वैशंपायन उवाच एवं तदभवद्युद्धं तुमुलं जनमेजय यत्र दुःखान्वितो राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीदिदम्

Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya! Thus did that terrible encounter take place. In misery, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke these words.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे जनमेजय! इस प्रकार वह भयानक मुठभेड़ हुई। दुःख में राजा धृतराष्ट्र ने ये शब्द कहे थे।

रामं संनिहितं दृष्ट्वा गदायुद्ध उपस्थिते मम पुत्रः कथं भीमं प्रत्ययुध्यत संजय

"Rāma reached the spot where the duel with the clubs was to take place. O Sañjaya! On seeing this, how did my son fight back against Bhīmā?"

"राम उस स्थान पर पहुँचे जहाँ गदाओं के साथ द्वंद्व होना था। हे संजय! यह देखकर, मेरे पुत्र ने भीम के विरुद्ध कैसे प्रतिकार किया?"

संजय उवाच रामसांनिध्यमासाद्य पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव युद्धकामो महाबाहुः समहृष्यत वीर्यवान्

Sañjaya said: Seeing that Rāma was present, your son, the mighty-armed and valiant Duryodhana, who desired to fight, was delighted.

संजय ने कहा: यह देखकर कि राम उपस्थित थे, आपका पुत्र, महाबाहु और शूरवीर दुर्योधन, जो युद्ध करना चाहता था, प्रसन्न हुआ।

दृष्ट्वा लाङ्गलिनं राजा प्रत्युत्थाय च भारत प्रीत्या परमया युक्तो युधिष्ठिरमथाब्रवीत्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing the wielder of the plough, the king stood up, filled with great delight. He told Yudhiṣṭhira,

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हल चलाने वाले को देखकर राजा अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर उठ खड़ा हुआ। उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर से कहा,

समन्तपञ्चकं क्षिप्रमितो याम विशां पते प्रथितोत्तरवेदी सा देवलोके प्रजापतेः

"O lord of the earth! I will swiftly go to Samantapañcaka. In the world of the gods, it is known as Prajāpati's northern sacrificial altar.

"हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! मैं शीघ्र ही समन्तपञ्चक के पास जाऊँगा। देवताओं की दुनिया में, इसे प्रजापति की उत्तरी यज्ञ वेदी के रूप में जाना जाता है।

तस्मिन्महापुण्यतमे त्रैलोक्यस्य सनातने संग्रामे निधनं प्राप्य ध्रुवं स्वर्गो भविष्यति

It is eternal and the most sacred spot in the three worlds. It is certain that someone who is killed there will attain heaven."

यह तीनों लोकों में शाश्वत और सबसे पवित्र स्थान है। यह निश्चित है कि जो कोई वहां मारा जाएगा उसे स्वर्ग मिलेगा।”

तथेत्युक्त्वा महाराज कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः समन्तपञ्चकं वीरः प्रायादभिमुखः प्रभुः

O great king! Yudhiṣṭhira, Kuntī's son, agreed to these words. The brave lord advanced in the direction of Samantapañcaka.

हे महान राजा! कुंती के पुत्र युधिष्ठिर ने ये बातें मान लीं। बहादुर स्वामी सामंतपञ्चक की दिशा में आगे बढ़े।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम् पद्भ्याममर्षाद्द्युतिमानगच्छत्पाण्डवैः सह

At this, King Duryodhana also picked up a gigantic club. The immensely radiant and intolerant one advanced on foot, with the Pāṇḍava-s.

इस पर राजा दुर्योधन ने भी एक विशाल गदा उठा ली। वह अत्यंत तेजस्वी तथा असहिष्णु पाण्डवों के साथ पैदल ही आगे बढ़ा।

तथा यान्तं गदाहस्तं वर्मणा चापि दंशितम् अन्तरिक्षगता देवाः साधु साध्वित्यपूजयन् वातिकाश्च नरा येऽत्र दृष्ट्वा ते हर्षमागताः

As he advanced on foot, armoured and mailed, and with the club in his hand, the gods in the firmament uttered words of praise and honoured him. On seeing this, the men who were bards were also filled with joy.

जैसे ही वह पैदल, बख्तरबंद और हथियारों से लैस और हाथ में गदा लेकर आगे बढ़ा, आकाश में देवताओं ने प्रशंसा के शब्द बोले और उसका सम्मान किया। यह देख कर जो लोग भाट थे वे भी खुशी से भर गये।

स पाण्डवैः परिवृतः कुरुराजस्तवात्मजः मत्तस्येव गजेन्द्रस्य गतिमास्थाय सोऽव्रजत्

Surrounded by the Pāṇḍava-s, the king of the Kuru-s, your son, advanced—adopting the gait of a crazy king of elephants.

पाण्डवों से घिरा हुआ, कुरु-कुल का राजा, आपका पुत्र, हाथियों के उन्मत्त राजा की चाल अपनाते हुए आगे बढ़ा।

ततः शङ्खनिनादेन भेरीणां च महास्वनैः सिंहनादैश्च शूराणां दिशः सर्वाः प्रपूरिताः

Conch shells sounded and there was the great roar of drums. The brave ones roared like lions and filled all the directions.

शंख बजने लगे और नगाड़ों की महान गर्जना होने लगी। वीरों ने सिंह के समान दहाड़ कर सारी दिशाएँ भर दीं।

प्रतीच्यभिमुखं देशं यथोद्दिष्टं सुतेन ते गत्वा च तैः परिक्षिप्तं समन्तात्सर्वतोदिशम्

With your son, they went to the western direction that had been appointed. Having gone there, they spread themselves out in all the directions.

आपके पुत्र के साथ वे पश्चिम दिशा की ओर गये जो नियत की गयी थी। वहां जाकर वे सभी दिशाओं में फैल गये।

दक्षिणेन सरस्वत्याः स्वयनं तीर्थमुत्तमम् तस्मिन्देशे त्वनिरिणे तत्र युद्धमरोचयन्

This was a supreme tīrtha on the southern banks of the Sarasvatī. At that spot, the ground was not sandy and they chose this for the encounter.

यह सरस्वती के दक्षिणी तट पर एक सर्वोच्च तीर्थ था। उस स्थान पर ज़मीन रेतीली नहीं थी और उन्होंने मुठभेड़ के लिए इसे चुना।

ततो भीमो महाकोटिं गदां गृह्याथ वर्मभृत् बिभ्रद्रूपं महाराज सदृशं हि गरुत्मतः

Bhīmā was armoured and grasped an extremely thick club. O great king! In that resplendent form, he looked like Gāruḍa.

भीम के पास कवच था और उसने एक अत्यंत मोटी गदा पकड़ रखी थी। हे महान राजा! उस तेजस्वी रूप में वह गरुड़ के समान लग रहा था।

अवबद्धशिरस्त्राणः संख्ये काञ्चनवर्मभृत् रराज राजन्पुत्रस्ते काञ्चनः शैलराडिव

O king! For the encounter, your son fixed a helmet and was clad in golden armour. He was as dazzling as a golden mountain.

हे राजा! मुठभेड़ के लिए, आपके बेटे ने एक हेलमेट लगाया और सुनहरे कवच पहने हुए थे। वह सोने के पर्वत के समान चमकीला था।

वर्मभ्यां संवृतौ वीरौ भीमदुर्योधनावुभौ संयुगे च प्रकाशेते संरब्धाविव कुञ्जरौ

The brave Bhīmā and Duryodhana were both attired in armour. In that encounter, they were as resplendent as angry elephants.

वीर भीम और दुर्योधन दोनों कवच पहने हुए थे। उस मुठभेड़ में, वे क्रोधित हाथियों के समान तेजस्वी थे।

रणमण्डलमध्यस्थौ भ्रातरौ तौ नरर्षभौ अशोभेतां महाराज चन्द्रसूर्याविवोदितौ

Those two brothers, bulls among men, were stationed in that field of battle. O great king! They were as beautiful as the rising moon and the sun.

वे दोनों भाई, जो मनुष्यों में बैल थे, युद्ध के मैदान में तैनात थे। हे महान राजा! वे उगते चंद्रमा और सूर्य के समान सुंदर थे।

तावन्योन्यं निरीक्षेतां क्रुद्धाविव महाद्विपौ दहन्तौ लोचनै राजन्परस्परवधैषिणौ

They glanced towards each other, like two angry and giant elephants. O king! Wishing to kill each other, they burnt each other down with their eyes.

उन्होंने दो क्रोधित और विशाल हाथियों की तरह एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा। हे राजा! एक-दूसरे को मार डालने की इच्छा से उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को अपनी आँखों से जला डाला।

संप्रहृष्टमना राजन्गदामादाय कौरवः सृक्किणी संलिहन्राजन्क्रोधरक्तेक्षणः श्वसन्

O king! Delighted, Kaurava grasped the club. O king! His eyes were red with anger. He sighed and licked the corners of his mouth.

हे राजा! प्रसन्न होकर कौरव ने गदा पकड़ ली। हे राजा! उसकी आंखें गुस्से से लाल थीं. उसने आह भरी और अपने मुँह के कोनों को चाटा।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजा गदामादाय वीर्यवान् भीमसेनमभिप्रेक्ष्य गजो गजमिवाह्वयत्

The valiant King Duryodhana also grasped a club. He glanced towards Bhīmasena, like an elephant towards another elephant.

वीर राजा दुर्योधन ने भी गदा पकड़ ली। उसने भीमसेन की ओर ऐसे देखा, जैसे एक हाथी दूसरे हाथी की ओर देखता है।

अद्रिसारमयीं भीमस्तथैवादाय वीर्यवान् आह्वयामास नृपतिं सिंहः सिंहं यथा वने

The valiant Bhīmā also picked up one that possessed the essence of stone and challenged the king, like a lion against another lion in the forest.

शूरवीर भीम ने भी एक पत्थर उठाया और राजा को चुनौती दी, जैसे जंगल में एक शेर दूसरे शेर के खिलाफ होता है।

तावुद्यतगदापाणी दुर्योधनवृकोदरौ संयुगे स्म प्रकाशेते गिरी सशिखराविव

Duryodhana and Vṛkodara raised the clubs in their hands. In that encounter, they looked like mountains with peaks.

दुर्योधन और वृकोदर ने अपने हाथों में गदाएँ उठा लीं। उस मुठभेड़ में वे चोटियों वाले पर्वतों के समान लग रहे थे।

तावुभावभिसंक्रुद्धावुभौ भीमपराक्रमौ उभौ शिष्यौ गदायुद्धे रौहिणेयस्य धीमतः

Both of them were extremely angry and were terrible in their valour. In battling with clubs, both of them were the disciples of Rohiṇī's intelligent son.

वे दोनों अत्यंत क्रोधी और वीरता में भयानक थे। गदाओं से युद्ध करने में वे दोनों रोहिणी के बुद्धिमान पुत्र के शिष्य थे।

उभौ सदृशकर्माणौ यमवासवयोरिव तथा सदृशकर्माणौ वरुणस्य महाबलौ

They were the equals of each other in their deeds, like Yāma and Vāsava. In their deeds, they were the equals of the immensely strong Vāruṇa.

वे यम और वासव की तरह अपने कर्मों में एक-दूसरे के बराबर थे। अपने कर्मों में वे अत्यंत बलशाली वरुण के तुल्य थे।

वासुदेवस्य रामस्य तथा वैश्रवणस्य च सदृशौ तौ महाराज मधुकैटभयोर्युधि

They were like Vāsudeva, or Rāma or Vaiśravaṇa. O great king! As warriors, they were the equals of Madhu and Kaiṭabha.

वे वासुदेव, या राम या वैश्रवण की तरह थे। हे महान राजा! योद्धा के रूप में, वे मधु और कैटभ के समकक्ष थे।

उभौ सदृशकर्माणौ रणे सुन्दोपसुन्दयोः तथैव कालस्य समौ मृत्योश्चैव परंतपौ

In their deeds in a battle, they were the equals of Sunda and Upansunda. 9 Those scorchers of enemies were like Destiny and like Death.

युद्ध में अपने कार्यों में वे सुन्द और उपानसुन्द के बराबर थे। 9 शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले वे नियति और मृत्यु के समान थे।

अन्योन्यमभिधावन्तौ मत्ताविव महाद्विपौ वाशितासंगमे दृप्तौ शरदीव मदोत्कटौ

They rushed towards each other, like two crazy and giant elephants, as if they were proud and maddened in the autumn season, desiring to have intercourse.

वे दो पागल और विशाल हाथियों की तरह एक-दूसरे की ओर दौड़े, मानो वे पतझड़ के मौसम में गर्व और उन्मत्त होकर संभोग करने की इच्छा कर रहे हों।

मत्ताविव जिगीषन्तौ मातङ्गौ भरतर्षभौ उभौ क्रोधविषं दीप्तं वमन्तावुरगाविव

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! They were like crazy elephants that wished to defeat each other. Like blazing serpents, they seemed to vomit out the poison of wrath towards each other.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! वे पागल हाथियों की तरह थे जो एक दूसरे को हराना चाहते थे। धधकते हुए साँपों की तरह, वे एक-दूसरे के प्रति क्रोध का ज़हर उगलते प्रतीत हो रहे थे।

अन्योन्यमभिसंरब्धौ प्रेक्षमाणावरिंदमौ उभौ भरतशार्दूलौ विक्रमेण समन्वितौ

Those scorchers of enemies angrily glanced towards each other. Both those tigers of the Bhārata lineage were full of valour.

शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले वे क्रोध से एक-दूसरे की ओर देखने लगे। भरत वंश के वे दोनों बाघ वीरता से परिपूर्ण थे।

सिंहाविव दुराधर्षौ गदायुद्धे परंतपौ नखदंष्ट्रायुधौ वीरौ व्याघ्राविव दुरुत्सहौ

In fighting with clubs, those two destroyers of enemies were as unassailable as lions. Those two brave warriors were difficult to withstand, like tigers armed with claws and teeth.

वे दोनों शत्रुसंहारक गदाओं से युद्ध करते हुए सिंह के समान अजेय थे। उन दोनों वीर योद्धाओं का सामना करना कठिन था, जैसे पंजों और दांतों से लैस बाघों का।

प्रजासंहरणे क्षुब्धौ समुद्राविव दुस्तरौ लोहिताङ्गाविव क्रुद्धौ प्रतपन्तौ महारथौ

They were like two agitated oceans, impossible to cross, that were about to destroy beings. The angry mahāratha-s scorched, like the one with the red limbs and rays.

वे दो उत्तेजित महासागरों की तरह थे, जिन्हें पार करना असंभव था, जो प्राणियों को नष्ट करने वाले थे। क्रोधित महारथ लाल अंग और किरणों वाले की तरह झुलस गए।

रश्मिमन्तौ महात्मानौ दीप्तिमन्तौ महाबलौ ददृशाते कुरुश्रेष्ठौ कालसूर्याविवोदितौ

The great-souled and immensely strong ones blazed. The best ones among the Kuru lineage were like two suns that had arisen at the time of destruction.

महाप्राण और अत्यंत बलशाली जल उठे। कुरु वंश में सर्वश्रेष्ठ लोग विनाश के समय उत्पन्न हुए दो सूर्यों के समान थे।

व्याघ्राविव सुसंरब्धौ गर्जन्ताविव तोयदौ जहृषाते महाबाहू सिंहौ केसरिणाविव

They were as angry as tigers and roared like monsoon clouds. The mighty-armed ones were as cheerful as lions with manes.

वे बाघों के समान क्रोधित थे और मानसून के बादलों के समान गर्जना करते थे। महाबाहु लोग जटाधारी सिंह के समान प्रसन्न थे।

गजाविव सुसंरब्धौ ज्वलिताविव पावकौ ददृशुस्तौ महात्मानौ सशृङ्गाविव पर्वतौ

They were as angry as elephants and flamed like the fire. The great-souled ones were seen to be like mountains with peaks.

वे हाथियों के समान क्रोधित और अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित थे। वे महानुभाव शिखरों वाले पर्वतों के समान जान पड़ते थे।

रोषात्प्रस्फुरमाणोष्ठौ निरीक्षन्तौ परस्परम् तौ समेतौ महात्मानौ गदाहस्तौ नरोत्तमौ

Their lips were swollen in rage and they glanced towards each other. With clubs in their hands, those best of men clashed against each other.

उनके होंठ गुस्से से सूज गए और उन्होंने एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा। अपने हाथों में गदाएँ लेकर वे श्रेष्ठ पुरुष एक-दूसरे से भिड़ गये।

उभौ परमसंहृष्टावुभौ परमसंमतौ सदश्वाविव हेषन्तौ बृंहन्ताविव कुञ्जरौ

Both of them were extremely delighted and also revered each other. They seemed to neigh like well-trained horses and trumpet like elephants.

वे दोनों बेहद खुश थे और एक-दूसरे का सम्मान भी करते थे। वे अच्छी तरह से प्रशिक्षित घोड़ों की तरह हिनहिनाते और हाथियों की तरह तुरही बजाते प्रतीत होते थे।

वृषभाविव गर्जन्तौ दुर्योधनवृकोदरौ दैत्याविव बलोन्मत्तौ रेजतुस्तौ नरोत्तमौ

Duryodhana and Vṛkodara bellowed like bulls. Those two best of men were as strong as daitya-s.

दुर्योधन और वृकोदर बैल की तरह चिल्ला रहे थे। वे दोनों श्रेष्ठ पुरुष दैत्यों के समान बलशाली थे।

ततो दुर्योधनो राजन्निदमाह युधिष्ठिरम् सृञ्जयैः सह तिष्ठन्तं तपन्तमिव भास्करम्

O king! Duryodhana spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira, who was stationed with the Sṛñjaya-s, like a scorching sun.

हे राजा! दुर्योधन ने सृंजय सेना के साथ तैनात युधिष्ठिर से चिलचिलाती धूप की तरह बात की।

इदं व्यवसितं युद्धं मम भीमस्य चोभयोः उपोपविष्टाः पश्यध्वं विमर्दं नृपसत्तमाः

"O best of kings! Be seated and witness this encounter that will take place between me and Bhīmā."

"हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! बैठ जाओ और मेरे और भीम के बीच होने वाली इस मुठभेड़ को देखो।"

ततः समुपविष्टं तत्सुमहद्राजमण्डलम् विराजमानं ददृशे दिवीवादित्यमण्डलम्

At this, that large circle of kings sat down. They were seen to be as beautiful as a collection of gods in the firmament.

इस पर राजाओं का वह बड़ा मण्डल बैठ गया। वे आकाश में देवताओं के संग्रह के समान सुंदर दिखाई देते थे।

तेषां मध्ये महाबाहुः श्रीमान्केशवपूर्वजः उपविष्टो महाराज पूज्यमानः समन्ततः

O great king! Honoured by them from every direction, Keśava's mighty-armed and handsome elder brother seated himself in their midst.

हे महान राजा! हर दिशा से उनके द्वारा सम्मानित, केशव के शक्तिशाली-बाहु और सुंदर बड़े भाई उनके बीच में बैठे।

शुशुभे राजमध्यस्थो नीलवासाः सितप्रभः नक्षत्रैरिव संपूर्णो वृतो निशि निशाकरः

The fair-complexioned one with the blue garments was beautiful in the midst of the kings, like the full moon in the night, surrounded by the stars.

वह नीले वस्त्र धारण करने वाली वह गौर वर्ण वाली राजाओं के बीच में ऐसी शोभा पा रही थी, जैसे रात में पूर्णिमा का चाँद तारों से घिरा हुआ हो।

तौ तथा तु महाराज गदाहस्तौ दुरासदौ अन्योन्यं वाग्भिरुग्राभिस्तक्षमाणौ व्यवस्थितौ

O great king! With clubs in their hands, they were unassailable. They were stationed there and censured each other with fierce words.

हे महान राजा! हाथों में क्लब होने के कारण वे अजेय थे। वे वहाँ ठहर गये और एक-दूसरे की भयंकर शब्दों में निन्दा करने लगे।

अप्रियाणि ततोऽन्योन्यमुक्त्वा तौ कुरुपुंगवौ उदीक्षन्तौ स्थितौ वीरौ वृत्रशक्राविवाहवे

Having spoken those unpleasant words towards each other, those two brave bulls of the Kuru lineage glanced towards each other, like Vṛtra and Śākra in a battle.

एक-दूसरे के प्रति ऐसे अप्रिय शब्द कहने के बाद, कुरु वंश के उन दो बहादुर बैलों ने युद्ध में वृत्र और शक्र की तरह एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा।
