Any encounter guided by good policy attains success. However, if both sides are equal, there is uncertainty. But equality between the two never happens.

If that is the case, why should we not adopt a policy to approach the enemy and destroy him like a river destroying a tree? We will cover our weaknesses and exploit those of the enemy.
यदि ऐसा है, तो हमें शत्रु के पास जाकर उसे उसी प्रकार नष्ट करने की नीति क्यों नहीं अपनानी चाहिए जैसे नदी वृक्ष को नष्ट कर देती है? हम अपनी कमजोरियों को छिपाएंगे और दुश्मन की कमजोरियों का फायदा उठाएंगे।
O bull among men! He alone enjoys eternal royal fortune, like the soul of all beings. But if he perishes, his forces perish.
हे मनुष्यों में बैल! वह अकेले ही सभी प्राणियों की आत्मा की तरह शाश्वत शाही भाग्य का आनंद लेता है। परन्तु यदि वह नष्ट हो जाता है, तो उसकी शक्तियाँ भी नष्ट हो जाती हैं।
Desiring to free our relatives, even if we are killed by his survivors after we have killed him in battle, we will attain heaven."
अपने सम्बन्धियों को मुक्त कराने की इच्छा से यदि युद्ध में उसे मारने के बाद उसके जीवित बचे लोगों द्वारा हम भी मारे जायें तो भी हमें स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होगी।”

कृष्ण कोऽयं जरासंधः किंवीर्यः किंपराक्रमः
यस्त्वां स्पृष्ट्वाग्निसदृशं न दग्धः शलभो यथा
Yudhiṣṭhira asked: "O Kṛṣṇā! Who is this Jarāsandha? What is his valour and his prowess that he has not been burnt up when he touched you, like a moth before a flame?"
युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा: "हे कृष्ण! यह जरासंध कौन है? उसकी वीरता और उसका पराक्रम क्या है कि वह आपको छूते ही उस प्रकार नहीं जल गया, जैसे लौ के सामने पतंगा जल जाता है?"

Kṛṣṇā replied: "O king! Listen to Jarāsandha's valour and prowess. Learn why he has been spared by us, though he has caused us displeasure in many ways.
कृष्ण ने उत्तर दिया: "हे राजा! जरासंध की वीरता और कौशल को सुनो। जानें कि उसने हमें कई तरीकों से नाराज होने के बावजूद क्यों छोड़ दिया है।

अक्षौहिणीनां तिसृणामासीत्समरदर्पितः
राजा बृहद्रथो नाम मगधाधिपतिः पतिः
There was a king named Bṛhadratha. He was the powerful ruler and lord of Māgadha. He was proud in battle and had three akṣauhiṇī-s.
बृहद्रथ नाम का एक राजा था। वह मगध का शक्तिशाली शासक और स्वामी था। वह युद्ध में गौरवान्वित था और उसके पास तीन अक्षौहिणीयाँ थीं।
though he performed many auspicious rites, oblations and sacrifices, so as to obtain a son. But the best of kings did not obtain a son to extend his lineage.
हालाँकि उन्होंने पुत्र प्राप्ति के लिए कई शुभ संस्कार, यज्ञ और यज्ञ किये। परंतु सर्वश्रेष्ठ राजाओं को अपना वंश बढ़ाने के लिए कोई पुत्र प्राप्त नहीं हुआ।
One day, he heard that Caṇḍakauśika, the son of the great-souled Kākṣīvat, descended from Gautama, had become tired of ascetic pursuits.

Roaming as he willed, he had come and had sought shelter under a tree. The king and his wives satisfied him with offerings of all kinds of jewels.
वह अपनी इच्छानुसार घूमता हुआ एक पेड़ के नीचे आश्रय माँगता हुआ आया था। राजा और उसकी पत्नियों ने उसे सभी प्रकार के रत्नों की भेंट देकर संतुष्ट किया।

तमब्रवीत्सत्यधृतिः सत्यवागृषिसत्तमः
परितुष्टोऽस्मि ते राजन्वरं वरय सुव्रत
That supreme among riṣi-s was always truthful and devoted to the truth. He spoke to the king thus. "O king! I am satisfied with you, you who are devoted to your vows. Ask for a boon."
ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ वह सदैव सत्यवादी और सत्य के प्रति समर्पित थे। उसने राजा से इस प्रकार बात की। "हे राजन! तुम जो अपने व्रत के प्रति समर्पित हो, मैं तुमसे संतुष्ट हूं। वर मांगो।"
Bṛhadratha and his wives bowed down before him. In a voice choked with tears of despair, since there was no prospect of setting eyes on a son,

किं वरेणाल्पभाग्यस्य किं राज्येनाप्रजस्य मे
Bṛhadratha said: "O illustrious lord! I am about to give up my kingdom and depart for the austerities of the forest. I am unfortunate. What will I do with a boon or with the kingdom?"
बृहद्रथ ने कहा: "हे महामहिम! मैं अपना राज्य त्याग कर जंगल में तपस्या के लिए प्रस्थान करने वाला हूं। मैं अभागा हूं। मैं वरदान या राज्य लेकर क्या करूंगा?"

Kṛṣṇā said: On hearing this, the sage, seated under the shade of a mango tree, controlled his senses and began to meditate.
कृष्ण ने कहा: यह सुनकर, ऋषि, एक आम के पेड़ की छाया के नीचे बैठे, अपनी इंद्रियों को नियंत्रित किया और ध्यान करना शुरू कर दिया।
O king! O immensely wise one! After some time, when the appropriate time arrived, the two queens gave birth to two half-bodies.
हे राजा! हे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान! कुछ समय बाद उचित समय आने पर दोनों रानियों ने दो आधे शरीरों को जन्म दिया।

एकाक्षिबाहुचरणे अर्धोदरमुखस्फिजे
दृष्ट्वा शरीरशकले प्रवेपाते उभे भृशम्
Each had one eye, one arm, one leg, half a stomach, half a face and half a buttock. At the sight of these half-bodies, the two of them were miserable and trembled.
प्रत्येक की एक आंख, एक हाथ, एक पैर, आधा पेट, आधा चेहरा और आधा नितंब था। इन आधे शरीरों को देखकर वे दोनों दुखी हो गए और कांपने लगे।

The anxious sisters consulted each other. In great misery, they abandoned the two half-bodies, though they had life in them.
चिंतित बहनों ने एक-दूसरे से सलाह की। बड़े दुःख में, उन्होंने दो आधे शरीरों को त्याग दिया, हालाँकि उनमें जीवन था।

The two midwives carefully wrapped up those imperfectly born half-bodies and left the inner quarters through a back gate. Discarding them, they returned in haste.
दोनों दाइयों ने सावधानी से उन अपूर्ण रूप से जन्मे आधे शरीरों को लपेटा और पीछे के गेट से भीतरी क्वार्टर से बाहर निकल गईं। उन्हें त्यागकर वे तेजी से लौट आये।

O tiger among men! There was a rākṣasa woman named Jarā and she noticed them, where they had been thrown at a crossroad. She lived on flesh and blood.
हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! जरा नाम की एक राक्षसी स्त्री थी और उसने उन पर ध्यान दिया, जहां उन्हें एक चौराहे पर फेंक दिया गया था। वह मांस और रक्त खाकर जीवित रहती थी।
On seeing them in that condition and on seeing the king, who was so desirous of obtaining a son, and also on seeing the strong child, the rākṣasa woman reflected,
उन्हें उस अवस्था में देखकर और पुत्र प्राप्ति की इतनी इच्छा रखने वाले राजा को देखकर तथा बलशाली बालक को देखकर राक्षसी ने विचार किया,
"I live in the kingdom of a king who desires to obtain a son. Therefore, I should not carry off this small child, like a strip of cloud hides the sun."
"मैं एक ऐसे राजा के राज्य में रहता हूँ जो पुत्र प्राप्ति की इच्छा रखता है। इसलिए, जिस तरह बादल की एक पट्टी सूर्य को छुपा लेती है, उसी प्रकार मुझे इस छोटे बच्चे को नहीं ले जाना चाहिए।"
Assuming human form, she spoke to the lord of men. The rākṣasa said, "O Bṛhadratha! This is your son. Accept him from me as a gift.
मानव रूप धारण करके उसने मनुष्यों के स्वामी से बात की। राक्षस ने कहा, "हे बृहद्रथ! यह तुम्हारा पुत्र है। इसे उपहार के रूप में मुझसे स्वीकार करो।"

तव पत्नीद्वये जातो द्विजातिवरशासनात्
धात्रीजनपरित्यक्तो मयायं परिरक्षितः
He was born in the wombs of your two wives, as a result of the boon granted by the brāhmaṇa. He was abandoned by the midwives, but has been saved by me."
वह ब्राह्मण द्वारा दिये गये वरदान के फलस्वरूप तुम्हारी दोनों पत्नियों के गर्भ से उत्पन्न हुआ था। उसे दाइयों ने छोड़ दिया था, लेकिन मेरे द्वारा उसे बचा लिया गया है।"
O supreme among those of the Bhārata lineage! At that, on obtaining the son, the beautiful daughters of the king of Kāśi sprinkled him with the milk that was gushing out.
हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! उस समय पुत्र प्राप्ति पर काशी के राजा की सुन्दर पुत्रियों ने उस पर दूध की धारा छिड़की।

ततः स राजा संहृष्टः सर्वं तदुपलभ्य च
अपृच्छन्नवहेमाभां राक्षसीं तामराक्षसीम्
Having seen all this and understood, the king was delighted. In human form, with a complexion like that of pure gold, the rākṣasa woman did not look like a rākṣasa at all. He asked,

"कमल के गर्भ के समान स्वर्णिम आप कौन हैं? आपने मुझे मेरा पुत्र दिया है। हे भाग्यशाली! आप मुझे देवी के समान दिखाई देती हैं। कृपया बोलें।"
