संजय उवाच वातिकानां सकाशात्तु श्रुत्वा दुर्योधनं हतम् हतशिष्टास्ततो राजन्कौरवाणां महारथाः

Sañjaya said: O king! The remaining Kaurava mahāratha-s heard from the bards that Duryodhana had been brought down.

संजय ने कहा: हे राजा! बचे हुए कौरव महारथियों ने भाटों से सुना कि दुर्योधन को मार गिराया गया है।

विनिर्भिन्नाः शितैर्बाणैर्गदातोमरशक्तिभिः अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः त्वरिता जवनैरश्वैरायोधनमुपागमन्

They were mangled with sharp arrows, clubs, spears and javelins. Aśvatthāma, Kṛpa and Sātvata Kritavarma ascended swift steeds and quickly arrived at the field of the encounter.

वे तीखे तीरों, लाठियों, भालों और भालों से घायल हो गए थे। अश्वत्थामा, कृप और सात्वत कृतवर्मा तेज घोड़ों पर चढ़े और तेजी से मुठभेड़ के मैदान में पहुंचे।

तत्रापश्यन्महात्मानं धार्तराष्ट्रं निपातितम् प्रभग्नं वायुवेगेन महाशालं यथा वने

There, they saw Dhṛtarāṣṭra's great-souled son, who had been brought down. He was like a giant śala tree in the forest, shattered by the force of a storm.

वहाँ उन्होंने धृतराष्ट्र के महाबली पुत्र को देखा, जिसे नीचे लाया गया था। वह जंगल में तूफ़ान की तीव्रता से टूटे हुए विशाल शाल वृक्ष के समान था।

भूमौ विवेष्टमानं तं रुधिरेण समुक्षितम् महागजमिवारण्ये व्याधेन विनिपातितम्

He was writhing on the ground, covered in blood, like a great elephant slain by a hunter in the forest.

वह खून से लथपथ होकर जमीन पर पड़ा हुआ छटपटा रहा था, मानो जंगल में किसी शिकारी द्वारा मारा गया कोई बड़ा हाथी हो।

विवर्तमानं बहुशो रुधिरौघपरिप्लुतम् यदृच्छया निपतितं चक्रमादित्यगोचरम्

He was writhing and was covered by copious quantities of blood. It was as if the solar disc had been brought down. It was as if a giant tempest had arisen and had dried up the ocean.

वह छटपटा रहा था और काफी मात्रा में खून से लथपथ था। यह ऐसा था मानो सौर डिस्क को नीचे लाया गया हो। यह ऐसा था मानो एक विशाल तूफ़ान उठ खड़ा हुआ हो और उसने समुद्र को सुखा दिया हो।

महावातसमुत्थेन संशुष्कमिव सागरम् पूर्णचन्द्रमिव व्योम्नि तुषारावृतमण्डलम्

It was as if a giant tempest had arisen and had dried up the ocean. It was as if the disc of the full moon in the sky had been covered by mist.

यह ऐसा था मानो एक विशाल तूफ़ान उठ खड़ा हुआ हो और उसने समुद्र को सुखा दिया हो। ऐसा लग रहा था मानों आकाश में पूर्णिमा के चंद्रमा का चक्र धुंध से ढक गया हो।

रेणुध्वस्तं दीर्घभुजं मातङ्गसमविक्रमम् वृतं भूतगणैर्घोरैः क्रव्यादैश्च समन्ततः यथा धनं लिप्समानैर्भृत्यैर्नृपतिसत्तमम्

He was mightyarmed and like an elephant in valour, but was covered in dust. He was surrounded by a large number of fierce demons and predatory beasts in every direction, as if they were servants greedy for riches, surrounding the best of kings.

वह शक्तिशाली भुजाओं वाला और वीरता में हाथी के समान था, लेकिन धूल से सना हुआ था। वह हर दिशा में बड़ी संख्या में भयंकर राक्षसों और हिंसक जानवरों से घिरा हुआ था, जैसे कि वे धन के लालची नौकर हों, जो सबसे अच्छे राजाओं को घेरे हुए हों।

भ्रुकुटीकृतवक्त्रान्तं क्रोधादुद्वृत्तचक्षुषम् सामर्षं तं नरव्याघ्रं व्याघ्रं निपतितं यथा

There was a frown on his face and his eyes were dilated in rage. That tiger among men was like a tiger that had been brought down.

उसके चेहरे पर झुंझलाहट थी और उसकी आँखें गुस्से से फैली हुई थीं। मनुष्यों के बीच का वह बाघ उस बाघ के समान था जिसे नीचे लाया गया था।

ते तु दृष्ट्वा महेष्वासा भूतले पतितं नृपम् मोहमभ्यागमन्सर्वे कृपप्रभृतयो रथाः

They saw the great archer, the king, lying down on the ground. Kṛpa and the other rāṭha-s were extremely stupefied.

उन्होंने महान धनुर्धर राजा को भूमि पर लेटे हुए देखा। कृप और अन्य रथ अत्यंत स्तब्ध थे।

अवतीर्य रथेभ्यस्तु प्राद्रवन्राजसंनिधौ दुर्योधनं च संप्रेक्ष्य सर्वे भूमावुपाविशन्

They descended from their chariots and rushed towards the king. They saw Duryodhana and sat down on the ground, around him.

वे अपने रथों से उतरे और राजा की ओर दौड़ पड़े। उन्होंने दुर्योधन को देखा और उसके चारों ओर जमीन पर बैठ गये।

ततो द्रौणिर्महाराज बाष्पपूर्णेक्षणः श्वसन् उवाच भरतश्रेष्ठं सर्वलोकेश्वरेश्वरम्

O great king! Droṇa's son's eyes were full of tears and he sighed. He spoke to the best of the Bhārata lineage, the lord of all the kings on earth.

हे महान राजा! द्रोणपुत्र की आँखों में आँसू भर आये और उन्होंने आह भरी। उन्होंने पृथ्वी पर सभी राजाओं के स्वामी, भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ से बात की।

न नूनं विद्यतेऽसह्यं मानुष्ये किंचिदेव हि यत्र त्वं पुरुषव्याघ्र शेषे पांसुषु रूषितः

"There is no doubt that there is nothing that is permanent in the world of men. O tiger among men! You are lying down thus, covered in dust.

"इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि मनुष्यों की दुनिया में कुछ भी स्थायी नहीं है। हे मनुष्यों के बीच शेर! तुम इस तरह धूल में लिपटे हुए लेटे हो।

भूत्वा हि नृपतिः पूर्वं समाज्ञाप्य च मेदिनीम् कथमेकोऽद्य राजेन्द्र तिष्ठसे निर्जने वने

O king! You had earlier commanded the earth. O Indra among kings! How is it that you are alone in this deserted forest now?

हे राजा! तू ने पहले पृय्वी पर अधिकार किया था। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! ऐसा कैसे हुआ कि अब आप इस निर्जन वन में अकेले हैं?

दुःशासनं न पश्यामि नापि कर्णं महारथम् नापि तान्सुहृदः सर्वान्किमिदं भरतर्षभ

I do not see Duḥśāsana, or mahāratha Karṇa. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! All your well-wishers aren't here either.

मैं दुःशासन, या महारथ कर्ण को नहीं देखता हूँ। हे भरत वंश में बैल! आपके सभी शुभचिंतक भी यहां नहीं हैं.

दुःखं नूनं कृतान्तस्य गतिं ज्ञातुं कथंचन लोकानां च भवान्यत्र शेते पांसुषु रूषितः

It is a great sorrow that the ways of Yāma can never be known. You possessed all the worlds. Yet you are lying down, covered in dust.

यह बड़ा दु:ख है कि यम के मार्ग कभी ज्ञात नहीं हो पाते। आपके पास सभी संसार हैं। फिर भी तुम धूल में सने हुए लेटे हो।

एष मूर्धावसिक्तानामग्रे गत्वा परंतपः सतृणं ग्रसते पांसुं पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम्

This scorcher of enemies was foremost among those whose heads had been consecrated. Behold the course of destiny. He is covered with gras-s and dust now.

शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाला यह व्यक्ति उन लोगों में सबसे प्रमुख था जिनके सिरों को पवित्र किया गया था। नियति की चाल देखो. वह अब घास और धूल से ढका हुआ है।

क्व ते तदमलं छत्रं व्यजनं क्व च पार्थिव सा च ते महती सेना क्व गता पार्थिवोत्तम

O king! Where is your sparkling umbrella and whisk now? O supreme among kings! Where has your large army gone?

हे राजा! अब आपकी चमचमाती छतरी और मूंछ कहाँ है? हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! आपकी विशाल सेना कहाँ चली गयी?

दुर्विज्ञेया गतिर्नूनं कार्याणां कारणान्तरे यद्वै लोकगुरुर्भूत्वा भवानेतां दशां गतः

It is indeed impossible to fathom the course and cause and effect, since you, who were the preceptor of all the worlds, have now been reduced to this state.

वास्तव में पाठ्यक्रम, कारण और प्रभाव को समझना असंभव है, क्योंकि आप, जो सभी दुनियाओं के गुरु थे, अब इस स्थिति में पहुंच गए हैं।

अध्रुवा सर्वमर्त्येषु ध्रुवं श्रीरुपलक्ष्यते भवतो व्यसनं दृष्ट्वा शक्रविस्पर्धिनो भृशम्

Everything on earth is temporary. It is seen that prosperity and beauty are impermanent. You used to rival Śākra and we now see you reduced to this terrible state."

पृथ्वी पर सब कुछ अस्थायी है. देखा गया है कि समृद्धि और सुंदरता अनित्य है। आप शक्र के प्रतिद्वंद्वी थे और अब हम आपको इस भयानक स्थिति में गिरते हुए देख रहे हैं।"

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दुःखितस्य विशेषतः उवाच राजन्पुत्रस्ते प्राप्तकालमिदं वचः

O king! On hearing his words, which were especially full of sorrow, you son spoke these words, appropriate to the occasion.

हे राजा! उनके शब्द सुनकर, जो विशेष रूप से दुःख से भरे हुए थे, आपके पुत्र ने अवसर के अनुरूप ये शब्द कहे।

विमृज्य नेत्रे पाणिभ्यां शोकजं बाष्पमुत्सृजन् कृपादीन्स तदा वीरान्सर्वानेव नराधिपः

He shed tears of sorrow and wiped them away from his eyes with his hands. The lord of men spoke to those brave ones, Kṛpa and the others.

उसने दु:ख के आँसू बहाये और उन्हें अपने हाथों से अपनी आँखों से पोंछ लिया। मनुष्यों के स्वामी ने उन शूरवीरों, कृप तथा अन्य लोगों से बात की।

ईदृशो मर्त्यधर्मोऽयं धात्रा निर्दिष्ट उच्यते विनाशः सर्वभूतानां कालपर्यायकारितः

"It has been said that the creator has ordained such a dharma for those who are mortal. In the course of time, death confronts all beings.

"ऐसा कहा गया है कि निर्माता ने उन लोगों के लिए ऐसा धर्म निर्धारित किया है जो नश्वर हैं। समय के साथ, मृत्यु सभी प्राणियों का सामना करती है।

सोऽयं मां समनुप्राप्तः प्रत्यक्षं भवतां हि यः पृथिवीं पालयित्वाहमेतां निष्ठामुपागतः

In the presence of all of you, it now confronts me. I have ruled over the earth and have now been reduced to this state.

आप सभी की उपस्थिति में, यह अब मेरे सामने है। मैंने पृथ्वी पर शासन किया है और अब इस अवस्था में पहुँच गया हूँ।

दिष्ट्या नाहं परावृत्तो युद्धे कस्यांचिदापदि दिष्ट्याहं निहतः पापैश्छलेनैव विशेषतः

It is through good fortune that I have not been defeated by the enemy in battle. It is through good fortune that I have been brought down, especially through wickedness and deception.

यह सौभाग्य ही है कि मैं युद्ध में शत्रु से पराजित नहीं हुआ हूं। यह सौभाग्य ही है कि मुझे नीचे लाया गया है, विशेषकर दुष्टता और धोखे के कारण।

उत्साहश्च कृतो नित्यं मया दिष्ट्या युयुत्सता दिष्ट्या चास्मि हतो युद्धे निहतज्ञातिबान्धवः

It is through good fortune that, while engaged in fighting, I have always exhibited enterprise. After my relatives and allies have been slain in the battle, it is through good fortune that I have been brought down.

यह सौभाग्य ही है कि युद्ध में संलग्न रहते हुए भी मैंने सदैव साहस का परिचय दिया है। मेरे रिश्तेदारों और सहयोगियों के युद्ध में मारे जाने के बाद, सौभाग्य से मुझे नीचे लाया गया है।

दिष्ट्या च वोऽहं पश्यामि मुक्तानस्माज्जनक्षयात् स्वस्तियुक्तांश्च कल्यांश्च तन्मे प्रियमनुत्तमम्

It is through good fortune that I see that you have escaped from this destruction of men, and are well and hale. This is great delight for me.

यह सौभाग्य ही है कि मैं देख रहा हूं कि आप मनुष्यों के इस विनाश से बच गये हैं और स्वस्थ एवं स्वस्थ हैं। ये मेरे लिए बहुत ख़ुशी की बात है.

मा भवन्तोऽनुतप्यन्तां सौहृदान्निधनेन मे यदि वेदाः प्रमाणं वो जिता लोका मयाक्षयाः

Because you are my well-wishers, do not torment yourself at my death. If the Veda-s are proof, I have obtained eternal worlds.

क्योंकि तुम मेरे शुभचिंतक हो, मेरी मृत्यु पर अपने आप को कष्ट न दो। यदि वेद प्रमाण हैं तो मुझे अनन्त लोक प्राप्त हो गये हैं।

मन्यमानः प्रभावं च कृष्णस्यामिततेजसः तेन न च्यावितश्चाहं क्षत्रधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात्

I know about the powers of the infinitely energetic Kṛṣṇā. He has ensured that I did not deviate from following the dharma of kṣatriya-s.

मैं असीम ऊर्जावान कृष्ण की शक्तियों के बारे में जानता हूँ। उन्होंने यह सुनिश्चित किया कि मैं क्षत्रिय-धर्म का पालन करने से विचलित न होऊं।

स मया समनुप्राप्तो नास्मि शोच्यः कथंचन कृतं भवद्भिः सदृशमनुरूपमिवात्मनः यतितं विजये नित्यं दैवं तु दुरतिक्रमम्

I have obtained him. Therefore, I have nothing to sorrow about. You have done what those like you should have done. You have always sought to ensure my victory. But destiny is impossible to cross."

मैंने उसे प्राप्त कर लिया है. इसलिए मुझे दुःख की कोई बात नहीं है. आपने वही किया जो आप जैसे लोगों को करना चाहिए था। आपने सदैव मेरी जीत सुनिश्चित करने का प्रयास किया है। लेकिन नियति को पार करना असंभव है।”

एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः तूष्णीं बभूव राजेन्द्र रुजासौ विह्वलो भृशम्

O Indra among kings! Having spoken these words, with tears in his eyes, the king became silent. He was severely agitated by agony.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! यह कहकर आंखों में आंसू भरकर राजा चुप हो गये। वह पीड़ा से बुरी तरह व्याकुल हो उठा।

तथा तु दृष्ट्वा राजानं बाष्पशोकसमन्वितम् द्रौणिः क्रोधेन जज्वाल यथा वह्निर्जगत्क्षये

Seeing the king thus grief-stricken, Droṇa's son blazed up in anger, like the fire at the time of the destruction of the universe.

राजा को इस प्रकार दुःखी देखकर द्रोणपुत्र ब्रह्माण्ड के विनाश के समय आग की भाँति क्रोध से प्रज्वलित हो उठे।

स तु क्रोधसमाविष्टः पाणौ पाणिं निपीड्य च बाष्पविह्वलया वाचा राजानमिदमब्रवीत्

Overcome by rage, he pressed one hand with the other hand.His voice choking with tears, he spoke these words to the king.

क्रोध के वशीभूत होकर उसने एक हाथ को दूसरे हाथ से दबा लिया। उसकी आवाज आंसुओं से भर गई और उसने राजा से ये शब्द कहे।

पिता मे निहतः क्षुद्रैः सुनृशंसेन कर्मणा न तथा तेन तप्यामि यथा राजंस्त्वयाद्य वै

"My father was slain by those inferior ones, through an extremely cruel deed. O king! But that did not torment me as muc as I am suffering now.

"मेरे पिता को उन अधम लोगों ने अत्यंत क्रूर कर्म के द्वारा मार डाला था। हे राजा! परंतु इससे मुझे उतना कष्ट नहीं हुआ जितना कि अब मुझे हो रहा है।"

शृणु चेदं वचो मह्यं सत्येन वदतः प्रभो इष्टापूर्तेन दानेन धर्मेण सुकृतेन च

O lord! Listen to these words. I am swearing this truthfully, on the sacrifices I have performed, the donations, the dharma and the good deeds.

हे भगवान! इन शब्दों को सुनो. मैं अपने किये हुए यज्ञों, दान, धर्म और पुण्यों की सच्ची शपथ खा रहा हूँ।

अद्याहं सर्वपाञ्चालान्वासुदेवस्य पश्यतः सर्वोपायैर्हि नेष्यामि प्रेतराजनिवेशनम् अनुज्ञां तु महाराज भवान्मे दातुमर्हति

While Vāsudeva looks on, I will use every means possible to convey all the Pāñcāla-s to the abode of the lord of the dead today. O great king! You should grant me the permission."

जब तक वासुदेव देखते रहेंगे, मैं आज सभी पंचालों को मृतकों के स्वामी के निवास तक पहुंचाने के लिए हर संभव साधन का उपयोग करूंगा। हे महान राजा! आपको मुझे अनुमति देनी चाहिए।"

इति श्रुत्वा तु वचनं द्रोणपुत्रस्य कौरवः मनसः प्रीतिजननं कृपं वचनमब्रवीत् आचार्य शीघ्रं कलशं जलपूर्णं समानय

Having heard the words of Droṇa's son, which brought pleasure to his mind, Kaurava spoke these words to Kṛpa. "O preceptor! Quickly bring a pot full of water."

द्रोणपुत्र के मन को प्रसन्न करने वाले वचन सुनकर कौरव ने कृपा से ये वचन कहे। "हे गुरुदेव! शीघ्र जल से भरा घड़ा ले आओ।"

स तद्वचनमाज्ञाय राज्ञो ब्राह्मणसत्तमः कलशं पूर्णमादाय राज्ञोऽन्तिकमुपागमत्

On hearing the king's words, the supreme among brāhmana-s followed his instructions. He brought a pot full of water and approached the king.

राजा की बात सुनकर ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ ने उनके निर्देशों का पालन किया। वह पानी से भरा घड़ा लेकर आया और राजा के पास पहुंचा।

तमब्रवीन्महाराज पुत्रस्तव विशां पते ममाज्ञया द्विजश्रेष्ठ द्रोणपुत्रोऽभिषिच्यताम् सेनापत्येन भद्रं ते मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम्

O great king! O lord of the earth! Your son spoke these words. "O foremost among brāhmana-s! On my instructions, let Droṇa's fortunate son be consecrated as the commander, if you wish to do that which brings me pleasure.

हे महान राजा! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आपके पुत्र ने ये शब्द कहे। "हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! यदि आप वह करना चाहते हैं जिससे मुझे प्रसन्नता हो तो मेरे आदेश पर द्रोण के भाग्यशाली पुत्र को सेनापति के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित किया जाए।

राज्ञो नियोगाद्योद्धव्यं ब्राह्मणेन विशेषतः वर्तता क्षत्रधर्मेण ह्येवं धर्मविदो विदुः

On the instructions of a king, even a brāhmaṇa can fight, especially one who follows the dharma of kṣatriya-s. That is what those who are learned about dharma say."

राजा के आदेश पर, एक ब्राह्मण भी लड़ सकता है, विशेषकर वह जो क्षत्रिय धर्म का पालन करता है। धर्म के बारे में जानने वाले लोग यही कहते हैं।"

राज्ञस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा कृपः शारद्वतस्ततः द्रौणिं राज्ञो नियोगेन सेनापत्येऽभ्यषेचयत्

On hearing the king's words and following the king's instructions, Kṛpa Śāradvata consecrated Droṇa's son as the commander.

राजा के शब्दों को सुनने और राजा के निर्देशों का पालन करने पर, कृपा शरद्वात ने द्रोण के पुत्र को सेनापति के रूप में नियुक्त किया।

सोऽभिषिक्तो महाराज परिष्वज्य नृपोत्तमम् प्रययौ सिंहनादेन दिशः सर्वा विनादयन्

O great king! Having been thus consecrated, he embraced the best of kings. Roaring like a lion and making the directions resound, he departed.

हे महान राजा! इस प्रकार पवित्र होने के बाद, उन्होंने सर्वश्रेष्ठ राजाओं को गले लगाया। सिंह के समान दहाड़ते और दिशाओं को गुंजायमान करते हुए वह चले गये।

दुर्योधनोऽपि राजेन्द्र शोणितौघपरिप्लुतः तां निशां प्रतिपेदेऽथ सर्वभूतभयावहाम्

O Indra among kings! Duryodhana was covered with blood. He passed the night, which was dreadful to all beings.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! दुर्योधन खून से लथपथ हो गया। उन्होंने वह रात बिताई, जो सभी प्राणियों के लिए भयानक थी।

अपक्रम्य तु ते तूर्णं तस्मादायोधनान्नृप शोकसंविग्नमनसश्चिन्ताध्यानपराभवन्

O king! Those warriors quickly left. Their minds were overcome with grief and they were immersed in their thoughts.

हे राजा! वे योद्धा शीघ्र ही चले गये। उनके मन शोक से भर गये और वे अपने विचारों में डूब गये।
