धृतराष्ट्र उवाच तथा प्रयाते शिबिरं द्रोणपुत्रे महारथे कच्चित्कृपश्च भोजश्च भयार्तौ न न्यवर्तताम्

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: When Droṇa's mahāratha son headed towards the camp, were Kṛpa and Bhojā frightened? Did they retreat?

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: जब द्रोण के महारथ पुत्र शिविर की ओर बढ़े, तो क्या कृपा और भोज भयभीत थे? क्या वे पीछे हट गये?

कच्चिन्न वारितौ क्षुद्रै रक्षिभिर्नोपलक्षितौ असह्यमिति वा मत्वा न निवृत्तौ महारथौ

Were they restrained by the inferior guards and did they run away? Did those mahāratha-s think that they were irresistible and refrain?

क्या उन्हें अवर गार्डों ने रोका था और क्या वे भाग गए थे? क्या उन महारथियों ने सोचा कि वे अप्रतिरोध्य हैं और परहेज़ करते हैं?

कच्चित्प्रमथ्य शिबिरं हत्वा सोमकपाण्डवान् दुर्योधनस्य पदवीं गतौ परमिकां रणे

Or did they crush the camp and kill the Somaka-s and the Pāṇḍava-s? Did they follow Duryodhana's supreme footsteps in the encounter?

या क्या उन्होंने शिविर को कुचल दिया और सोमकों और पांडवों को मार डाला? क्या उन्होंने मुठभेड़ में दुर्योधन के सर्वोच्च पदचिन्हों का अनुसरण किया?

पाञ्चालैर्वा विनिहतौ कच्चिन्नास्वपतां क्षितौ कच्चित्ताभ्यां कृतं कर्म तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय

Were they slain by the Pāñcāla-s and did they lie down on the ground? What tasks did those two accomplish? O Sañjaya! Tell me that.

क्या वे पंचालों द्वारा मारे गये थे और क्या वे भूमि पर लेट गये थे? उन दोनों ने कौन से कार्य पूरे किये? हे संजय! मुझे वह बताओ.

संजय उवाच तस्मिन्प्रयाते शिबिरं द्रोणपुत्रे महात्मनि कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च शिबिरद्वार्यतिष्ठताम्

Sañjaya replied: Droṇa's great-souled son headed towards the camp and Kṛpa and Kritavarma stationed themselves at the gate of the camp.

संजय ने उत्तर दिया: द्रोण का महाबली पुत्र शिविर की ओर चला गया और कृप और कृतवर्मा शिविर के द्वार पर खड़े हो गए।

अश्वत्थामा तु तौ दृष्ट्वा यत्नवन्तौ महारथौ प्रहृष्टः शनकै राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत्

O king! On seeing that those two mahāratha-s were ready to make efforts, Aśvatthāma was delighted and softly spoke these words.

हे राजा! यह देखकर कि वे दोनों महारथी प्रयास करने के लिए तैयार थे, अश्वत्थामा प्रसन्न हुआ और उसने धीरे से ये शब्द बोले।

यत्तौ भवन्तौ पर्याप्तौ सर्वक्षत्रस्य नाशने किं पुनर्योधशेषस्य प्रसुप्तस्य विशेषतः

"If the two of you try, you are sufficient to destroy all the kṣatriya-s, not to speak of the remaining warriors, especially when they are asleep.

"यदि आप दोनों प्रयास करें, तो आप सभी क्षत्रियों को नष्ट करने के लिए पर्याप्त हैं, शेष योद्धाओं की तो बात ही छोड़ दें, खासकर जब वे सो रहे हों।

अहं प्रवेक्ष्ये शिबिरं चरिष्यामि च कालवत् यथा न कश्चिदपि मे जीवन्मुच्येत मानवः

I will penetrate the camp and roam around like Death, so that not a single man escapes from me with his life."

मैं छावनी में घुसकर मृत्यु के समान घूमूंगा, ऐसा न हो कि एक भी मनुष्य अपना प्राण लेकर मुझ से बच निकले।”

इत्युक्त्वा प्राविशद्द्रौणिः पार्थानां शिबिरं महत् अद्वारेणाभ्यवस्कन्द्य विहाय भयमात्मनः

Having said this, Droṇa's son penetrated the large camp of the Pārtha-s. Casting aside all fear, he entered through a spot where there was no gate.

इतना कहकर द्रोणपुत्र पार्थों की विशाल छावनी में घुस गये। सारे डर को परे रखकर वह ऐसी जगह से दाखिल हुआ, जहां कोई दरवाज़ा नहीं था।

स प्रविश्य महाबाहुरुद्देशज्ञश्च तस्य ह धृष्टद्युम्नस्य निलयं शनकैरभ्युपागमत्

The mighty-armed one knew the spot and entered. He quietly approached Dhṛṣṭadyumna's abode.

महाबाहु ने स्थान जान लिया और प्रवेश कर गया। वह चुपचाप धृष्टद्युम्न के निवास पर पहुंच गया।

ते तु कृत्वा महत्कर्म श्रान्ताश्च बलवद्रणे प्रसुप्ता वै सुविश्वस्ताः स्वसैन्यपरिवारिताः

Having performed great deeds in the battle, they were extremely exhausted and slept at ease, surrounded by their own soldiers.

युद्ध में महान कार्य करने के बाद, वे अत्यधिक थक गए थे और अपने सैनिकों से घिरे हुए, आराम से सो रहे थे।

अथ प्रविश्य तद्वेश्म धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भारत पाञ्चाल्यं शयने द्रौणिरपश्यत्सुप्तमन्तिकात्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! He entered Dhṛṣṭadyumna's abode. Droṇa's son saw that Pāñcāla was lying down, as if he was dead.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने धृष्टद्युम्न के निवास में प्रवेश किया। द्रोण के पुत्र ने देखा कि पंचाल लेटा हुआ था, मानो वह मर गया हो।

क्षौमावदाते महति स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृते माल्यप्रवरसंयुक्ते धूपैश्चूर्णैश्च वासिते

He was on a large and excellent bed, covered by an expensive and silken sheet. This was covered with excellent garlands and was fragrant with the aroma of incense.

वह एक बड़े और उत्कृष्ट बिस्तर पर था, जो एक महंगी और रेशमी चादर से ढका हुआ था। यह उत्तम मालाओं से आच्छादित था और धूप की सुगंध से सुगंधित था।

तं शयानं महात्मानं विस्रब्धमकुतोभयम् प्राबोधयत पादेन शयनस्थं महीपते

The great-souled one was calmly sleeping, devoid of any fear. O lord of the earth! He awoke the sleeping one with a kick of his foot.

वह महात्मा बिना किसी भय के शांति से सो रहा था। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उसने सोए हुए को पैर मारकर जगाया।

स बुद्ध्वा चरणस्पर्शमुत्थाय रणदुर्मदः अभ्यजानदमेयात्मा द्रोणपुत्रं महारथम्

With the touch of the foot, the one who was indomitable in battle awoke. The one with an immeasurable soul recognized Droṇa's mahāratha son.

चरण स्पर्श से वह जाग उठा, जो युद्ध में अदम्य था। अथाह आत्मा वाले व्यक्ति ने द्रोण के महारथी पुत्र को पहचान लिया।

तमुत्पतन्तं शयनादश्वत्थामा महाबलः केशेष्वालम्ब्य पाणिभ्यां निष्पिपेष महीतले

As he was rising from his bed, the immensely strong Aśvatthāma seized him by his hair and pressed him down on the ground with his hands.

जैसे ही वह अपने बिस्तर से उठ रहा था, अत्यंत शक्तिशाली अश्वत्थामा ने उसके बालों को पकड़ लिया और उसे अपने हाथों से जमीन पर दबा दिया।

स बलात्तेन निष्पिष्टः साध्वसेन च भारत निद्रया चैव पाञ्चाल्यो नाशकच्चेष्टितुं तदा

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! He was crushed down with great force. Because of consternation and sleep, Pāñcāla was unable to resist then.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उसे बड़ी ताकत से कुचल दिया गया. घबराहट और नींद के कारण, पंचाल तब विरोध करने में असमर्थ था।

तमाक्रम्य तदा राजन्कण्ठे चोरसि चोभयोः नदन्तं विस्फुरन्तं च पशुमारममारयत्

O king! He pressed him down on his throat and his chest with both his feet. Though he roared and writhed, he was about to kill him like an animal.

हे राजा! उसने अपने दोनों पैरों से उसके गले और छाती को दबाया। हालाँकि वह दहाड़ता और छटपटाता था, फिर भी वह उसे एक जानवर की तरह मारने वाला था।

तुदन्नखैस्तु स द्रौणिं नातिव्यक्तमुदाहरत् आचार्यपुत्र शस्त्रेण जहि मा मा चिरं कृथाः त्वत्कृते सुकृताँल्लोकान्गच्छेयं द्विपदां वर

He tore at Droṇa's son with his nails and gently said, "O son of the preceptor! Slay me with your weapon. Do not delay. O best among men! By doing this, let me go the worlds of the virtuous."

उसने द्रोण के पुत्र को अपने नाखूनों से फाड़ दिया और धीरे से कहा, "हे गुरु के पुत्र! मुझे अपने हथियार से मार डालो। देरी मत करो। हे पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ! ऐसा करके, मुझे पुण्य लोगों की दुनिया में जाने दो।"

तस्याव्यक्तां तु तां वाचं संश्रुत्य द्रौणिरब्रवीत् आचार्यघातिनां लोका न सन्ति कुलपांसन तस्माच्छस्त्रेण निधनं न त्वमर्हसि दुर्मते

Having heard the words that he had spoken, Droṇa's son replied, "O worst of your lineage! There is no world for those who slay their preceptor. O evil-minded one! You do not deserve to be killed by any weapon."

उनके द्वारा कहे गए शब्दों को सुनकर, द्रोण के पुत्र ने उत्तर दिया, "हे तुम्हारे वंश के सबसे बुरे! जो लोग अपने गुरु को मारते हैं, उनके लिए कोई दुनिया नहीं है। हे दुष्ट मन! तुम किसी भी हथियार से मारे जाने के लायक नहीं हो।"

एवं ब्रुवाणस्तं वीरं सिंहो मत्तमिव द्विपम् मर्मस्वभ्यवधीत्क्रुद्धः पादाष्ठीलैः सुदारुणैः

Having spoken thus, like a lion against an elephant, he angrily struck the brave one in his inner organs with extremely fierce kicks of his feet.

ऐसा कहकर उसने हाथी पर सिंह की भाँति क्रोधपूर्वक अपने पैरों की अत्यंत भयंकर लातों से उस वीर के आंतरिक अंगों पर प्रहार किया।

तस्य वीरस्य शब्देन मार्यमाणस्य वेश्मनि अबुध्यन्त महाराज स्त्रियो ये चास्य रक्षिणः

O great king! As he was being killed in that abode, the brave one's cries woke up the women and the guards.

हे महान राजा! जब वह उस निवास में मारा जा रहा था, तो बहादुर की चीख ने महिलाओं और गार्डों को जगा दिया।

ते दृष्ट्वा वर्ष्मवन्तं तमतिमानुषविक्रमम् भूतमेव व्यवस्यन्तो न स्म प्रव्याहरन्भयात्

They saw that his body was being crushed by someone with superhuman valour and took that being to be a demon. Therefore, out of fear, they did not raise an alarm.

उन्होंने देखा कि उसके शरीर को कोई अतिमानवीय पराक्रम वाला व्यक्ति कुचल रहा है और उन्हें लगा कि यह कोई राक्षस है। इसलिए डर के मारे उन्होंने शोर नहीं मचाया.

तं तु तेनाभ्युपायेन गमयित्वा यमक्षयम् अध्यतिष्ठत्स तेजस्वी रथं प्राप्य सुदर्शनम्

Having dispatched him to Yāma's eternal abode, the energetic one approached his extremely handsome chariot and ascended it.

उसे यम के शाश्वत निवास में भेजने के बाद, ऊर्जावान उसके अत्यंत सुंदर रथ के पास आया और उस पर चढ़ गया।

स तस्य भवनाद्राजन्निष्क्रम्यानादयन्दिशः रथेन शिबिरं प्रायाज्जिघांसुर्द्विषतो बली

O king! He emerged from that abode and made the directions resound. The powerful one left for other parts of the camp on the chariot, wishing to kill the enemy.

हे राजा! वे उस निवास से निकले और दिशाओं को गुंजायमान कर दिया। शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति शत्रु को मारने की इच्छा से रथ पर सवार होकर शिविर के अन्य भागों के लिए रवाना हो गया।

अपक्रान्ते ततस्तस्मिन्द्रोणपुत्रे महारथे सह तै रक्षिभिः सर्वैः प्रणेदुर्योषितस्तदा

When Droṇa's mahāratha son had left, all the women and the guards let out cries of lamentation.

जब द्रोण का महारथी पुत्र चला गया, तो सभी स्त्रियाँ और रक्षक विलाप करने लगे।

राजानं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भृशं शोकपरायणाः व्याक्रोशन्क्षत्रियाः सर्वे धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भारत

On seeing that the king, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, had been killed, they were overcome with great sorrow.

यह देखकर कि राजा धृष्टद्युम्न मारा गया, वे बड़े दुःख से अभिभूत हो गये।

तासां तु तेन शब्देन समीपे क्षत्रियर्षभाः क्षिप्रं च समनह्यन्त किमेतदिति चाब्रुवन्

On hearing their shrieks, all the kṣatriya-s awoke. The bulls among kṣatriya-s swiftly approached and asked, "What has happened? Tell us."

उनकी चीख सुनकर सभी क्षत्रिय जाग गये। क्षत्रियों के बीच बैल तेजी से पास आए और पूछा, "क्या हुआ है? हमें बताओ।"

स्त्रियस्तु राजन्वित्रस्ता भारद्वाजं निरीक्ष्य तम् अब्रुवन्दीनकण्ठेन क्षिप्रमाद्रवतेति वै

O king! The women had been terrified at the sight of Bhāradvāja's descendant. In distressed voices that choked with tears, they said,

हे राजा! भारद्वाज के वंशज को देखकर महिलाएँ भयभीत हो गई थीं। आंसुओं से भरी व्यथित आवाज में उन्होंने कहा,

राक्षसो वा मनुष्यो वा नैनं जानीमहे वयम् हत्वा पाञ्चालराजं यो रथमारुह्य तिष्ठति

"Swiftly follow him. We do not know whether it was a rākṣasa or a human. He has killed the king of Pāñcāla and is now stationed on his chariot."

"तेजी से उसका पीछा करो। हम नहीं जानते कि वह राक्षस था या इंसान। उसने पंचाल के राजा को मार डाला है और अब वह अपने रथ पर बैठा है।"

ततस्ते योधमुख्यास्तं सहसा पर्यवारयन् स तानापततः सर्वान्रुद्रास्त्रेण व्यपोथयत्

At this, the foremost among warriors violently surrounded him. On seeing that they were descending on him, he uprooted all of them with rudrāstra.

इस पर योद्धाओं में अग्रगण्य वीरों ने हिंसक होकर उसे घेर लिया। यह देखकर कि वे उसके ऊपर आ रहे हैं, उसने उन सभी को रुद्रास्त्र से उखाड़ दिया।

धृष्टद्युम्नं च हत्वा स तांश्चैवास्य पदानुगान् अपश्यच्छयने सुप्तमुत्तमौजसमन्तिके

Having slain Dhṛṣṭadyumna and all his followers, he saw that Uttamouja was sleeping nearby, on his bed.

धृष्टद्युम्न और उसके सभी अनुयायियों को मारने के बाद, उन्होंने देखा कि उत्तमौजा पास ही अपने बिस्तर पर सो रहे थे।

तमप्याक्रम्य पादेन कण्ठे चोरसि चौजसा तथैव मारयामास विनर्दन्तमरिंदमम्

He attacked him and forcefully pressed down on his throat and his chest with his feet. He thus killed that scorcher of enemies, while he was shrieking.

उसने उस पर हमला किया और अपने पैरों से उसके गले और छाती को जबरदस्ती दबाया। इस प्रकार उसने शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले उस शत्रु को चिल्लाते हुए ही मार डाला।

युधामन्युस्तु संप्राप्तो मत्त्वा तं रक्षसा हतम् गदामुद्यम्य वेगेन हृदि द्रौणिमताडयत्

Thinking that he had been killed by a rākṣasa, Yudhāmanyu approached. He raised a club and powerfully struck Droṇa's son in the chest.

यह सोचकर कि उसे एक राक्षस ने मार डाला है, युधामन्यु उसके पास आया। उसने एक गदा उठायी और द्रोण के पुत्र की छाती में जोरदार प्रहार किया।

तमभिद्रुत्य जग्राह क्षितौ चैनमपातयत् विस्फुरन्तं च पशुवत्तथैवैनममारयत्

However, he rushed towards him, and seizing him, flung him down on the ground. As he writhed, he slew him like an animal.

हालाँकि, वह उसकी ओर दौड़ा और उसे पकड़कर ज़मीन पर पटक दिया। जैसे ही वह छटपटाया, उसने उसे एक जानवर की तरह मार डाला।

तथा स वीरो हत्वा तं ततोऽन्यान्समुपाद्रवत् संसुप्तानेव राजेन्द्र तत्र तत्र महारथान् स्फुरतो वेपमानांश्च शमितेव पशून्मखे

Having slain that brave one, he attacked the others. O Indra among kings! Wherever those mahāratha-s slept, quivered, trembled and strove, he killed them like animals at a sacrifice.

उस वीर को मारकर उसने दूसरों पर आक्रमण कर दिया। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! वे महारथी जहाँ भी सोते, काँपते, काँपते और व्याकुल होते, उन्होंने उन्हें यज्ञ में पशुओं की भाँति मार डाला।

ततो निस्त्रिंशमादाय जघानान्यान्पृथग्जनान् भागशो विचरन्मार्गानसियुद्धविशारदः

He grasped his sword and separately killed many others. Skilled in fighting with the sword, he roamed along different paths in various parts of the camp.

उसने अपनी तलवार पकड़ ली और कई अन्य लोगों को अलग-अलग मार डाला। तलवार से लड़ने में कुशल, वह शिविर के विभिन्न हिस्सों में अलग-अलग रास्तों पर घूमता रहा।

तथैव गुल्मे संप्रेक्ष्य शयानान्मध्यगौल्मिकान् श्रान्तान्न्यस्तायुधान्सर्वान्क्षणेनैव व्यपोथयत्

He saw army divisions and killed those who were sleeping in the midst of those divisions. They were exhausted and had cast aside their weapons. He uprooted all of them in a short instant.

उसने सेना की टुकड़ियों को देखा और उन टुकड़ियों के बीच में सो रहे लोगों को मार डाला। वे थक गये थे और उन्होंने अपने हथियार एक तरफ रख दिये थे। उसने कुछ ही क्षण में उन सबको उखाड़ फेंका।

योधानश्वान्द्विपांश्चैव प्राच्छिनत्स वरासिना रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गः कालसृष्ट इवान्तकः

With that supreme sword, he brought down warriors, horses and elephants. All his limbs were covered with blood and he was like Death, created by Destiny.

उस सर्वोच्च तलवार से उसने योद्धाओं, घोड़ों और हाथियों को मार गिराया। उसके सभी अंग रक्त से लथपथ थे और वह नियति द्वारा निर्मित मृत्यु के समान था।

विस्फुरद्भिश्च तैर्द्रौणिर्निस्त्रिंशस्योद्यमेन च आक्षेपेण तथैवासेस्त्रिधा रक्तोक्षितोऽभवत्

Droṇa's son raised his sword and made them tremble. He struck them with three different motions of the sword and was covered in blood.

द्रोण के पुत्र ने अपनी तलवार उठायी और उन्हें कम्पित कर दिया। उसने उन पर तलवार से तीन अलग-अलग वार किए और वे खून से लथपथ हो गए।

तस्य लोहितसिक्तस्य दीप्तखड्गस्य युध्यतः अमानुष इवाकारो बभौ परमभीषणः

He was covered in red and fought with that blazing sword. His form was superhuman and he was resplendent and extremely terrible.

वह लाल रंग से ढका हुआ था और उस धधकती तलवार से युद्ध कर रहा था। उनका स्वरूप अलौकिक तथा देदीप्यमान एवं अत्यंत भयानक था।

ये त्वजाग्रत कौरव्य तेऽपि शब्देन मोहिताः निरीक्ष्यमाणा अन्योन्यं द्रौणिं दृष्ट्वा प्रविव्यथुः

O Kauravya! Those who were awakened were confused by the noise. On seeing Droṇa's son, they were distressed and glanced towards each other.

हे कौरव्य! जो लोग जाग गए वे शोर से भ्रमित हो गए। द्रोण के पुत्र को देखकर वे व्यथित हो गये और एक-दूसरे की ओर देखने लगे।

तद्रूपं तस्य ते दृष्ट्वा क्षत्रियाः शत्रुकर्शनाः राक्षसं मन्यमानास्तं नयनानि न्यमीलयन्

On beholding his form, the kṣatriya-s, the destroyers of enemies, thought that he was a rākṣasa and closed their eyes.

उसके रूप को देखकर शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले क्षत्रियों ने सोचा कि वह राक्षस है और उन्होंने अपनी आँखें बंद कर लीं।

स घोररूपो व्यचरत्कालवच्छिबिरे ततः अपश्यद्द्रौपदीपुत्रानवशिष्टांश्च सोमकान्

Assuming a terrible form like Yāma, he roamed around in that camp. He saw Draupadī's sons and the remaining Somaka-s.

वह यम के समान भयंकर रूप धारण करके उस शिविर में घूमता रहा। उन्होंने द्रौपदी के पुत्रों और शेष सोमकों को देखा।

तेन शब्देन वित्रस्ता धनुर्हस्ता महारथाः धृष्टद्युम्नं हतं श्रुत्वा द्रौपदेया विशां पते अवाकिरञ्शरव्रातैर्भारद्वाजमभीतवत्

O lord of the earth! Frightened by the noise and hearing that Dhṛṣṭadyumna had been killed, Draupadī's mahāratha sons grasped bows in their hands. Without any fear, they countered Bhāradvāja's son with storms of arrows.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! शोर से भयभीत होकर और यह सुनकर कि धृष्टद्युम्न मारा गया, द्रौपदी के महारथ पुत्रों ने अपने हाथों में धनुष ले लिये। बिना किसी डर के, उन्होंने बाणों की बौछार से भारद्वाज के पुत्र का मुकाबला किया।

ततस्तेन निनादेन संप्रबुद्धाः प्रभद्रकाः शिलीमुखैः शिखण्डी च द्रोणपुत्रं समार्दयन्

The Prabhadraka-s awoke. With loud roars, they and Śikhaṇḍī struck Droṇa's son with arrows that possessed stone heads.

प्रभद्रक जाग उठे। उन्होंने और शिखंडी ने बड़े जोर से गर्जना करते हुए पत्थर के सिर वाले बाणों से द्रोणपुत्र को घायल कर दिया।

भारद्वाजस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा शरवर्षाणि वर्षतः ननाद बलवन्नादं जिघांसुस्तान्सुदुर्जयान्

On seeing that they were raining down showers of arrows, Bhāradvāja's descendant roared powerfully and wished to kill the ones who were extremely difficult to defeat.

यह देखकर कि वे बाणों की वर्षा कर रहे थे, भारद्वाज के वंशज ने शक्तिशाली गर्जना की और उन लोगों को मारने की कामना की जिन्हें हराना बेहद मुश्किल था।

ततः परमसंक्रुद्धः पितुर्वधमनुस्मरन् अवरुह्य रथोपस्थात्त्वरमाणोऽभिदुद्रुवे

Remembering the death of his father, he became extremely angry. He swiftly descended from his chariot and rushed against them.

अपने पिता की मृत्यु को याद करके वह अत्यंत क्रोधित हो गये। वह तेजी से अपने रथ से उतरा और उन पर टूट पड़ा।

सहस्रचन्द्रं विपुलं गृहीत्वा चर्म संयुगे खड्गं च विपुलं दिव्यं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् द्रौपदेयानभिद्रुत्य खड्गेन व्यचरद्बली

In that encounter, he picked up a giant shield that had the marks of one thousand moons and also a large and shining sword that was decorated with gold. With that sword, the powerful one roamed around and attacked Draupadī's sons.

उस मुठभेड़ में, उसने एक विशाल ढाल उठाई जिस पर एक हजार चंद्रमाओं के निशान थे और एक बड़ी और चमकदार तलवार भी थी जो सोने से सजी हुई थी। उस तलवार से वह शक्तिशाली चारों ओर घूमता रहा और द्रौपदी के पुत्रों पर हमला करता रहा।

ततः स नरशार्दूलः प्रतिविन्ध्यं तमाहवे कुक्षिदेशेऽवधीद्राजन्स हतो न्यपतद्भुवि

O king! In that encounter, the tiger among men struck Prativindhya in the abdomen and killed him. Slain, he fell down on the ground.

हे राजा! उस मुठभेड़ में, मनुष्यों के बीच बाघ ने प्रतिविन्ध्य के पेट में हमला किया और उसे मार डाला। वह मारा गया और भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।

प्रासेन विद्ध्वा द्रौणिं तु सुतसोमः प्रतापवान् पुनश्चासिं समुद्यम्य द्रोणपुत्रमुपाद्रवत्

The powerful Sutasoma struck Droṇa's son with a javelin and again attacked Droṇa's son with a sword.

शक्तिशाली सुतसोम ने द्रोण के पुत्र पर भाले से प्रहार किया और फिर द्रोण के पुत्र पर तलवार से हमला किया।

सुतसोमस्य सासिं तु बाहुं छित्त्वा नरर्षभः पुनरभ्यहनत्पार्श्वे स भिन्नहृदयोऽपतत्

However, the bull among men severed Sutasoma's arm, with the sword in it. He struck him again in the side and with his heart shattered, he fell down.

हालाँकि, पुरुषों के बीच बैल ने सुतसोमा की बांह को तलवार से काट दिया। उसने उसकी बाजू पर फिर से प्रहार किया और उसका हृदय चकनाचूर हो गया और वह गिर पड़ा।

Nākula's valiant son, Śatānīka, picked up a chariot wheel. Using both his hands, he flung it with great force and struck him in the chest.

नकुल के वीर पुत्र शतानीक ने रथ का पहिया उठा लिया। अपने दोनों हाथों का उपयोग करके, उसने उसे बहुत जोर से फेंका और उसकी छाती में मारा।

अताडयच्छतानीकं मुक्तचक्रं द्विजस्तु सः स विह्वलो ययौ भूमिं ततोऽस्यापाहरच्छिरः

However, after the wheel had been flung, the brāhmaṇa attacked Śatānīka. He lost his senses and fell down on the ground and he severed his head.

हालाँकि, पहिया घुमाने के बाद, ब्राह्मण ने शतानीक पर हमला किया। वह अपनी सुध-बुध खोकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ा और उसका सिर धड़ से अलग हो गया।

Shrutakarma picked up a club and attacked him. He attacked Droṇa's son and severely struck him on the left side of his head.

श्रुतकर्मा ने एक गदा उठायी और उस पर आक्रमण कर दिया। उसने द्रोण के पुत्र पर हमला किया और उसके सिर के बायीं ओर गंभीर प्रहार किया।

स तु तं श्रुतकर्माणमास्ये जघ्ने वरासिना स हतो न्यपतद्भूमौ विमूढो विकृताननः

However, with that supreme sword, he struck Shrutakarma on his face. Slain and bereft of his senses, he fell down on the ground, with his face disfigured.

हालाँकि, उस सर्वोच्च तलवार से, उसने श्रुतकर्मा के चेहरे पर वार किया। वह मारा गया और अपनी सुध-बुध खोकर, अपना चेहरा विकृत करके, भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।

At this sound, the brave Śrutakīrti seized a giant bow. He attacked Aśvatthāma and countered him with a shower of arrows.

इस ध्वनि पर वीर श्रुतकीर्ति ने एक विशाल धनुष उठा लिया। उसने अश्वत्थामा पर आक्रमण किया और बाणों की वर्षा से उसका प्रतिकार किया।

तस्यापि शरवर्षाणि चर्मणा प्रतिवार्य सः सकुण्डलं शिरः कायाद्भ्राजमानमपाहरत्

However, he countered that shower of arrows with his shield. O king! He then severed his head, with the earrings, from his body.

हालाँकि, उन्होंने बाणों की उस वर्षा का मुकाबला अपनी ढाल से किया। हे राजा! फिर उसने बालियों सहित उसका सिर शरीर से अलग कर दिया।

ततो भीष्मनिहन्ता तं सह सर्वैः प्रभद्रकैः अहनत्सर्वतो वीरं नानाप्रहरणैर्बली शिलीमुखेन चाप्येनं भ्रुवोर्मध्ये समार्दयत्

The slayer of Bhīṣma, together with all the Prabhadraka-s, armed themselves with many weapons and attacked the brave and powerful one from all sides. He used his bow to strike him between the eyebrows with an arrow with a stone head.

भीष्म के हत्यारे ने सभी प्रभद्रकों के साथ मिलकर खुद को कई हथियारों से लैस किया और सभी तरफ से बहादुर और शक्तिशाली पर हमला किया। उसने अपने धनुष का उपयोग करके उसकी भौंहों के बीच पत्थर के सिर वाले तीर से हमला किया।

स तु क्रोधसमाविष्टो द्रोणपुत्रो महाबलः शिखण्डिनं समासाद्य द्विधा चिच्छेद सोऽसिना

At this, Droṇa's extremely powerful son was filled with great rage. He attacked Śikhaṇḍī and cut him down into two pieces with his sword.

इस पर द्रोण का अत्यंत शक्तिशाली पुत्र अत्यंत क्रोध से भर गया। उसने शिखंडी पर हमला किया और अपनी तलवार से उसके दो टुकड़े कर दिये।

शिखण्डिनं ततो हत्वा क्रोधाविष्टः परंतपः प्रभद्रकगणान्सर्वानभिदुद्राव वेगवान् यच्च शिष्टं विराटस्य बलं तच्च समाद्रवत्

Having killed Śikhaṇḍī, the scorcher of enemies was enraged and powerfully attacked all the large numbers of Prabhadraka-s. He also attacked the remaining troops in Virāṭa's army.

शिखंडी को मारने के बाद, शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाला क्रोधित हो गया और उसने सभी बड़ी संख्या में प्रभद्रकों पर शक्तिशाली हमला किया। उसने विराट की सेना में शेष सैनिकों पर भी हमला किया।

द्रुपदस्य च पुत्राणां पौत्राणां सुहृदामपि चकार कदनं घोरं दृष्ट्वा दृष्ट्वा महाबलः

Wherever the immensely strong one saw the sons, grandsons and well-wishers of Drupada, he created a terrible carnage.

उस परम बलशाली ने जहाँ भी द्रुपद के पुत्रों, पौत्रों तथा शुभचिंतकों को देखा, वहीं भयंकर मारकाट मचा दी।

अन्यानन्यांश्च पुरुषानभिसृत्याभिसृत्य च न्यकृन्तदसिना द्रौणिरसिमार्गविशारदः

He attacked many other men and killed them, one after the other. Droṇa's son was skilled in executing motions with the sword and struck them down with his sword.

उसने एक के बाद एक कई अन्य लोगों पर हमला किया और उन्हें मार डाला। द्रोण का पुत्र तलवार से कार्यों को अंजाम देने में कुशल था और उसने अपनी तलवार से उन्हें मार गिराया।

कालीं रक्तास्यनयनां रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाम् रक्ताम्बरधरामेकां पाशहस्तां शिखण्डिनीम्

They saw Kālī, with red eyes and a red mouth, adorned in red garlands and smeared with crimson paste. She was attired in a single red garment and had a noose in her hand. She had a tuft on her head.

उन्होंने लाल आँखों और लाल मुँह वाली काली को देखा, जो लाल मालाओं से सजी हुई थी और लाल रंग के लेप से सजी हुई थी। वह एक ही लाल वस्त्र पहने हुई थी और उसके हाथ में फंदा था। उसके सिर पर एक शिखा थी।

ददृशुः कालरात्रिं ते स्मयमानामवस्थिताम् नराश्वकुञ्जरान्पाशैर्बद्ध्वा घोरैः प्रतस्थुषीम् हरन्तीं विविधान्प्रेतान्पाशबद्धान्विमूर्धजान्

They saw that dark night stationed before them, as if she was smiling. She seemed to have tied up men, horses and elephants in a terrible bond. She seemed to tie up many dead bodies with nooses in their hair and bear them away.

उन्होंने देखा कि वह अँधेरी रात उनके सामने खड़ी थी, मानो वह मुस्कुरा रही हो। ऐसा प्रतीत होता था जैसे उसने मनुष्यों, घोड़ों और हाथियों को एक भयानक बंधन में बाँध दिया हो। वह अनेकों शवों को अपने बालों में फंदा बनाकर बाँधकर ले जाती हुई प्रतीत होती थी।

स्वप्ने सुप्तान्नयन्तीं तां रात्रिष्वन्यासु मारिष ददृशुर्योधमुख्यास्ते घ्नन्तं द्रौणिं च नित्यदा

O venerable one! The foremost among warriors were sleeping and in their dreams saw them borne away by the night, as they were constantly struck by Droṇa's son.

हे आदरणीय! योद्धाओं में सबसे अग्रणी सो रहे थे और उन्होंने सपने में देखा कि वे रात में उड़े हुए हैं, क्योंकि उन पर लगातार द्रोण के पुत्र द्वारा प्रहार किया जा रहा था।

यतः प्रवृत्तः संग्रामः कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः ततः प्रभृति तां कृत्यामपश्यन्द्रौणिमेव च

Since the battle between the Kuru and the Pāṇḍava soldiers had commenced, they had always seen that female deity and Droṇa's son in their dreams.

जब से कुरु और पांडव सैनिकों के बीच युद्ध शुरू हुआ था, वे हमेशा अपने सपनों में उस महिला देवता और द्रोण के पुत्र को देखते थे।

तांस्तु दैवहतान्पूर्वं पश्चाद्द्रौणिर्न्यपातयत् त्रासयन्सर्वभूतानि विनदन्भैरवान्रवान्

They had already been slain by destiny and later, they were brought down by Droṇa's son. He roared frightfully and terrified all the beings.

वे पहले ही नियति द्वारा मारे जा चुके थे और बाद में, द्रोण के पुत्र द्वारा उन्हें मार गिराया गया। उसने भयानक गर्जना की और सभी प्राणियों को भयभीत कर दिया।

तदनुस्मृत्य ते वीरा दर्शनं पौर्वकालिकम् इदं तदित्यमन्यन्त दैवेनोपनिपीडिताः

Those brave ones remembered the Kālī that they had seen earlier. As they were oppressed by destiny, that is what they thought.

उन वीरों को उस काली की याद आयी जिसे उन्होंने पहले देखा था। चूँकि नियति ने उन पर अत्याचार किया था, इसलिए उन्होंने यही सोचा।

ततस्तेन निनादेन प्रत्यबुध्यन्त धन्विनः शिबिरे पाण्डवेयानां शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

Because of those roars, hundreds and thousands of archers in the camp of the Pāṇḍaveya-s woke up.

उन गर्जनाओं से पाण्डवों के शिविर के सैकड़ों-हजारों धनुर्धर जाग उठे।

सोऽच्छिनत्कस्यचित्पादौ जघनं चैव कस्यचित् कांश्चिद्बिभेद पार्श्वेषु कालसृष्ट इवान्तकः

Like Death created by Destiny, he severed the feet of some and the thighs of others. He shattered the flanks of others.

नियति द्वारा रचित मृत्यु की तरह, उसने कुछ के पैर और कुछ की जाँघें काट दीं। उसने दूसरों के पार्श्व भाग को चकनाचूर कर दिया।

अत्युग्रप्रतिपिष्टैश्च नदद्भिश्च भृशातुरैः गजाश्वमथितैश्चान्यैर्मही कीर्णाभवत्प्रभो

As they were crushed severely, they emitted piteous sounds of lamentation. O lord! The earth was covered by them and there were others who were crushed by elephants and horses.

जैसे ही उन्हें बुरी तरह कुचला गया, उन्होंने विलाप की करुण ध्वनियाँ निकालीं। हे भगवान! पृथ्वी उनसे आच्छादित हो गयी थी और कुछ ऐसे भी थे जिन्हें हाथियों और घोड़ों ने कुचल डाला था।

क्रोशतां किमिदं कोऽयं किं शब्दः किं नु किं कृतम् एवं तेषां तदा द्रौणिरन्तकः समपद्यत

Some exclaimed, "What is this? Who is this? What is this noise? Who has done this?" As they wailed thus, Droṇa's son became their destroyer.

कुछ लोग चिल्ला उठे, "यह क्या है? यह कौन है? यह कैसा शोर है? यह किसने किया है?" जब वे इस प्रकार विलाप कर रहे थे, तो द्रोण का पुत्र उनका विनाशक बन गया।

अपेतशस्त्रसंनाहान्संरब्धान्पाण्डुसृञ्जयान् प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय द्रौणिः प्रहरतां वरः

He angrily destroyed the Pāṇḍu-s and the Sṛñjaya-s, who were without weapons and armour. Droṇa's son, supreme among strikers, dispatched them to the world of the dead.

उन्होंने गुस्से में पांडु-एस और सृंजय-एस को नष्ट कर दिया, जो बिना हथियारों और कवच के थे। आक्रमणकारियों में श्रेष्ठ द्रोण के पुत्र ने उन्हें मृतकों के लोक में भेज दिया।

ततस्तच्छस्त्रवित्रस्ता उत्पतन्तो भयातुराः निद्रान्धा नष्टसंज्ञाश्च तत्र तत्र निलिल्यिरे

They were without weapons and awoke, overcome by fear. Some were blind with sleep and bereft of their senses. They seemed to vanish there.

वे बिना हथियार के थे और डर के मारे जाग गये। कुछ लोग नींद से अंधे हो गए थे और अपनी इंद्रियों से रहित हो गए थे। वे वहां लुप्त होते प्रतीत हो रहे थे।

ऊरुस्तम्भगृहीताश्च कश्मलाभिहतौजसः विनदन्तो भृशं त्रस्ताः संन्यपेषन्परस्परम्

Some were paralysed in their thighs. Others were full of lassitude and lost their energy. They lamented in great fright and began to kill each other.

कुछ की जाँघों में लकवा मार गया था। अन्य लोग आलस्य से भरे हुए थे और अपनी ऊर्जा खो बैठे थे। वे अत्यंत भयभीत होकर विलाप करने लगे और एक-दूसरे को मारने लगे।

ततो रथं पुनर्द्रौणिरास्थितो भीमनिस्वनम् धनुष्पाणिः शरैरन्यान्प्रेषयद्वै यमक्षयम्

Droṇa's son once again ascended his chariot, the one that made a thunderous noise. With the bow in his hand, he used arrows to dispatch many others to Yāma's eternal abode.

द्रोण का पुत्र एक बार फिर उसके रथ पर चढ़ गया, जिसने भयंकर ध्वनि की। अपने हाथ में धनुष लेकर, उन्होंने कई अन्य लोगों को यम के शाश्वत निवास में भेजने के लिए तीरों का उपयोग किया।

पुनरुत्पततः कांश्चिद्दूरादपि नरोत्तमान् शूरान्संपततश्चान्यान्कालरात्र्यै न्यवेदयत्

Other best among men sought to approach him again. But while they were still at a distance, those brave ones were offered up to that terrible night.

अन्य सर्वश्रेष्ठ पुरुषों ने उनसे दोबारा संपर्क करने की कोशिश की। लेकिन जब वे अभी भी कुछ दूरी पर थे, उन बहादुरों को उस भयानक रात के लिए पेश किया गया।

तथैव स्यन्दनाग्रेण प्रमथन्स विधावति शरवर्षैश्च विविधैरवर्षच्छात्रवांस्ततः

He crushed many with that fierce chariot. He showered the enemy with many diverse kinds of arrows.

उसने उस भयंकर रथ से बहुतों को कुचल डाला। उन्होंने शत्रु पर अनेक प्रकार के बाणों की वर्षा की।

पुनश्च सुविचित्रेण शतचन्द्रेण चर्मणा तेन चाकाशवर्णेन तदाचरत सोऽसिना

Yet again, he grasped that extremely wonderful shield marked with the signs of one hundred moons and the sword that possessed the complexion of the sky, and roamed around.

फिर भी उसने एक सौ चन्द्रमाओं के चिह्नों से अंकित अत्यंत अद्भुत ढाल तथा आकाश के समान वर्ण वाली तलवार को पकड़ लिया और इधर-उधर घूमने लगा।

तथा स शिबिरं तेषां द्रौणिराहवदुर्मदः व्यक्षोभयत राजेन्द्र महाह्रदमिव द्विपः

In that encounter in the camp, Droṇa's son was indomitable. O Indra among kings! He agitated them, like an elephant in a large lake.

शिविर में उस मुठभेड़ में द्रोण का पुत्र अदम्य था। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! उसने उन्हें एक बड़ी झील में हाथी की तरह उत्तेजित कर दिया।

उत्पेतुस्तेन शब्देन योधा राजन्विचेतसः निद्रार्ताश्च भयार्ताश्च व्यधावन्त ततस्ततः

O king! Many warriors were awoken by the noise, still somewhat unconscious. They were afflicted by sleep. They were afflicted by fear.

हे राजा! कई योद्धा शोर से जाग गए, फिर भी कुछ हद तक बेहोश थे। वे निद्रा से पीड़ित थे। वे भय से पीड़ित थे.

विस्वरं चुक्रुशुश्चान्ये बह्वबद्धं तथावदन् न च स्म प्रतिपद्यन्ते शस्त्राणि वसनानि च

They ran around, here and there. There were those who couldn't find a voice and others who shrieked. There were those who screamed a lot and those who screamed little. Some could not find their weapons and their garments.

वे इधर-उधर, इधर-उधर भागे। ऐसे लोग थे जिन्हें आवाज नहीं मिल रही थी और अन्य लोग चिल्ला रहे थे। कुछ ऐसे भी थे जो बहुत चिल्लाते थे और कुछ ऐसे भी थे जो कम चिल्लाते थे। कुछ को अपने हथियार और अपने कपड़े नहीं मिल सके।

विमुक्तकेशाश्चाप्यन्ये नाभ्यजानन्परस्परम् उत्पतन्तः परे भीताः केचित्तत्र तथाभ्रमन् पुरीषमसृजन्केचित्केचिन्मूत्रं प्रसुस्रुवुः

Others had dishevelled hair and could not recognize each other. There were others who awoke and were terrified. Some wandered around aimlessly. Some released excrement. Others released urine.

दूसरों के बाल बिखरे हुए थे और वे एक-दूसरे को पहचान नहीं पा रहे थे। कुछ अन्य लोग भी थे जो जाग गये और भयभीत हो गये। कुछ लोग निरुद्देश्य इधर-उधर घूमते रहे। कुछ ने मलमूत्र छोड़ा। दूसरों ने मूत्र त्याग दिया।

बन्धनानि च राजेन्द्र संछिद्य तुरगा द्विपाः समं पर्यपतंश्चान्ये कुर्वन्तो महदाकुलम्

O Indra among kings! The horses and the elephants tore off their bonds. Others clung to each other and crated a great melee.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! घोड़ों और हाथियों ने अपने बंधन तोड़ दिये। अन्य लोग एक-दूसरे से चिपक गए और जमकर हाथापाई की।

तत्र केचिन्नरा भीता व्यलीयन्त महीतले तथैव तान्निपतितानपिंषन्गजवाजिनः

Some men were frightened and lay down on the ground. As they fell down there, the elephants and the horses crushed them.

कुछ लोग डर गये और जमीन पर लेट गये। जैसे ही वे वहाँ गिरे, हाथियों और घोड़ों ने उन्हें कुचल दिया।

तस्मिंस्तथा वर्तमाने रक्षांसि पुरुषर्षभ तृप्तानि व्यनदन्नुच्चैर्मुदा भरतसत्तम

O bull among men! While this was going on, the rākṣasa-s were satisfied and screamed in delight. O best among the Bhārata lineage!

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! जब यह चल रहा था, राक्षस संतुष्ट हो गए और खुशी से चिल्लाने लगे। हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ!

स शब्दः प्रेरितो राजन्भूतसंघैर्मुदा युतैः अपूरयद्दिशः सर्वा दिवं चापि महास्वनः

O king! The large number of delighted demons emitted roars. That loud noise filled all the directions and the sky.

हे राजा! बड़ी संख्या में प्रसन्न राक्षस दहाड़ने लगे। उस तीव्र ध्वनि से समस्त दिशाएँ और आकाश भर गया।

तेषामार्तस्वरं श्रुत्वा वित्रस्ता गजवाजिनः मुक्ताः पर्यपतन्राजन्मृद्नन्तः शिबिरे जनम्

On hearing the woes of lamentation, the elephants and horses were frightened. O king! They freed themselves and as they fled, they crushed the men in the camp.

विलाप की व्यथा सुनकर हाथी-घोड़े भयभीत हो गये। हे राजा! उन्होंने अपने आप को मुक्त कर लिया और भागते समय उन्होंने शिविर में मौजूद लोगों को कुचल दिया।

तैस्तत्र परिधावद्भिश्चरणोदीरितं रजः अकरोच्छिबिरे तेषां रजन्यां द्विगुणं तमः

As they ran here and there, a dust arose from their feet and this doubled the darkness of the night in the camp.

जब वे इधर-उधर भागे, तो उनके पैरों से धूल उठी और इससे डेरे में रात का अँधेरा दोगुना हो गया।

तस्मिंस्तमसि संजाते प्रमूढाः सर्वतो जनाः नाजानन्पितरः पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्भ्रातर एव च

Because of the darkness that was created, all the people were confounded. They could no longer recognize their fathers and their sons. Nor did brothers recognize their brothers.

उस अन्धकार के कारण सब लोग घबरा गए। वे अब अपने पिता और पुत्रों को नहीं पहचान सके। न ही भाइयों ने अपने भाइयों को पहचाना.

गजा गजानतिक्रम्य निर्मनुष्या हया हयान् अताडयंस्तथाभञ्जंस्तथामृद्नंश्च भारत

Elephants attacked elephants that were without riders and horses attacked horses. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! They attacked, broke and crushed each other there.

हाथियों ने बिना सवार वाले हाथियों पर और घोड़ों ने घोड़ों पर आक्रमण किया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने वहां एक-दूसरे पर हमला किया, तोड़-फोड़ की और कुचल दिया।

ते भग्नाः प्रपतन्तश्च निघ्नन्तश्च परस्परम् न्यपातयन्त च परान्पातयित्वा तथापिषन्

As they were mangled and fell down, they killed each other. As they fell down, they brought down others and crushed them.

जैसे ही वे क्षत-विक्षत हो गए और नीचे गिर पड़े, उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को मार डाला। जैसे ही वे गिरे, उन्होंने दूसरों को नीचे गिरा दिया और उन्हें कुचल दिया।

विचेतसः सनिद्राश्च तमसा चावृता नराः जघ्नुः स्वानेव तत्राथ कालेनाभिप्रचोदिताः

The men were unconscious, sleepy and covered in darkness. Driven by destiny there, they killed those on their own side.

वे लोग बेहोश थे, नींद में थे और अंधेरे में ढके हुए थे। वहां नियति से प्रेरित होकर, उन्होंने अपने ही पक्ष के लोगों को मार डाला।

त्यक्त्वा द्वाराणि च द्वाःस्थास्तथा गुल्मांश्च गौल्मिकाः प्राद्रवन्त यथाशक्ति कांदिशीका विचेतसः

Those in charge of gates abandoned the gates. Those in charge of divisions abandoned the divisions. To the best of their capacity, they fled.

फाटकों के प्रभारी लोगों ने फाटकों को छोड़ दिया। डिवीजनों के प्रभारी लोगों ने डिवीजनों को छोड़ दिया। अपनी पूरी क्षमता से वे भाग गये।

विप्रनष्टाश्च तेऽन्योन्यं नाजानन्त तदा विभो क्रोशन्तस्तात पुत्रेति दैवोपहतचेतसः

They were unconscious and no longer knew the directions. O lord! Without knowing, they destroyed each other. Their senses robbed by destiny, they cried out for their fathers and their sons.

वे बेहोश थे और उन्हें अब दिशाओं का पता नहीं था। हे भगवान! बिना जाने उन्होंने एक दूसरे को नष्ट कर दिया। नियति ने उनकी इंद्रियों को लूट लिया, वे अपने पिता और अपने पुत्रों के लिए रोने लगे।

पलायतां दिशस्तेषां स्वानप्युत्सृज्य बान्धवान् गोत्रनामभिरन्योन्यमाक्रन्दन्त ततो जनाः

As they fled in various directions, they abandoned those on their own side and their relatives. Other men screamed and called out to each other by the names of their lineages.

जैसे ही वे विभिन्न दिशाओं में भागे, उन्होंने अपने और अपने रिश्तेदारों को छोड़ दिया। अन्य लोग चिल्लाये और एक दूसरे को अपने वंश के नाम से पुकारने लगे।

हाहाकारं च कुर्वाणाः पृथिव्यां शेरते परे तान्बुद्ध्वा रणमत्तोऽसौ द्रोणपुत्रो व्यपोथयत्

There were others who lamented as they fell down on the ground. Droṇa's son was crazy in that encounter. Recognizing them, he brought them down.

कुछ अन्य लोग भी थे जो ज़मीन पर गिरकर विलाप कर रहे थे। द्रोण का पुत्र उस मुठभेड़ में पागल हो गया था। उन्होंने उन्हें पहचान कर नीचे उतारा.

तत्रापरे वध्यमाना मुहुर्मुहुरचेतसः शिबिरान्निष्पतन्ति स्म क्षत्रिया भयपीडिताः

There were others who were repeatedly struck and lost their senses. Those kṣatriya-s were afflicted by fear and tried to run away from the camp.

कुछ अन्य लोग भी थे जिन पर बार-बार प्रहार किया गया और वे अपनी इंद्रियाँ खो बैठे। वे क्षत्रिय भय से पीड़ित हो गये और शिविर से भागने का प्रयास करने लगे।

तांस्तु निष्पततस्त्रस्ताञ्शिबिराञ्जीवितैषिणः कृतवर्मा कृपश्चैव द्वारदेशे निजघ्नतुः

Terrified and seeking to preserve their lives, they emerged from the camp. In the vicinity of the gate, they were killed by Kritavarma and Kṛpa.

भयभीत होकर और अपनी जान बचाने की कोशिश में, वे शिविर से बाहर निकले। द्वार के समीप ही कृतवर्मा और कृप ने उन्हें मार डाला।

विशस्त्रयन्त्रकवचान्मुक्तकेशान्कृताञ्जलीन् वेपमानान्क्षितौ भीतान्नैव कांश्चिदमुञ्चताम्

They were devoid of weapons, implements and armour. Their hair was dishevelled and they joined their hands in salutation. They trembled on the ground and were terrified.

वे हथियारों, औजारों और कवच से रहित थे। उनके बाल बिखरे हुए थे और उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर नमस्कार किया। वे भूमि पर कांपने लगे और भयभीत हो गये।

नामुच्यत तयोः कश्चिन्निष्क्रान्तः शिबिराद्बहिः कृपस्य च महाराज हार्दिक्यस्य च दुर्मतेः

They begged to be set free. O great king! But those who emerged outside the camp were not set free by the evil-minded Kṛpa and Hārdikya.

उन्होंने मुक्त करने की गुहार लगाई। हे महान राजा! लेकिन जो लोग शिविर के बाहर आये, उन्हें दुष्ट-बुद्धि कृपा और हार्दिक्य ने मुक्त नहीं किया।

भूयश्चैव चिकीर्षन्तौ द्रोणपुत्रस्य तौ प्रियम् त्रिषु देशेषु ददतुः शिबिरस्य हुताशनम्

They also wanted to do that which would please Droṇa's son. Therefore, in three places, they set fire to the camp.

वे वह भी करना चाहते थे जिससे द्रोण के पुत्र प्रसन्न हों। अत: तीन स्थानों पर उन्होंने छावनी में आग लगा दी।

ततः प्रकाशे शिबिरे खड्गेन पितृनन्दनः अश्वत्थामा महाराज व्यचरत्कृतहस्तवत्

O great king! When the camp was thus lit, Aśvatthāma, the one who delighted his father, roamed around with the sword, exhibiting the dexterity of his hands.

हे महान राजा! जब शिविर में इस प्रकार प्रकाश डाला गया, तो अपने पिता को प्रसन्न करने वाला अश्वत्थामा, अपने हाथों की कुशलता का प्रदर्शन करते हुए, तलवार लेकर चारों ओर घूमने लगा।

कांश्चिदापततो वीरानपरांश्च प्रधावतः व्ययोजयत खड्गेन प्राणैर्द्विजवरो नरान्

Some brave ones attacked, others ran away. The best of brāhmana-s used his sword to rob all those men of their lives.

कुछ वीरों ने आक्रमण किया, कुछ भाग खड़े हुए। श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों ने उन सभी मनुष्यों को लूटने के लिए अपनी तलवार का प्रयोग किया।

कांश्चिद्योधान्स खड्गेन मध्ये संछिद्य वीर्यवान् अपातयद्द्रोणसुतः संरब्धस्तिलकाण्डवत्

The valiant one severed some warriors in the middle with his sword. Droṇa's son angrily brought them down, as if they were stalks of sesamum.

उस वीर ने बीच में से कुछ योद्धाओं को अपनी तलवार से काट डाला। द्रोण के पुत्र ने क्रोधपूर्वक उन्हें नीचे गिरा दिया, मानो वे तिल के डंठल हों।

विनदद्भिर्भृशायस्तैर्नराश्वद्विरदोत्तमैः पतितैरभवत्कीर्णा मेदिनी भरतर्षभ

Men, horses and the best of elephants shrieked in grievous tones. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! They fell down and were strewn all over the ground.

मनुष्य, घोड़े तथा श्रेष्ठ हाथी गंभीर स्वर में चिल्लाने लगे। हे भरत वंश में बैल! वे गिर गये और ज़मीन पर इधर-उधर बिखर गये।

मानुषाणां सहस्रेषु हतेषु पतितेषु च उदतिष्ठन्कबन्धानि बहून्युत्थाय चापतन्

Thousands of men were slain and fell down. There were many headless torsos which were seen to rise and then fall down again.

हजारों आदमी मारे गये और गिर गये। वहाँ अनेक बिना सिर के धड़ थे जो उठते और फिर नीचे गिरते दिखाई देते थे।

सायुधान्साङ्गदान्बाहून्निचकर्त शिरांसि च हस्तिहस्तोपमानूरून्हस्तान्पादांश्च भारत

Arms with weapons and armlets, and heads, were severed. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There were thighs that were like the trunks of elephants, and arms and feet.

अस्त्र-शस्त्र, बाजूबंद और सिर सहित भुजाएँ काट डाली गईं। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हाथियों की सूंड के समान जाँघें और भुजाएँ तथा पैर थे।

पृष्ठच्छिन्नाञ्शिरश्छिन्नान्पार्श्वच्छिन्नांस्तथापरान् समासाद्याकरोद्द्रौणिः कांश्चिच्चापि पराङ्मुखान्

The backs of some were mangled, and the heads of others. The flanks of others were mangled. Droṇa's son attacked them all, while some retreated.

किसी की पीठ क्षत-विक्षत थी तो किसी के सिर। दूसरों के पार्श्व भाग क्षत-विक्षत हो गये। द्रोण के पुत्र ने उन सभी पर हमला किया, जबकि कुछ पीछे हट गए।

मध्यकायान्नरानन्यांश्चिच्छेदान्यांश्च कर्णतः अंसदेशे निहत्यान्यान्काये प्रावेशयच्छिरः

He severed the bodies of some men at the middle and sliced off the ears of others. He struck others on the shoulders and pressed down the heads of some into their bodies.

उसने कुछ आदमियों के शरीर को बीच से अलग कर दिया और कुछ के कान काट दिये। उसने दूसरों के कंधों पर वार किया और कुछ के सिर उनके शरीर में दबा दिये।

एवं विचरतस्तस्य निघ्नतः सुबहून्नरान् तमसा रजनी घोरा बभौ दारुणदर्शना

While he roamed around, slaughtering many men, the terrible night was covered in darkness and seemed to become even more fearful.

जब वह अनेक मनुष्यों का संहार करता हुआ इधर-उधर घूमता रहा, तो वह भयानक रात अँधेरे में घिर गयी और और भी अधिक भयावह प्रतीत होने लगी।

किंचित्प्राणैश्च पुरुषैर्हतैश्चान्यैः सहस्रशः बहुना च गजाश्वेन भूरभूद्भीमदर्शना

Some still had some life left. Other men were slain in thousands. There were innumerable elephants and horses on the ground and it looked terrible.

कुछ में अभी भी कुछ जीवन बाकी था। अन्य लोग हजारों की संख्या में मारे गये। जमीन पर असंख्य हाथी और घोड़े थे और वह भयानक लग रही थी।

यक्षरक्षःसमाकीर्णे रथाश्वद्विपदारुणे क्रुद्धेन द्रोणपुत्रेण संछिन्नाः प्रापतन्भुवि

It was full of yakṣa-s and rākṣasa-s. It was terrible because of the chariots, the horses and the elephants. As Droṇa's son angrily severed them, they fell down on the ground.

यह यक्ष और राक्षसों से भरा हुआ था। रथों, घोड़ों और हाथियों के कारण वह भयानक था। जैसे ही द्रोण के पुत्र ने क्रोधपूर्वक उन्हें काट डाला, वे भूमि पर गिर पड़े।

मातॄरन्ये पितॄनन्ये भ्रातॄनन्ये विचुक्रुशुः केचिदूचुर्न तत्क्रुद्धैर्धार्तराष्ट्रैः कृतं रणे

Some screamed for their mothers, others for their fathers, and still others for their brothers. Some exclaimed, "The angry sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra could not accomplish this in the battle.

कुछ अपनी माँ के लिए चिल्लाए, कुछ अपने पिता के लिए, और कुछ अपने भाइयों के लिए चिल्लाए। कुछ लोगों ने कहा, "धृतराष्ट्र के क्रोधित पुत्र युद्ध में ऐसा नहीं कर सके।

यत्कृतं नः प्रसुप्तानां रक्षोभिः क्रूरकर्मभिः असांनिध्याद्धि पार्थानामिदं नः कदनं कृतम्

While we were sleeping, the evil-acting rākṣasa-s have done this. Indeed, in the absence of the Pārtha-s, this destruction has been done to us.

जब हम सो रहे थे, दुष्ट राक्षसों ने यह किया है। सचमुच, पार्थ-स के अभाव में ही हमारा यह विनाश हुआ है।

न देवासुरगन्धर्वैर्न यक्षैर्न च राक्षसैः शक्यो विजेतुं कौन्तेयो गोप्ता यस्य जनार्दनः

As long as he is protected by Janārdana, Kaunteya is incapable of being vanquished by gods, āsura-s, gāndharva-s, yakṣa-s and rākṣasa-s.

जब तक कौन्तेय जनार्दन द्वारा संरक्षित है, वह देवताओं, असुरों, गंधर्वों, यक्षों और राक्षसों द्वारा पराजित होने में असमर्थ है।

ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवाग्दान्तः सर्वभूतानुकम्पकः न च सुप्तं प्रमत्तं वा न्यस्तशस्त्रं कृताञ्जलिम् धावन्तं मुक्तकेशं वा हन्ति पार्थो धनंजयः

He is devoted to brāhmana-s. He is truthful in speech. He is controlled. He is compassionate towards all beings. Pārtha Dhanañjayā does not kill one who is sleeping, one who is distracted, one who has cast aside his weapons, one who has joined his hands in salutation, one who is running away, or one whose hair is dishevelled.

वह ब्राह्मणों के प्रति समर्पित है। वह बोलने में सच्चा है। वह नियंत्रित है. वह सभी प्राणियों के प्रति दयालु है। पार्थ धनंजय उस व्यक्ति को नहीं मारता जो सो रहा है, जो विचलित है, जो अपने हथियार फेंक चुका है, जो नमस्कार में हाथ जोड़े हुए है, जो भाग रहा है, या जिसके बाल बिखरे हुए हैं।

तदिदं नः कृतं घोरं रक्षोभिः क्रूरकर्मभिः इति लालप्यमानाः स्म शेरते बहवो जनाः

These rākṣasa-s, evil in their deeds, are perpetrating these terrible acts on us." Lamenting in this way, many men lay down.

अपने कर्मों में दुष्ट ये राक्षस हम पर यह भयानक कृत्य कर रहे हैं।" इस प्रकार विलाप करते हुए बहुत से मनुष्य लेट गये।

स्तनतां च मनुष्याणामपरेषां च कूजताम् ततो मुहूर्तात्प्राशाम्यत्स शब्दस्तुमुलो महान्

The lamentations of men and the shrieks of others died down in a short while. That great and tumultuous sound was pacified.

मनुष्यों का विलाप और दूसरों की चीख-पुकार थोड़ी ही देर में शांत हो गयी। वह महान एवं कोलाहलपूर्ण ध्वनि शांत हो गयी।

शोणितव्यतिषिक्तायां वसुधायां च भूमिप तद्रजस्तुमुलं घोरं क्षणेनान्तरधीयत

O lord of the earth! The earth was sprinkled with blood and because of that, the large and fierce dust swiftly disappeared.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! पृथ्वी खून से लथपथ हो गई और उसके कारण बड़ी और भयंकर धूल तेजी से गायब हो गई।

संवेष्टमानानुद्विग्नान्निरुत्साहान्सहस्रशः न्यपातयन्नरान्क्रुद्धः पशून्पशुपतिर्यथा

Thousands of men were bereft of enterprise and writhed around in agony. As they fell down, those men were angrily killed, like Paśupati amidst animals.

हजारों आदमी उद्यम से वंचित हो गए और पीड़ा में इधर-उधर छटपटा रहे थे। जैसे ही वे नीचे गिरे, उन लोगों को जानवरों के बीच पशुपति की तरह गुस्से से मार डाला गया।

अन्योन्यं संपरिष्वज्य शयानान्द्रवतोऽपरान् संलीनान्युध्यमानांश्च सर्वान्द्रौणिरपोथयत्

There were some who clung to each other as they lay down. There were others who ran away. Some tried to hide, while others tried to fight. However, Droṇa's son brought all of them down.

कुछ ऐसे भी थे जो लेटते समय एक-दूसरे से चिपक गए। कुछ और भी थे जो भाग गये। कुछ ने छिपने की कोशिश की, जबकि अन्य ने लड़ने की कोशिश की। हालाँकि, द्रोण के पुत्र ने उन सभी को नीचे गिरा दिया।

दह्यमाना हुताशेन वध्यमानाश्च तेन ते परस्परं तदा योधा अनयन्यमसादनम्

Being burned by the fire and struck by him, they, the warriors, then led each other to the abode of Yāma, the god of death.

आग से जलने और उसके द्वारा मारे जाने के बाद, वे योद्धा एक-दूसरे को मृत्यु के देवता यम के निवास तक ले गए।

तस्या रजन्यास्त्वर्धेन पाण्डवानां महद्बलम् गमयामास राजेन्द्र द्रौणिर्यमनिवेशनम्

O Indra among kings! Before half of the night was over, that large army of the Pāṇḍava-s was conveyed by Droṇa's son to Yāma's abode.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! आधी रात बीतने से पहले, पांडवों की उस विशाल सेना को द्रोण के पुत्र ने यम के निवास पर पहुँचा दिया।

निशाचराणां सत्त्वानां स रात्रिर्हर्षवर्धिनी आसीन्नरगजाश्वानां रौद्री क्षयकरी भृशम्

That night increased the delight of creatures that roam around in the night, though it caused a terrible carnage among men, elephants and horses.

उस रात ने रात में घूमने वाले प्राणियों का आनंद बढ़ा दिया, हालाँकि इससे मनुष्यों, हाथियों और घोड़ों के बीच भयानक नरसंहार हुआ।

तत्रादृश्यन्त रक्षांसि पिशाचाश्च पृथग्विधाः खादन्तो नरमांसानि पिबन्तः शोणितानि च

Many different kinds of rākṣasa-s and piśāca-s were seen there. They fed on the flesh of men and drank the blood.

वहाँ अनेक प्रकार के राक्षस और पिशाच देखे गये। वे मनुष्यों का मांस खाते थे और उनका खून पीते थे।

करालाः पिङ्गला रौद्राः शैलदन्ता रजस्वलाः जटिला दीर्घसक्थाश्च पञ्चपादा महोदराः

They were fierce, tawny and terrible. They had teeth like stone and were covered with blood. Their hair was matted and their thighs were long. They had five feet and large stomachs.

वे भयंकर, चिड़चिड़े और भयानक थे। उनके दांत पत्थर जैसे थे और खून से लथपथ थे। उनके बाल उलझे हुए थे और जाँघें लंबी थीं। उनके पाँच पैर और बड़े पेट थे।

पश्चादङ्गुलयो रूक्षा विरूपा भैरवस्वनाः घटजानवोऽतिह्रस्वाश्च नीलकण्ठा विभीषणाः

There were those with five fingers, harsh and malformed, with terrible roars. Some had knees that were like jars. Others were short in stature, blue in the throat and fierce. They were extremely cruel and hideous.

पाँच अंगुलियों वाले, कठोर और विकृत, भयानक दहाड़ वाले लोग थे। कुछ के घुटने घड़े जैसे थे। अन्य छोटे कद के, गले के नीले और भयंकर थे। वे अत्यंत क्रूर और वीभत्स थे।

सपुत्रदाराः सुक्रूरा दुर्दर्शनसुनिर्घृणाः विविधानि च रूपाणि तत्रादृश्यन्त रक्षसाम्

They were abominable and came with their sons and wives. Rākṣasa-s of many different kinds of forms were seen there.

वे घृणित थे और अपने पुत्रों और पत्नियों के साथ आये। वहाँ अनेक प्रकार के रूप वाले राक्षस देखे गये।

पीत्वा च शोणितं हृष्टाः प्रानृत्यन्गणशोऽपरे इदं वरमिदं मेध्यमिदं स्वाद्विति चाब्रुवन्

They cheerfully drank the blood. Others danced around in large numbers. They exclaimed, "This is great. This is pure. This is tasty."

उन्होंने खुशी-खुशी खून पी लिया। अन्य लोगों ने बड़ी संख्या में नृत्य किया। उन्होंने कहा, "यह बहुत अच्छा है। यह शुद्ध है। यह स्वादिष्ट है।"

मेदोमज्जास्थिरक्तानां वसानां च भृशाशिताः परमांसानि खादन्तः क्रव्यादा मांसजीविनः

There were also carnivorous creatures that subsisted on flesh. They fed on the fat, marrow, bones, blood, oily substances and other parts of the body that they regarded as excellent meat.

ऐसे मांसाहारी जीव भी थे जो मांस खाकर जीवित रहते थे। वे वसा, मज्जा, हड्डियाँ, रक्त, तैलीय पदार्थ और शरीर के अन्य भागों को खाते थे जिन्हें वे उत्कृष्ट मांस मानते थे।

वसां चाप्यपरे पीत्वा पर्यधावन्विकुक्षिलाः नानावक्त्रास्तथा रौद्राः क्रव्यादाः पिशिताशिनः

Other demons drank the fat that flowed and danced around. There were terrible and fierce carnivorous creatures that fed on flesh, with many kinds of mouths.

अन्य राक्षसों ने बहने वाली चर्बी को पी लिया और चारों ओर नृत्य किया। वहाँ कई प्रकार के मुँह वाले भयानक और भयंकर मांसाहारी जीव थे जो मांस खाते थे।

अयुतानि च तत्रासन्प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च रक्षसां घोररूपाणां महतां क्रूरकर्मणाम्

They came there, in tens of thousands, millions and tens of millions. There were gigantic rākṣasa-s terrible in form, the performers of cruel deeds.

वे वहां आये, हजारों, लाखों और करोड़ों की संख्या में। भयंकर रूप वाले, क्रूर कर्म करने वाले विशाल राक्षस थे।

मुदितानां वितृप्तानां तस्मिन्महति वैशसे समेतानि बहून्यासन्भूतानि च जनाधिप

They were delighted and satisfied at this destruction. O lord of men! Many such demons assembled.

वे इस विनाश से प्रसन्न और संतुष्ट थे। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! ऐसे बहुत से राक्षस इकट्ठे हो गये।

प्रत्यूषकाले शिबिरात्प्रतिगन्तुमियेष सः नृशोणितावसिक्तस्य द्रौणेरासीदसित्सरुः पाणिना सह संश्लिष्ट एकीभूत इव प्रभो

When it was morning, Droṇa's son desired to leave the camp. His body was covered in human blood and the sword was still in his grasp. O lord! It was as if the sword had become one with his hand.

जब सुबह हुई, तो द्रोण के पुत्र ने शिविर छोड़ने की इच्छा की। उसका शरीर मानव रक्त से लथपथ था और तलवार अभी भी उसकी मुट्ठी में थी। हे भगवान! ऐसा लगा मानो तलवार उसके हाथ से एक हो गयी हो।

स निःशेषानरीन्कृत्वा विरराज जनक्षये युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि भस्म कृत्वेव पावकः

Having destroyed the men, he was resplendent in that carnage of men. He was like a fire that consumes all beings, when the destruction of a yuga is near.

मनुष्यों को नष्ट करने के बाद, वह मनुष्यों के उस नरसंहार में देदीप्यमान था। वह उस अग्नि के समान था जो युग का विनाश निकट होने पर सभी प्राणियों को भस्म कर देती है।

यथाप्रतिज्ञं तत्कर्म कृत्वा द्रौणायनिः प्रभो दुर्गमां पदवीं कृत्वा पितुरासीद्गतज्वरः

O lord! Droṇa's son accomplished the task that he swore to undertake, but walked along an undesirable path. He followed an extremely difficult path and forgot the fever on account of his father.

हे भगवान! द्रोण के पुत्र ने वह कार्य पूरा किया जिसे करने की उसने शपथ ली थी, लेकिन वह अवांछनीय मार्ग पर चल पड़ा। उन्होंने बेहद कठिन रास्ता अपनाया और अपने पिता के कारण हुए बुखार को भूल गए।

यथैव संसुप्तजने शिबिरे प्राविशन्निशि तथैव हत्वा निःशब्दे निश्चक्राम नरर्षभः

The camp was asleep, when he had entered in the night and killed. In a similar silence, the bull among men emerged.

कैंप सो रहा था, तभी रात में उसने घुसकर हत्या कर दी। इसी तरह की खामोशी में, मनुष्यों के बीच बैल का उदय हुआ।

निष्क्रम्य शिबिरात्तस्मात्ताभ्यां संगम्य वीर्यवान् आचख्यौ कर्म तत्सर्वं हृष्टः संहर्षयन्विभो

With the other two, the valiant one emerged from the camp. O lord! He joyfully told them what he had accomplished and delighted them.

अन्य दो के साथ, बहादुर व्यक्ति शिविर से बाहर आया। हे भगवान! उसने ख़ुशी से उन्हें बताया कि उसने क्या हासिल किया है और उन्हें प्रसन्न किया।

तावप्याचख्यतुस्तस्मै प्रियं प्रियकरौ तदा पाञ्चालान्सृञ्जयांश्चैव विनिकृत्तान्सहस्रशः प्रीत्या चोच्चैरुदक्रोशंस्तथैवास्फोटयंस्तलान्

They also told him about the pleasant deeds that they had undertaken and about how they had destroyed thousands of Pāñcāla-s and Sṛñjaya-s. They roared in delight and slapped their palms.

उन्होंने उन्हें उन सुखद कार्यों के बारे में भी बताया जो उन्होंने किए थे और कैसे उन्होंने हजारों पंचालों और सृंजय को नष्ट कर दिया था। वे ख़ुशी से दहाड़ने लगे और अपनी हथेलियाँ थपथपाने लगे।

एवंविधा हि सा रात्रिः सोमकानां जनक्षये प्रसुप्तानां प्रमत्तानामासीत्सुभृशदारुणा

In this way, that night caused a great destruction of men among the Somaka-s. While they were asleep and unconscious, this terrible and fearful destruction took place.

इस प्रकार, उस रात ने सोमकों के बीच मनुष्यों का भारी विनाश किया। जब वे सो रहे थे और बेहोश थे, तब यह भयानक और भयानक विनाश हुआ।

असंशयं हि कालस्य पर्यायो दुरतिक्रमः तादृशा निहता यत्र कृत्वास्माकं जनक्षयम्

There is no doubt that the course of destiny cannot be crossed. Those who caused a great carnage of men amongst us were thus slain.

धृतराष्ट्र उवाच प्रागेव सुमहत्कर्म द्रौणिरेतन्महारथः नाकरोदीदृशं कस्मान्मत्पुत्रविजये धृतः

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: Why did Droṇa's mahāratha son not accomplish such a great deed earlier? He did not achieve such a feat, though he was firm in ensuring the victory of my son.

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: द्रोण के महारथ पुत्र ने पहले इतना महान कार्य क्यों नहीं किया? उन्होंने ऐसी उपलब्धि हासिल नहीं की, हालांकि वह मेरे बेटे की जीत सुनिश्चित करने के लिए दृढ़ थे।'

अथ कस्माद्धते क्षत्रे कर्मेदं कृतवानसौ द्रोणपुत्रो महेष्वासस्तन्मे शंसितुमर्हसि

Why did he perform this task after my son had been killed? After all, Droṇa's son is a great archer. You should tell me this.

Sañjaya replied: O descendant of the Kuru lineage! This was certainly because of terror and fright. Now, the Pārtha-s, the intelligent Keśava,

and Sātyaki were not present. That's why Droṇa's son could accomplish this deed. In their presence, even the lord of the Marut-s would have been unable to kill them.

और सात्यकि उपस्थित नहीं थे। इसीलिए द्रोण का पुत्र यह कार्य कर सका। उनकी उपस्थिति में मरुतराज भी उन्हें मारने में असमर्थ होते।

एतदीदृशकं वृत्तं राजन्सुप्तजने विभो ततो जनक्षयं कृत्वा पाण्डवानां महात्ययम् दिष्ट्या दिष्ट्येति चान्योन्यं समेत्योचुर्महारथाः

O king! O lord! And this kind of conduct was possible because the men were asleep. Having caused that extremely great carnage of men among the Pāṇḍava-s, those mahāratha-s met each other and exclaimed, "This was fortunate. It was good fortune."

हे राजा! हे भगवान! और इस प्रकार का आचरण इसलिए संभव हो सका क्योंकि वे लोग सो रहे थे। पांडवों के बीच उस अत्यंत महान नरसंहार का कारण बनने के बाद, उन महारथियों ने एक-दूसरे से मुलाकात की और कहा, "यह सौभाग्य था। यह सौभाग्य था।"

पर्यष्वजत्ततो द्रौणिस्ताभ्यां च प्रतिनन्दितः इदं हर्षाच्च सुमहदाददे वाक्यमुत्तमम्

Those two congratulated Droṇa's son and embraced him. In great delight, he spoke these supreme words.

उन दोनों ने द्रोण के पुत्र को बधाई दी और उसे गले लगा लिया। उन्होंने अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर ये परम वचन कहे।

पाञ्चाला निहताः सर्वे द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः सोमका मत्स्यशेषाश्च सर्वे विनिहता मया

"All the Pāñcāla-s have been slain and all of Draupadī's sons. The Somaka-s and all the remaining Mātsya-s have been slain by me.

"सभी पंचाल और द्रौपदी के सभी पुत्र मारे गए हैं। सोमक और शेष सभी मत्स्य मेरे द्वारा मारे गए हैं।"

इदानीं कृतकृत्याः स्म याम तत्रैव माचिरम् यदि जीवति नो राजा तस्मै शंसामहे प्रियम्

Having accomplished this deed, let us immediately go to the spot where the king is. If he is still alive, we will give him this pleasant news."
