संजय उवाच तस्मिंस्तु निहते शूरे शाल्वे समितिशोभने तवाभज्यद्बलं वेगाद्वातेनेव महाद्रुमः

Sañjaya said: When the brave Śālva, the ornament of an assembly, was killed, that army was agitated, like a giant tree struck by a forceful storm.

संजय ने कहा: जब सभा के आभूषण वीर शाल्व मारे गये, तो वह सेना तीव्र तूफान से गिरे हुए विशाल वृक्ष के समान क्षुब्ध हो उठी।

तत्प्रभग्नं बलं दृष्ट्वा कृतवर्मा महारथः दधार समरे शूरः शत्रुसैन्यं महाबलः

On seeing that the army was routed, the immensely strong and valiant mahāratha Kritavarma resisted the soldiers of the enemy in the battle.

यह देखकर कि सेना हार गयी, अत्यंत बलशाली और वीर महारथी कृतवर्मा ने युद्ध में शत्रु के सैनिकों का प्रतिरोध किया।

संनिवृत्तास्तु ते शूरा दृष्ट्वा सात्वतमाहवे शैलोपमं स्थितं राजन्कीर्यमाणं शरैर्युधि

O king! The descendant of the Sātvata lineage was stationed in the battle and was enveloped with arrows.

हे राजा! सात्वत वंश का वंशज युद्ध में तैनात था और तीरों से घिरा हुआ था।

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं कुरूणां पाण्डवैः सह निवृत्तानां महाराज मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम्

On seeing this, the brave ones returned and a battle between the Kuru-s and the Pāṇḍava-s commenced. O great king! They did not retreat and preferred death over retreat.

यह देखकर, बहादुर लोग लौट आये और कुरु-पांडवों के बीच युद्ध शुरू हो गया। हे महान राजा! वे पीछे नहीं हटे और पीछे हटने की बजाय मौत को प्राथमिकता दी।

तत्राश्चर्यमभूद्युद्धं सात्वतस्य परैः सह यदेको वारयामास पाण्डुसेनां दुरासदाम्

There was a wonderful battle between Sātvata and the enemy. Single-handedly, he countered the Pāṇḍu soldiers, who were difficult to resist.

सात्वत और शत्रु के बीच अद्भुत युद्ध हुआ। उन्होंने अकेले ही पाण्डु सैनिकों का मुकाबला किया, जिनका विरोध करना कठिन था।

तेषामन्योन्यसुहृदां कृते कर्मणि दुष्करे सिंहनादः प्रहृष्टानां दिवःस्पृक्सुमहानभूत्

On witnessing this, other well-wishers performed extremely difficult deeds. They cheerfully roared like lions and that great sound rose up to heaven.

यह देखकर अन्य शुभचिंतकों ने अत्यंत कठिन कर्म किये। वे प्रसन्नतापूर्वक सिंहों के समान दहाड़ने लगे और वह महान ध्वनि स्वर्ग तक उठी।

तेन शब्देन वित्रस्तान्पाञ्चालान्भरतर्षभ शिनेर्नप्ता महाबाहुरन्वपद्यत सात्यकिः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! The Pāñcāla-s were frightened by that noise. However, Śini's grandson, the mighty-armed Sātyaki, attacked.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! उस शोर से पंचाल भयभीत हो गये। हालाँकि, शिनि के पोते, शक्तिशाली-बाहु सात्यकि ने हमला किया।

स समासाद्य राजानं क्षेमधूर्तिं महाबलम् सप्तभिर्निशितैर्बाणैरनयद्यमसादनम्

He advanced against the immensely strong Kṣemadhūrti, and using seven sharp arrows, conveyed him to Yāma's abode.

वह अत्यंत बलशाली क्षेमधूर्ति के विरुद्ध आगे बढ़ा और सात तीखे बाणों का प्रयोग करके उसे यम के निवास स्थान पर पहुँचा दिया।

तमायान्तं महाबाहुं प्रवपन्तं शिताञ्शरान् जवेनाभ्यपतद्धीमान्हार्दिक्यः शिनिपुंगवम्

The mighty-armed descendant of the Śini lineage tormented with sharp arrows. As he attacked, Hārdikya rushed against him, terrible and fierce.

शिनि वंश के शक्तिशाली भुजाओं वाले वंशज को तीखे बाणों से सताया गया। जैसे ही उसने हमला किया, हार्दिक्य भयानक और भयंकर रूप से उस पर टूट पड़ा।

तौ सिंहाविव नर्दन्तौ धन्विनौ रथिनां वरौ अन्योन्यमभ्यधावेतां शस्त्रप्रवरधारिणौ

Those two archers, best among rāṭha-s, roared like lions. They rushed against each other, wielding the best of weapons.

रथकारों में श्रेष्ठ वे दोनों धनुर्धर सिंह के समान दहाड़ने लगे। वे बेहतरीन हथियार लहराते हुए एक-दूसरे पर टूट पड़े।

पाण्डवाः सह पाञ्चालैर्योधाश्चान्ये नृपोत्तमाः प्रेक्षकाः समपद्यन्त तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः

The Pāṇḍava-s, the Pāñcāla-s, other warriors and the best of kings became spectators to that clash between those two lions among men.

पाण्डव, पंचाल, अन्य योद्धा तथा श्रेष्ठ राजा उन दो नर सिंहों के बीच उस संघर्ष के दर्शक बन गये।

नाराचैर्वत्सदन्तैश्च वृष्ण्यन्धकमहारथौ अभिजघ्नतुरन्योन्यं प्रहृष्टाविव कुञ्जरौ

The mahāratha-s from the Vṛṣṇi and Andhaka lineages used vatsadanta-s and iron arrows. Like cheerful elephants, they tried to kill each other.

वृष्णि और अंधक वंश के महारथ वत्सदंत और लोहे के तीरों का उपयोग करते थे। प्रसन्न हाथियों की तरह, उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को मारने की कोशिश की।

चरन्तौ विविधान्मार्गान्हार्दिक्यशिनिपुंगवौ मुहुरन्तर्दधाते तौ बाणवृष्ट्या परस्परम्

Hārdikya and the bull among the Śini lineage roamed around in diverse motions. They repeatedly struck each other with showers of arrows.

शिनि वंश के हार्दिक्य और बैल विविध गतियों में घूमते थे। वे बारंबार एक दूसरे पर बाणों की वर्षा से प्रहार करने लगे।

चापवेगबलोद्धूतान्मार्गणान्वृष्णिसिंहयोः आकाशे समपश्याम पतंगानिव शीघ्रगान्

Those lions from the Vṛṣṇi lineage stretched their bows with force and strength and shot arrows. We saw these in the sky, travelling fast, like insects.

वृष्णि वंश के उन सिंहों ने बल और शक्ति से अपने धनुष बढ़ाये और बाण छोड़े। हमने इन्हें आकाश में कीड़ों की तरह तेजी से यात्रा करते हुए देखा।

तमेकं सत्यकर्माणमासाद्य हृदिकात्मजः अविध्यन्निशितैर्बाणैश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान्

Hṛdika's son approached the one who was the performer of truthful deeds and used four sharp arrows to pierce his four horses.

हृदिका का पुत्र सत्यकर्म करने वाले के पास पहुँचा और उसने चार तीखे बाणों से उसके चारों घोड़ों को छेद डाला।

स दीर्घबाहुः संक्रुद्धस्तोत्त्रार्दित इव द्विपः अष्टाभिः कृतवर्माणमविध्यत्परमेषुभिः

The long-armed one became angry, like an elephant struck with a goad. He used eight supreme arrows to pierce Kritavarma.

दीर्घबाहु क्रोधित हो गया, जैसे किसी हाथी को अंकुश लग गया हो। उन्होंने कृतवर्मा को बींधने के लिए आठ श्रेष्ठ बाणों का प्रयोग किया।

ततः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैः कृतवर्मा शिलाशितैः सात्यकिं त्रिभिराहत्य धनुरेकेन चिच्छिदे

Kritavarma stretched his bow back all the way up to his ears. Piercing Sātyaki with three arrows, he severed his bow with another one.

कृतवर्मा ने अपना धनुष पीछे कानों तक बढ़ाया। उन्होंने तीन बाणों से सात्यकि को घायल करके दूसरे बाण से उनका धनुष तोड़ दिया।

निकृत्तं तद्धनुःश्रेष्ठमपास्य शिनिपुंगवः अन्यदादत्त वेगेन शैनेयः सशरं धनुः

When that best of bows was severed, the bull among the Śini lineage picked up another bow with an arrow affixed to it.

जब वह सर्वोत्तम धनुष टूट गया, तो शिनि वंश के बैल ने बाण चढ़ाकर दूसरा धनुष उठा लिया।

तदादाय धनुःश्रेष्ठं वरिष्ठः सर्वधन्विनाम् आरोप्य च महावीर्यो महाबुद्धिर्महाबलः

The one who was best among all archers, picked up that best of bows with great speed. He was immensely valorous, immensely intelligent and immensely strong.

जो समस्त धनुर्धरों में श्रेष्ठ था, उसने उस श्रेष्ठ धनुष को बड़े वेग से उठा लिया। वह अत्यंत वीर, अत्यंत बुद्धिमान और अत्यंत बलशाली था।

अमृष्यमाणो धनुषश्छेदनं कृतवर्मणा कुपितोऽतिरथः शीघ्रं कृतवर्माणमभ्ययात्

He was unable to tolerate the fact that his bow had been severed by Kritavarma. Enraged, the atiratha speedily attacked Kritavarma.

वह इस बात को सहन नहीं कर पा रहा था कि कृतवर्मा ने उसका धनुष तोड़ दिया है। क्रोधित होकर अतिरथ ने तेजी से कृतवर्मा पर आक्रमण कर दिया।

ततः सुनिशितैर्बाणैर्दशभिः शिनिपुंगवः जघान सूतमश्वांश्च ध्वजं च कृतवर्मणः

Using ten extremely sharp arrows, the bull among the Śini lineage struck Kritavarma's charioteer, horses and standard.

शिनि वंश के बैल ने दस अत्यंत तीखे बाणों का उपयोग करके कृतवर्मा के सारथी, घोड़ों और ध्वज पर प्रहार किया।

ततो राजन्महेष्वासः कृतवर्मा महारथः हताश्वसूतं संप्रेक्ष्य रथं हेमपरिष्कृतम्

His gold-decorated chariot, horses and charioteer were destroyed. The great archer, mahāratha Kritavarma saw this.

उनके सोने से सजा हुआ रथ, घोड़े और सारथी नष्ट हो गये। महान धनुर्धर, महारथ कृतवर्मा ने यह देखा।

रोषेण महताविष्टः शूलमुद्यम्य मारिष चिक्षेप भुजवेगेन जिघांसुः शिनिपुंगवम्

O king! O venerable one! He was overcome by great rage and picked up a javelin. With the force of his arms, he hurled this towards the bull among the Śini lineage, wishing to kill him.

हे राजा! हे आदरणीय! वह बहुत गुस्से में आ गया और उसने भाला उठा लिया। उसने अपनी भुजाओं के बल से सिनी वंश के बैल की ओर उसे मारने की इच्छा से फेंका।

तच्छूलं सात्वतो ह्याजौ निर्भिद्य निशितैः शरैः चूर्णितं पातयामास मोहयन्निव माधवम् ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन हृद्येनं समताडयत्

But Sātvata shattered the javelin with his sharp arrows. Shattered, it fell down, and Mādhava was confused. His horses had been slain. His charioteer had been killed. He then used a broad-headed arrow to strike him in the chest.

लेकिन सात्वत ने अपने तीखे बाणों से भाले को चकनाचूर कर दिया। वह टूटकर नीचे गिर गया और माधव भ्रमित हो गया। उसके घोड़े मारे गये थे। उनका सारथी मारा गया था. फिर उसने उसकी छाती में वार करने के लिए एक चौड़े सिर वाले तीर का इस्तेमाल किया।

स युद्धे युयुधानेन हताश्वो हतसारथिः कृतवर्मा कृतास्त्रेण धरणीमन्वपद्यत

In the encounter, Yuyudhāna, skilled in the use of weapons, made Kritavarma fall down on the ground.

मुठभेड़ में अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल युयुधान ने कृतवर्मा को जमीन पर गिरा दिया।

तस्मिन्सात्यकिना वीरे द्वैरथे विरथीकृते समपद्यत सर्वेषां सैन्यानां सुमहद्भयम्

In the duel, the brave one was deprived of his chariot by Sātyaki.

द्वंद्व युद्ध में सात्यकि ने उस वीर को उसके रथ से वंचित कर दिया।

पुत्रस्य तव चात्यर्थं विषादः समपद्यत हतसूते हताश्वे च विरथे कृतवर्मणि

At this, all the soldiers were overcome by great fear and your sons were miserable, because Kritavarma had been deprived of his chariot and his horses and charioteer had been slain.

इस पर सभी सैनिक अत्यंत भय से ग्रस्त हो गये और आपके पुत्र दुःखी हो गये, क्योंकि कृतवर्मा का रथ छिन गया था और उसके घोड़े तथा सारथी मारे गये थे।

हताश्वं च समालक्ष्य हतसूतमरिंदमम् अभ्यधावत्कृपो राजञ्जिघांसुः शिनिपुंगवम्

The horses of that scorcher of enemies had been killed. His charioteer had been slain. O king! On seeing this, Kṛpa attacked the bull among the Śini lineage, wishing to kill him.

शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले उस राजा के घोड़े मारे गये थे। उनका सारथी मारा गया था। हे राजा! यह देखकर कृपा ने शिनि वंश के बैल को मारने की इच्छा से उस पर हमला कर दिया।

तमारोप्य रथोपस्थे मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् अपोवाह महाबाहुस्तूर्णमायोधनादपि

While all the archers looked on, the mighty-armed one swiftly picked him up on his own chariot and bore him away from the field of battle.

जब सभी धनुर्धर देख रहे थे, तब महाबाहु धनुर्धर ने तेजी से उसे अपने रथ पर उठा लिया और युद्ध के मैदान से दूर ले गया।

शैनेयेऽधिष्ठिते राजन्विरथे कृतवर्मणि दुर्योधनबलं सर्वं पुनरासीत्पराङ्मुखम्

O king! Kritavarma had been deprived of his chariot and Śini's descendant remained stationed there. All of Duryodhana's soldiers again became reluctant to fight.

हे राजा! कृतवर्मा को उसके रथ से वंचित कर दिया गया था और शिनि का वंशज वहीं तैनात रहा। दुर्योधन के सभी सैनिक फिर से लड़ने के लिए अनिच्छुक हो गए।

तत्परे नावबुध्यन्त सैन्येन रजसावृते तावकाः प्रद्रुता राजन्दुर्योधनमृते नृपम्

Because they were covered in dust, the soldiers could no longer discern the enemy. O king! With the exception of King Duryodhana, those on your side ran away.

क्योंकि वे धूल से ढके हुए थे, सैनिक अब दुश्मन को पहचान नहीं पा रहे थे। हे राजा! राजा दुर्योधन को छोड़कर आपके पक्ष के सभी लोग भाग गये।

दुर्योधनस्तु संप्रेक्ष्य भग्नं स्वबलमन्तिकात् जवेनाभ्यपतत्तूर्णं सर्वांश्चैको न्यवारयत्

But Duryodhana, seeing his own army shattered from nearby, quickly rushed forth with speed. Single-handedly, he warded off all of them.

परंतु दुर्योधन पास से ही अपनी सेना को बिखरता देख तेजी से आगे बढ़ा। अकेले ही उसने उन सभी को मार गिराया।

पाण्डूंश्च सर्वान्संक्रुद्धो धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम् शिखण्डिनं द्रौपदेयान्पाञ्चालानां च ये गणाः

O venerable one! Angered, he quickly attacked all the Pāṇḍu-s, Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, Draupadī's sons, the large numbers of Pāñcāla-s,

हे आदरणीय! क्रोधित होकर, उसने शीघ्रता से सभी पांडु-पृष्ट, धृष्टद्युम्न, शिखंडी, द्रौपदी के पुत्रों, बड़ी संख्या में पंचालों पर हमला कर दिया।

केकयान्सोमकांश्चैव पाञ्चालांश्चैव मारिष असंभ्रमं दुराधर्षः शितैरस्त्रैरवारयत्

the Kekaya-s, the Somaka-s and the Pāñcāla-s and countered them. He was fearless and unassailable and repulsed them with sharp weapons.

केकय-एस, सोमक-एस और पंचाल-एस और उनका मुकाबला किया। वह निडर और अजेय था और उसने उन्हें धारदार हथियारों से खदेड़ दिया।

अतिष्ठदाहवे यत्तः पुत्रस्तव महाबलः यथा यज्ञे महानग्निर्मन्त्रपूतः प्रकाशयन्

Your immensely strong son endeavoured and remained stationed in the battle. He was as resplendent as the great fire on a sacrificial altar, invoked with mantra-s.

आपके अत्यंत बलवान पुत्र ने प्रयत्न किया और युद्ध में तैनात रहा। वह यज्ञवेदी पर मंत्रों से अभिमंत्रित महान अग्नि के समान देदीप्यमान था।

तं परे नाभ्यवर्तन्त मर्त्या मृत्युमिवाहवे अथान्यं रथमास्थाय हार्दिक्यः समपद्यत

In the battle, the enemy was incapable of approaching him, like mortal beings against Death. Hārdikya ascended another chariot and attacked.

युद्ध में, शत्रु मृत्यु के विरुद्ध नश्वर प्राणियों की तरह, उसके पास आने में असमर्थ था। हार्दिक्य दूसरे रथ पर चढ़े और हमला कर दिया।
