण्डार समाप्त हो जाने के बाद आकाश से उतार दिया गया था।

निहतेषु च शूरेषु मद्रराजानुगेषु च अस्मानापततश्चापि दृष्ट्वा पार्था महारथाः

The brave followers of the king of Madra were slaughtered. The mahāratha Pārtha-s saw that we were advancing towards them.

मद्रराज के वीर अनुयायियों का वध कर दिया गया। महारथ पार्थ-एस ने देखा कि हम उनकी ओर बढ़ रहे थे।

अभ्यवर्तन्त वेगेन जयगृध्राः प्रहारिणः बाणशब्दरवान्कृत्वा विमिश्राञ्शङ्खनिस्वनैः

Wielding weapons and desiring victory, they attacked powerfully. They created a whizzing sound with their arrows and this mixed with the blare of conch shells.

हथियार लेकर और विजय की इच्छा से उन्होंने शक्तिशाली आक्रमण किया। उन्होंने अपने बाणों से घर्र-घर्र की ध्वनि पैदा की और यह शंख की ध्वनि के साथ मिश्रित हो गई।

अस्मांस्तु पुनरासाद्य लब्धलक्षाः प्रहारिणः शरासनानि धुन्वानाः सिंहनादान्प्रचुक्रुशुः

Unwavering in their aim, those strikers again clashed against us. They brandished their bows and arrows and roared like lions.

अपने लक्ष्य पर अडिग वे स्ट्राइकर फिर हमसे भिड़ गये। वे अपने धनुष और बाण लहराते हुए सिंह की भाँति गरजने लगे।

ततो हतमभिप्रेक्ष्य मद्रराजबलं महत् मद्रराजं च समरे दृष्ट्वा शूरं निपातितम् दुर्योधनबलं सर्वं पुनरासीत्पराङ्मुखम्

On seeing that the large army of the king of Madra had been slain and that the brave king of Madra had been brought down in the battle, all of Duryodhana's soldiers again retreated.

यह देखकर कि मद्रराजा की विशाल सेना मारी गयी और मद्रराज वीर युद्ध में धराशायी हो गये, दुर्योधन के सभी सैनिक पुनः पीछे हट गये।

वध्यमानं महाराज पाण्डवैर्जितकाशिभिः दिशो भेजेऽथ संभ्रान्तं त्रासितं दृढधन्विभिः

O great king! They were slaughtered by the Pāṇḍava-s, firm archers, who desired victory. Frightened and terrified, they fled in different directions.

हे महान राजा! वे दृढ़ धनुर्धर पांडवों द्वारा मारे गए, जो जीत की इच्छा रखते थे। भयभीत और भयभीत होकर वे अलग-अलग दिशाओं में भाग गये।
