वैशंपायन उवाच ततस्तीर्थवरं रामो ययौ बदरपाचनम् तपस्विसिद्धचरितं यत्र कन्या धृतव्रता

Vaiśampāyana said: Rāma then went to the supreme tīrtha of Badarapācana. Many ascetics and Siddha-s roamed around there.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: राम फिर बदरापाचन के सर्वोच्च तीर्थ में गए। अनेक तपस्वी और सिद्ध वहाँ विचरते थे।

भरद्वाजस्य दुहिता रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि स्रुचावती नाम विभो कुमारी ब्रह्मचारिणी

Bhāradvāja's daughter was unmatched on earth in beauty. The maiden was firm in her vows. O lord! Her name was Sruchavati and the maiden observed brahmacarya.

भारद्वाज की पुत्री सुंदरता में पृथ्वी पर बेजोड़ थी। युवती अपनी प्रतिज्ञा पर दृढ़ थी। हे भगवान! उसका नाम श्रुचवती था और युवती ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करती थी।

तपश्चचार सात्युग्रं नियमैर्बहुभिर्नृप भर्ता मे देवराजः स्यादिति निश्चित्य भामिनी

O king! She performed severe austerities and observed many rules. The beautiful one had made up her mind to obtain the king of the gods as her husband.

हे राजा! उसने कठोर तपस्या की और कई नियमों का पालन किया। उस सुन्दरी ने देवताओं के राजा को अपने पति के रूप में प्राप्त करने का मन बना लिया था।

समास्तस्या व्यतिक्रान्ता बह्व्यः कुरुकुलोद्वह चरन्त्या नियमांस्तांस्तान्स्त्रीभिस्तीव्रान्सुदुश्चरान्

O extender of the Kuru lineage! A long period of time passed. She continued to observe those terrible rituals, which are extremely difficult for women to observe.

हे कुरु वंश के विस्तारक! काफी समय बीत गया. वह उन भयानक रीति-रिवाजों का पालन करती रही, जिनका पालन करना स्त्रियों के लिए अत्यंत कठिन होता है।

तस्यास्तु तेन वृत्तेन तपसा च विशां पते भक्त्या च भगवान्प्रीतः परया पाकशासनः

O lord of the earth! The illustrious chastiser of Pāka was supremely delighted because of her conduct, austerities and devotion.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! पाक का यशस्वी दंड देने वाला उसके आचरण, तपस्या और भक्ति से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुआ।

आजगामाश्रमं तस्यास्त्रिदशाधिपतिः प्रभुः आस्थाय रूपं विप्रर्षेर्वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः

The lord, the king of the thirty gods, arrived at the hermitage, assuming the form of the great-souled brāhmaṇa riṣi, Vāsiṣṭha.

भगवान, तीस देवताओं के राजा, महान आत्मा वाले ब्राह्मण ऋषि, वशिष्ठ का रूप धारण करके आश्रम में पहुंचे।

सा तं दृष्ट्वोग्रतपसं वसिष्ठं तपतां वरम् आचारैर्मुनिभिर्दृष्टैः पूजयामास भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing Vāsiṣṭha, supreme among ascetics and the performer of fierce austerities, she worshipped him.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! तपस्वियों में श्रेष्ठ और घोर तपस्या करने वाले वशिष्ठ को देखकर उसने उनकी पूजा की।

उवाच नियमज्ञा च कल्याणी सा प्रियंवदा भगवन्मुनिशार्दूल किमाज्ञापयसि प्रभो

The fortunate one, knowledgeable about rules and sweet in speech said, "O illustrious one! O tiger among sages! O lord! What is your command?

वह भाग्यशाली, नियमों का ज्ञाता और मधुर वाणी वाला था, उसने कहा, "हे महामहिम! हे ऋषियों में व्याघ्र! हे प्रभु! आपकी क्या आज्ञा है?"

सर्वमद्य यथाशक्ति तव दास्यामि सुव्रत शक्रभक्त्या तु ते पाणिं न दास्यामि कथंचन

O one who is excellent in vows! I will give you everything, in accordance with my capacity. However, because I am devoted to Śākra, I will not be able to give you my hand.

हे व्रतों में श्रेष्ठ! मैं तुम्हें अपनी क्षमता के अनुसार सब कुछ दूँगा। हालाँकि, चूँकि मैं शक्र के प्रति समर्पित हूँ, इसलिए मैं आपको अपना हाथ नहीं दे पाऊँगा।

व्रतैश्च नियमैश्चैव तपसा च तपोधन शक्रस्तोषयितव्यो वै मया त्रिभुवनेश्वरः

O one who is rich in austerities! My vows, rules and austerities are an attempt to satisfy Śākra, the lord of the three worlds."

हे तपस्या के धनी! मेरी प्रतिज्ञा, नियम और तपस्या तीनों लोकों के स्वामी भगवान शंकर को संतुष्ट करने का एक प्रयास है।"

इत्युक्तो भगवान्देवः स्मयन्निव निरीक्ष्य ताम् उवाच नियमज्ञां तां सान्त्वयन्निव भारत

Having been thus addressed, the illustrious god smiled and glanced at her. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! He assured the one who knew about rules and said,

इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर, प्रसिद्ध देवता मुस्कुराये और उसकी ओर देखा। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने नियम जानने वाले को आश्वस्त करते हुए कहा.

उग्रं तपश्चरसि वै विदिता मेऽसि सुव्रते यदर्थमयमारम्भस्तव कल्याणि हृद्गतः

"O one good in vows! I know that you are performing fierce austerities. O fortunate one! O one with a beautiful face! All the objectives that you have in your heart will be obtained.

"हे व्रत में निपुण! मैं जानता हूं कि आप घोर तपस्या कर रहे हैं। हे भाग्यशाली! हे सुंदर मुख वाले! आपके हृदय में जो भी उद्देश्य हैं वे सभी प्राप्त होंगे।

तच्च सर्वं यथाभूतं भविष्यति वरानने तपसा लभ्यते सर्वं सर्वं तपसि तिष्ठति

Everything can be obtained through austerities. Everything is established in austerities.

तपस्या से सब कुछ प्राप्त किया जा सकता है। तपस्या में सब स्थापित है।

यानि स्थानानि दिव्यानि विबुधानां शुभानने तपसा तानि प्राप्यानि तपोमूलं महत्सुखम्

O one with an auspicious face! All the celestial states of the gods can be obtained through austerities.Austerities are the source of great happiness.

हे शुभ मुख वाले! देवताओं की सभी दिव्य अवस्थाएँ तपस्या के माध्यम से प्राप्त की जा सकती हैं। तपस्या महान खुशी का स्रोत है।

इह कृत्वा तपो घोरं देहं संन्यस्य मानवाः देवत्वं यान्ति कल्याणि शृणु चेदं वचो मम

Those men, who perform great austerities and cast aside their bodies on earth, obtain the status of gods. O fortunate one! Listen to these words of mine!

जो मनुष्य महान तपस्या करते हैं और अपने शरीर को पृथ्वी पर त्याग देते हैं, उन्हें देवताओं का दर्जा प्राप्त होता है। हे भाग्यवान! मेरे इन शब्दों को सुनो!

पचस्वैतानि सुभगे बदराणि शुभव्रते पचेत्युक्त्वा स भगवाञ्जगाम बलसूदनः

O immensely fortunate one! O one who is auspicious in vows. Cook these berries." Having asked her to boil them, the illustrious slayer of Bāla went away.

हे परम भाग्यशाली! हे व्रतों में मंगल करने वाले! इन जामुनों को पकाओ।" उसे उन्हें उबालने के लिए कहने के बाद, बाला का शानदार हत्यारा चला गया।

आमन्त्र्य तां तु कल्याणीं ततो जप्यं जजाप सः अविदूरे ततस्तस्मादाश्रमात्तीर्थ उत्तमे इन्द्रतीर्थे महाराज त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुते

Having asked the fortunate one, he went to an excellent spot that was not far from that hermitage, so as to chant and meditate there. O great king! This is famous in the three worlds as Indratīrtha.

भाग्यशाली व्यक्ति से पूछकर, वह एक उत्कृष्ट स्थान पर गया जो उस आश्रम से ज्यादा दूर नहीं था, ताकि वहां जप और ध्यान कर सके। हे महान राजा! यह तीनों लोकों में इंद्रतीर्थ के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है।

तस्या जिज्ञासनार्थं स भगवान्पाकशासनः बदराणामपचनं चकार विबुधाधिपः

The illustrious chastiser of Pāka wished to test her. Hence, the lord of the gods asked her to boil those berries.

पाक के यशस्वी दंड देने वाले ने उसकी परीक्षा लेनी चाही। इसलिए, देवताओं के स्वामी ने उनसे उन जामुनों को उबालने के लिए कहा।

ततः स प्रयता राजन्वाग्यता विगतक्लमा तत्परा शुचिसंवीता पावके समधिश्रयत् अपचद्राजशार्दूल बदराणि महाव्रता

O king! Cleansed of sin, the humble one tried to do this. She purified herself and offered kindling into a fire. O tiger among kings! The one who was great in her vows began to boil those berries.

हे राजा! पाप से मुक्त होकर, विनम्र व्यक्ति ने ऐसा करने का प्रयास किया। उसने खुद को शुद्ध किया और आग में जलने की पेशकश की। हे राजाओं में व्याघ्र! जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में बड़ी थी, वह उन जामुनों को उबालने लगी।

तस्याः पचन्त्याः सुमहान्कालोऽगात्पुरुषर्षभ न च स्म तान्यपच्यन्त दिनं च क्षयमभ्यगात्

O bull among men! As she boiled them, a long period of time passed. The berries were not boiled and the day was over.

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! जैसे ही उसने उन्हें उबाला, काफी समय बीत गया। जामुन उबले नहीं थे और दिन ख़त्म हो गया था।

हुताशनेन दग्धश्च यस्तस्याः काष्ठसंचयः अकाष्ठमग्निं सा दृष्ट्वा स्वशरीरमथादहत्

The wood that she had stored was consumed by the fire. On seeing that the fire no longer had any wood, she began to burn her body.

उसने जो लकड़ियाँ जमा करके रखी थीं, वे आग में जलकर नष्ट हो गईं। यह देखकर कि आग में लकड़ी नहीं रही, वह अपने शरीर को जलाने लगी।

पादौ प्रक्षिप्य सा पूर्वं पावके चारुदर्शना दग्धौ दग्धौ पुनः पादावुपावर्तयतानघा

At first, the beautiful one thrust her feet into the fire. As her feet were repeatedly burnt, the unblemished one paid no attention to this.

सबसे पहले, सुंदरी ने अपने पैर आग में डाले। चूँकि उसके पैर बार-बार जलते थे, इसलिए उस बेदाग ने इस पर कोई ध्यान नहीं दिया।

चरणौ दह्यमानौ च नाचिन्तयदनिन्दिता दुःखं कमलपत्राक्षी महर्षेः प्रियकाम्यया

The unblemished one did not think about her feet being burnt. So as to please the maharṣi, the lotus-eyed one bore this misery. Her face was cheerful.

उस बेदाग को अपने पैर जलने का ख़्याल नहीं आया. महर्षि को प्रसन्न करने के लिए, कमल-नेत्र ने इस दुःख को सहन किया। उसका चेहरा प्रसन्न था.

अथ तत्कर्म दृष्ट्वास्याः प्रीतस्त्रिभुवनेश्वरः ततः संदर्शयामास कन्यायै रूपमात्मनः

On witnessing her deed, the lord of the three worlds was pleased. He displayed his own self to the maiden.

उसके कार्य को देखकर तीनों लोकों के स्वामी प्रसन्न हुए। उसने युवती के सामने अपना रूप प्रदर्शित किया।

उवाच च सुरश्रेष्ठस्तां कन्यां सुदृढव्रताम् प्रीतोऽस्मि ते शुभे भक्त्या तपसा नियमेन च

The best of the gods spoke these words to the maiden, who was extremely firm in her vows. "O fortunate one! I am pleased with your devotion, austerities and rituals.

देवताओं में श्रेष्ठ ने ये वचन उस कन्या से कहे, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में अत्यंत दृढ़ थी। "हे भाग्यवान! मैं तुम्हारी भक्ति, तपस्या और अनुष्ठान से प्रसन्न हूँ।"

तस्माद्योऽभिमतः कामः स ते संपत्स्यते शुभे देहं त्यक्त्वा महाभागे त्रिदिवे मयि वत्स्यसि

O beautiful one! Everything that you wish for will be obtained. O immensely fortunate one! You will cast aside this body and live with me in heaven.

हे सुंदर! जो कुछ तुम चाहोगे वह सब प्राप्त होगा। हे परम भाग्यशाली! तुम इस शरीर को त्याग दोगे और मेरे साथ स्वर्ग में रहोगे।

इदं च ते तीर्थवरं स्थिरं लोके भविष्यति सर्वपापापहं सुभ्रु नाम्ना बदरपाचनम् विख्यातं त्रिषु लोकेषु ब्रह्मर्षिभिरभिप्लुतम्

This supreme tīrtha will be established in this world. O one with the beautiful brows! It will clean all sins and be known by the name of Badarapācana. It will be famous in the three worlds and will be praised by brahmarṣi-s.

यह परम तीर्थ इस लोक में स्थापित हो जायेगा। हे सुन्दर भौंहों वाले! यह सभी पापों को साफ कर देगा और बदरापाचन के नाम से जाना जाएगा। वह तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध होगा और ब्रह्मर्षियों द्वारा प्रशंसित होगा।

अस्मिन्खलु महाभागे शुभे तीर्थवरे पुरा त्यक्त्वा सप्तर्षयो जग्मुर्हिमवन्तमरुन्धतीम्

O immensely fortunate one! O beautiful one! In ancient times, in this supreme tīrtha, the saptarṣi-s had left Arundhatī and gone to the Himālaya-s.

हे परम भाग्यशाली! हे सुंदर! प्राचीन काल में इस सर्वोच्च तीर्थ में सप्तर्षि अरुंधति को छोड़कर हिमालय चले गये थे।

ततस्ते वै महाभागा गत्वा तत्र सुसंशिताः वृत्त्यर्थं फलमूलानि समाहर्तुं ययुः किल

Those immensely fortunate ones, rigid in their vows, went there to collect fruits and roots for their sustenance.

वे अत्यंत भाग्यशाली लोग, अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ होकर, अपने भरण-पोषण के लिए फल और मूल इकट्ठा करने के लिए वहां गए।

तेषां वृत्त्यर्थिनां तत्र वसतां हिमवद्वने अनावृष्टिरनुप्राप्ता तदा द्वादशवार्षिकी

For the sake of their sustenance, they dwelt in the forests of the Himālaya-s and there was a drought that lasted for twelve years.

अपनी आजीविका के लिए, वे हिमालय के जंगलों में रहने लगे और वहाँ बारह वर्षों तक सूखा पड़ा।

ते कृत्वा चाश्रमं तत्र न्यवसन्त तपस्विनः अरुन्धत्यपि कल्याणी तपोनित्याभवत्तदा

Having constructed a hermitage for themselves, the ascetics dwelt there. The fortunate Arundhatī always performed austerities.

तपस्वियों ने अपने लिए एक आश्रम बनाकर वहां निवास किया। सौभाग्यशाली अरुन्धती सदैव तपस्या करती थीं।

अरुन्धतीं ततो दृष्ट्वा तीव्रं नियममास्थिताम् अथागमत्त्रिनयनः सुप्रीतो वरदस्तदा

On seeing that Arundhatī was observing fierce rituals, the three-eyed one, the granter of boons, the immensely illustrious Mahādeva, was extremely pleased.

यह देखकर कि अरुंधति उग्र अनुष्ठान कर रही थी, तीन नेत्रों वाले, वरदान देने वाले, अत्यंत तेजस्वी महादेव अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए।

ब्राह्मं रूपं ततः कृत्वा महादेवो महायशाः तामभ्येत्याब्रवीद्देवो भिक्षामिच्छाम्यहं शुभे

Assuming the form of a brāhmaṇa, he arrived there. The god approached her and said, "O fortunate one! I am looking for alms."

वह ब्राह्मण का रूप धारण करके वहां पहुंचा। भगवान उसके पास आये और बोले, "हे भाग्यशाली! मैं भिक्षा की तलाश में हूं।"

प्रत्युवाच ततः सा तं ब्राह्मणं चारुदर्शना क्षीणोऽन्नसंचयो विप्र बदराणीह भक्षय ततोऽब्रवीन्महादेवः पचस्वैतानि सुव्रते

The beautiful one replied to the brāhmaṇa, "O brāhmaṇa! Our store of food has been exhausted. Eat these berries." Mahādeva said, "O one who is good in vows! Cook these berries."

सुंदरी ने ब्राह्मण को उत्तर दिया, "हे ब्राह्मण! हमारा भोजन भंडार समाप्त हो गया है। ये जामुन खाओ।" महादेव ने कहा, "हे व्रत करने वाले! इन जामुनों को पकाओ।"

इत्युक्ता सापचत्तानि ब्राह्मणप्रियकाम्यया अधिश्रित्य समिद्धेऽग्नौ बदराणि यशस्विनी

Having been thus addressed, wishing to please the brāhmaṇa, she began to cook those berries. The illustrious one offered kindling in the fire and placed the berries on that.

इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, ब्राह्मण को प्रसन्न करने की इच्छा से, वह उन जामुनों को पकाने लगी। उस महापुरुष ने अग्नि में अग्नि प्रज्वलित की और उस पर जामुन रख दिये।

दिव्या मनोरमाः पुण्याः कथाः शुश्राव सा तदा अतीता सा त्वनावृष्टिर्घोरा द्वादशवार्षिकी

She listened to divine, beautiful and sacred accounts. Those twelve years of terrible drought passed.

वह दिव्य, सुन्दर एवं पवित्र वृत्तान्त सुनती थी। भयंकर सूखे के वे बारह वर्ष बीत गये।

अनश्नन्त्याः पचन्त्याश्च शृण्वन्त्याश्च कथाः शुभाः अहःसमः स तस्यास्तु कालोऽतीतः सुदारुणः

She was without food and was cooking, listening to those auspicious accounts. That extremely terrible period passed, as if it was a single day.

वह निराहार थी और भोजन पकाते हुए उन मंगल वृत्तान्तों को सुन रही थी। वह अत्यंत भयानक काल ऐसे बीत गया, मानो एक ही दिन हो।

ततस्ते मुनयः प्राप्ताः फलान्यादाय पर्वतात् ततः स भगवान्प्रीतः प्रोवाचारुन्धतीं तदा

Having obtained fruits, the sages returned from the mountain. The illustrious one was pleased with Arundhatī and spoke to her.

फल प्राप्त करके ऋषि पर्वत से लौट आये। वह महापुरुष अरुंधति से प्रसन्न हुए और उनसे बोले।

उपसर्पस्व धर्मज्ञे यथापूर्वमिमानृषीन् प्रीतोऽस्मि तव धर्मज्ञे तपसा नियमेन च

"O one who knows about dharma! Approach the riṣi-s, as you used to do earlier. O one who knows about dharma! I am pleased with your austerities and your rituals."

"हे धर्म को जानने वाले! ऋषियों के पास जाओ, जैसे तुम पहले करते थे। हे धर्म को जानने वाले! मैं तुम्हारी तपस्या और तुम्हारे अनुष्ठानों से प्रसन्न हूं।"

ततः संदर्शयामास स्वरूपं भगवान्हरः ततोऽब्रवीत्तदा तेभ्यस्तस्यास्तच्चरितं महत्

The illustrious Hara then showed himself in his own form. He spoke to them about the greatness of her conduct.

तब वैभवशाली हारा ने स्वयं को अपने रूप में प्रकट किया। उसने उनसे उसके आचरण की महानता के बारे में बात की।

भवद्भिर्हिमवत्पृष्ठे यत्तपः समुपार्जितम् अस्याश्च यत्तपो विप्रा न समं तन्मतं मम

"You have earned merit from the austerities you have performed on the slopes of the Himālaya-s. O brāhmana-s! But it is my view that what she has earned through her austerities is equal to that.

"आपने हिमालय की ढलान पर की गई तपस्या से पुण्य अर्जित किया है। हे ब्राह्मण! लेकिन मेरा विचार है कि उसने अपनी तपस्या से जो अर्जित किया है, वह उसके बराबर है।

अनया हि तपस्विन्या तपस्तप्तं सुदुश्चरम् अनश्नन्त्या पचन्त्या च समा द्वादश पारिताः

This ascetic has tormented herself through extremely difficult austerities. While fasting, she has spent twelve years in cooking."

इस तपस्विनी ने अत्यंत कठिन तपस्या करके स्वयं को कष्ट पहुंचाया है। उपवास करते हुए, उसने खाना पकाने में बारह साल बिताए हैं।"

ततः प्रोवाच भगवांस्तामेवारुन्धतीं पुनः वरं वृणीष्व कल्याणि यत्तेऽभिलषितं हृदि

The illustrious one then spoke to Arundhatī again. "O fortunate one! Ask for the boon that is in your heart."

उस महान् ने फिर अरुंधति से बात की। "हे भाग्यवान! जो वरदान तेरे हृदय में हो वही मांग ले।"

साब्रवीत्पृथुताम्राक्षी देवं सप्तर्षिसंसदि भगवान्यदि मे प्रीतस्तीर्थं स्यादिदमुत्तमम् सिद्धदेवर्षिदयितं नाम्ना बदरपाचनम्

In the presence of the saptarṣi-s, the one with the large and coppery eyes addressed the god. "O illustrious one! If you are pleased with me, let this spot become an excellent tīrtha. Let it be loved by the siddha-s and the devarṣi-s and let it be known by the name of Badarapācana.

सप्तर्षियों की उपस्थिति में, बड़ी और तांबे जैसी आँखों वाले व्यक्ति ने भगवान को संबोधित किया। "हे महामहिम! यदि आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हैं, तो यह स्थान एक उत्कृष्ट तीर्थ बन जाए। इसे सिद्धों और देवर्षियों द्वारा प्रिय बनाया जाए और इसे बदरापाचन के नाम से जाना जाए।"

तथास्मिन्देवदेवेश त्रिरात्रमुषितः शुचिः प्राप्नुयादुपवासेन फलं द्वादशवार्षिकम् एवमस्त्विति तां चोक्त्वा हरो यातस्तदा दिवम्

O god! O lord of the gods! If a person purifies himself and fasts here for three days, let him obtain the fruits that are obtained from fasting for twelve years."

रब्बा बे! हे देवताओं के स्वामी! यदि कोई व्यक्ति स्वयं को शुद्ध करके तीन दिन तक यहां उपवास करता है, तो उसे बारह वर्ष तक उपवास करने का फल प्राप्त हो।"

ऋषयो विस्मयं जग्मुस्तां दृष्ट्वा चाप्यरुन्धतीम् अश्रान्तां चाविवर्णां च क्षुत्पिपासासहां सतीम्

On seeing this, and on seeing the virtuous Arundhatī, who was capable of withstanding hunger and thirst and was yet not exhausted or pale, the riṣi-s were astounded.

यह देखकर, और पुण्यात्मा अरुंधति को देखकर, जो भूख और प्यास को सहन करने में सक्षम थी और अभी भी थकी या पीली नहीं थी, ऋषि-लोग आश्चर्यचकित हो गए।

एवं सिद्धिः परा प्राप्ता अरुन्धत्या विशुद्धया यथा त्वया महाभागे मदर्थं संशितव्रते

Thus did the pure Arundhatī attain supreme success. O immensely fortunate one! O one who is good in vows! You have done the same for my sake.

इस प्रकार शुद्ध अरुंधति को परम सफलता प्राप्त हुई। हे परम भाग्यशाली! हे मन्नतों में निपुण! तुमने मेरे लिये वैसा ही किया है।

विशेषो हि त्वया भद्रे व्रते ह्यस्मिन्समर्पितः तथा चेदं ददाम्यद्य नियमेन सुतोषितः

O fortunate one! Your vows have been dedicated to me. Therefore, pleased with your observance of rules, I will grant you this special boon today.

हे भाग्यवान! तुम्हारे व्रत मुझे समर्पित हो गये हैं। अत: तुम्हारे नियमों के पालन से प्रसन्न होकर मैं आज तुम्हें यह विशेष वरदान दूँगा।

विशेषं तव कल्याणि प्रयच्छामि वरं वरे अरुन्धत्या वरस्तस्या यो दत्तो वै महात्मना

O fortunate one! Ask for a special and supreme boon, which is superior to the boon granted to Arundhatī by the great-souled one.

हे भाग्यवान! एक विशेष और सर्वोच्च वरदान मांगो, जो उस महान आत्मा द्वारा अरुंधति को दिए गए वरदान से बेहतर हो।

तस्य चाहं प्रसादेन तव कल्याणि तेजसा प्रवक्ष्याम्यपरं भूयो वरमत्र यथाविधि

Through his favours and because of your energy, in accordance with the prescribed rites, I will grant you another boon.

उनके उपकार से और तुम्हारी शक्ति के कारण, विधिपूर्वक, मैं तुम्हें एक और वरदान दूँगा।

यस्त्वेकां रजनीं तीर्थे वत्स्यते सुसमाहितः स स्नात्वा प्राप्स्यते लोकान्देहन्यासाच्च दुर्लभान्

Whoever controls himself and spends a night in this tīrtha and bathes here, will, after casting aside his body, obtain worlds that are extremely difficult to get."

जो कोई भी अपने आप पर नियंत्रण रखता है और इस तीर्थ में एक रात बिताता है और यहां स्नान करता है, वह अपने शरीर को त्यागने के बाद ऐसे लोकों को प्राप्त करेगा जिन्हें प्राप्त करना अत्यंत कठिन है।"

इत्युक्त्वा भगवान्देवः सहस्राक्षः प्रतापवान् स्रुचावतीं ततः पुण्यां जगाम त्रिदिवं पुनः

Having spoken to Sruchavati, the thousand-eyed god, the illustrious and powerful one, returned again to heaven.

श्रुचावती से बात करने के बाद, हजार आंखों वाले, शानदार और शक्तिशाली देवता, फिर से स्वर्ग लौट आए।

गते वज्रधरे राजंस्तत्र वर्षं पपात ह पुष्पाणां भरतश्रेष्ठ दिव्यानां दिव्यगन्धिनाम्

O king! O foremost among the Bhārata lienage! When the wielder of the vajra had left, celestial flowers, with divine fragrances, showered down there.

हे राजा! हे भरत वंश में अग्रणी! जब वज्रधारी चला गया, तो दिव्य सुगंध वाले दिव्य पुष्प वहां बरसने लगे।

नेदुर्दुन्दुभयश्चापि समन्तात्सुमहास्वनाः मारुतश्च ववौ युक्त्या पुण्यगन्धो विशां पते

In every direction, drums sounded with a loud roar. O lord of the earth! A breeze, laced with auspicious scents, began to blow.

हर दिशा में बड़े जोर की गर्जना के साथ नगाड़े बजने लगे। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! शुभ सुगंध से युक्त वायु चलने लगी।

उत्सृज्य तु शुभं देहं जगामेन्द्रस्य भार्यताम् तपसोग्रेण सा लब्ध्वा तेन रेमे सहाच्युत

Having cast aside her body, the sacred one became Indra's wife. She obtained him through her fierce austerities and pleasured with the undecaying one."

अपने शरीर को त्यागकर, पवित्र इंद्र की पत्नी बन गई। उसने अपनी घोर तपस्या से उसे प्राप्त किया और उस अक्षय से प्रसन्न हुई।"

जनमेजय उवाच का तस्या भगवन्माता क्व संवृद्धा च शोभना श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं ब्रह्मन्परं कौतूहलं हि मे

Janamejaya asked: Who was the illustrious mother of that beautiful one? How was she reared? O brāhmaṇa! I wish to hear this. My curiousity is supreme.

जनमेजय ने पूछा: उस सुन्दरी की यशस्वी माता कौन थी? उसका पालन-पोषण कैसे हुआ? हे ब्राह्मण! मैं यह सुनना चाहता हूं. मेरी जिज्ञासा सर्वोच्च है.

वैशंपायन उवाच भारद्वाजस्य विप्रर्षेः स्कन्नं रेतो महात्मनः दृष्ट्वाप्सरसमायान्तीं घृताचीं पृथुलोचनाम्

Vaiśampāyana replied: On seeing the large-eyed āpsara Gritachi, the seed of the great-souled brāhmaṇa riṣi, Bhāradvāja, fell.

वैशम्पायन ने उत्तर दिया: बड़ी आंखों वाली अप्सरा ग्रिताची को देखकर, महान आत्मा वाले ब्राह्मण ऋषि, भारद्वाज का बीज गिर गया।

स तु जग्राह तद्रेतः करेण जपतां वरः तदावपत्पर्णपुटे तत्र सा संभवच्छुभा

The one who was supreme among those who meditate, picked that seed up in his hand. It was kept in a cup made of leaves and the beautiful one was born from this.

जो ध्यान करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ था, उसने उस बीज को अपने हाथ में उठा लिया। इसे पत्तों से बने प्याले में रखा गया और इससे सुंदर का जन्म हुआ।

तस्यास्तु जातकर्मादि कृत्वा सर्वं तपोधनः नाम चास्याः स कृतवान्भारद्वाजो महामुनिः

All her birth rites were performed by the one who was rich in austerities. The great sage, Bhāradvāja, also named her.

उनके सभी जन्म संस्कार एक तपस्वी व्यक्ति द्वारा किये गये थे। महान ऋषि भारद्वाज ने उनका नाम भी रखा।

स्रुचावतीति धर्मात्मा तदर्षिगणसंसदि स च तामाश्रमे न्यस्य जगाम हिमवद्वनम्

In the presence of a large number of riṣi-s, the great-souled one gave her the name of Sruchavati. Leaving her in that hermitage, he returned to the slopes of the Himālaya-s.

बड़ी संख्या में ऋषियों की उपस्थिति में, महान आत्मा ने उसे श्रुचवती का नाम दिया। उसे उस आश्रम में छोड़कर, वह हिमालय की ढलान पर लौट आया।

तत्राप्युपस्पृश्य महानुभावो; वसूनि दत्त्वा च महाद्विजेभ्यः जगाम तीर्थं सुसमाहितात्मा; शक्रस्य वृष्णिप्रवरस्तदानीम्

The immensely generous one bathed there and gave away riches to the great brāhmana-s. Extremely controlled in his soul, the foremost of the Vṛṣṇi lineage then went to Śākra's tritha.

अत्यंत उदार व्यक्ति ने वहां स्नान किया और महान ब्राह्मणों को धन दान किया। अपनी आत्मा में अत्यधिक नियंत्रित, वृष्णि वंश का सबसे प्रमुख तब शक्र के त्रिथा में गया।
