वैशंपायन उवाच तच्छ्रुत्वा विविधं तस्य राजर्षेः परिदेवितम् पुनर्नवीकृतः शोको गान्धार्या जनमेजय

Vaishampayana said: Having heard the various lamentations of that royal sage, O Janamejaya, the grief of Gandhari was renewed.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे जनमेजय, उन राजमुनि के विभिन्न विलापों को सुनकर गांधारी का दुःख फिर से ताज़ा हो गया।

कुन्त्या द्रुपदपुत्र्याश्च सुभद्रायास्तथैव च तासां च वरनारीणां वधूनां कौरवस्य ह

of Kunti, of Drupada's daughter, and of Subhadra, and of those other noble women, the brides of the Kauravas,

कुंती, द्रुपद की पुत्री, सुभद्रा, और अन्य कुलीन स्त्रियाँ, जो कौरवों की वधूएँ थीं,

पुत्रशोकसमाविष्टा गान्धारी त्विदमब्रवीत् श्वशुरं बद्धनयना देवी प्राञ्जलिरुत्थिता

Overcome with grief for her son, Gandhāri said this: The queen, with her eyes bound, stood up with folded hands to her father-in-law.

अपने पुत्र के दुःख से व्याकुल होकर गांधारी ने यह कहा: रानी आँखें बँधी हुई, अपने ससुर के सामने हाथ जोड़कर खड़ी हो गयी।

षोडशेमानि वर्षाणि गतानि मुनिपुंगव अस्य राज्ञो हतान्पुत्राञ्शोचतो न शमो विभो

O best of sages, sixteen years have passed. O Lord, the king is grieving for his slain sons and finds no peace.

हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ, सोलह वर्ष बीत गये। हे प्रभु, राजा अपने मारे गए पुत्रों के लिए शोक मना रहा है और उसे शांति नहीं मिल रही है।

पुत्रशोकसमाविष्टो निःश्वसन्ह्येष भूमिपः न शेते वसतीः सर्वा धृतराष्ट्रो महामुने

This king, overcome with grief for his son, is sighing. Dhritarashtra, the great sage, does not sleep at all.

यह राजा अपने पुत्र के दुःख से दुःखी होकर आहें भर रहा है। महान ऋषि धृतराष्ट्र बिल्कुल भी नहीं सोते हैं।

लोकानन्यान्समर्थोऽसि स्रष्टुं सर्वांस्तपोबलात् किमु लोकान्तरगतान्राज्ञो दर्शयितुं सुतान्

You are capable of creating all the other worlds by the power of your austerities. What to speak of showing the sons who have gone to the other world to the king?

आप अपनी तपस्या के बल से अन्य सभी लोकों की रचना करने में सक्षम हैं। परलोक सिधारे हुए पुत्रों को राजा को दिखाने की तो बात ही क्या?

इयं च द्रौपदी कृष्णा हतज्ञातिसुता भृशम् शोचत्यतीव साध्वी ते स्नुषाणां दयिता स्नुषा

And this Drupada's daughter, Krishna, whose kinsmen have been slain, is grieving deeply, your virtuous daughter-in-law, the beloved daughter-in-law of your sons.

और यह द्रुपद की पुत्री कृष्णा, जिसके सगे-संबंधी मारे गये हैं, अत्यंत शोक कर रही है, आपकी धर्मपरायण पुत्रवधू, आपके पुत्रों की प्रिय पुत्रवधू।

तथा कृष्णस्य भगिनी सुभद्रा भद्रभाषिणी सौभद्रवधसंतप्ता भृशं शोचति भामिनी

And Krishna's sister Subhadra, the eloquent, is deeply grieved by the death of Subhadra's son.

वहीं कृष्ण की बहन सुभद्रा, जो वाक्पटु हैं, सुभद्रा के बेटे की मौत से बेहद दुखी हैं।

इयं च भूरिश्रवसो भार्या परमदुःखिता भर्तृव्यसनशोकार्ता न शेते वसतीः प्रभो

And this wife of Bhuriśravas is extremely unhappy. She is tormented by grief over her husband's misfortune, and does not sleep, my lord.

और भूरिश्रवा की यह पत्नी अत्यंत दुखी है। वह अपने पति के दुर्भाग्य के दुःख से पीड़ित है और सो नहीं पाती, हे प्रभु!

यस्यास्तु श्वशुरो धीमान्बाह्लीकः स कुरूद्वहः निहतः सोमदत्तश्च पित्रा सह महारणे

Whose father-in-law was the wise Bahlika, the upholder of the Kurus, And who, together with his father, was slain in the great battle by Somadatta.

जिनके ससुर बुद्धिमान बाह्लीक, कौरवों के रक्षक थे, और जो अपने पिता के साथ सोमदत्त द्वारा महान युद्ध में मारे गए थे।

श्रीमच्चास्य महाबुद्धेः संग्रामेष्वपलायिनः पुत्रस्य ते पुत्रशतं निहतं यद्रणाजिरे

The son of the great-minded one, who never fled from battle, The hundred sons of your son were killed in the battle.

वह महामनस्वी पुत्र, जो युद्ध से कभी नहीं भागा, आपके पुत्र के सौ पुत्र युद्ध में मारे गये।

तस्य भार्याशतमिदं पुत्रशोकसमाहतम् पुनः पुनर्वर्धयानं शोकं राज्ञो ममैव च तेनारम्भेण महता मामुपास्ते महामुने

His hundred wives, struck by the grief of their sons, are again and again increasing the grief of me, the king, and of you. For that reason, the great sage is serving me with that great undertaking.

उनकी सौ पत्नियाँ अपने पुत्रों के दुःख से आहत होकर बार-बार मेरा, राजा का और आपका दुःख बढ़ा रही हैं। इसी कारण से, महान ऋषि उस महान उपक्रम के साथ मेरी सेवा कर रहे हैं।

ये च शूरा महात्मानः श्वशुरा मे महारथाः सोमदत्तप्रभृतयः का नु तेषां गतिः प्रभो

And my father-in-law, the great warrior Somadatta, and the others, what is their fate, O Lord?

और मेरे ससुर, महान योद्धा सोमदत्त और अन्य, हे भगवान, उनका भाग्य क्या है?

तव प्रसादाद्भगवन्विशोकोऽयं महीपतिः कुर्यात्कालमहं चैव कुन्ती चेयं वधूस्तव

By your grace, O Lord, this king shall be free from sorrow. May I and this bride of yours, Kunti, live long.

हे प्रभु, आपकी कृपा से यह राजा दुःख से मुक्त हो जायेगा। मैं और आपकी यह दुल्हन कुंती, दीर्घायु हों।

इत्युक्तवत्यां गान्धार्यां कुन्ती व्रतकृशानना प्रच्छन्नजातं पुत्रं तं सस्मारादित्यसंभवम्

When Gandhari had spoken thus, Kunti, pale from fasting, recalled her son born in secret from the sun.

जब गांधारी ने ऐसा कहा, तो उपवास से पीली हुई कुंती ने सूर्य से गुप्त रूप से जन्मे अपने पुत्र को याद किया।

तामृषिर्वरदो व्यासो दूरश्रवणदर्शनः अपश्यद्दुःखितां देवीं मातरं सव्यसाचिनः

The sage Vyasa, the bestower of boons, with far-reaching hearing and sight, saw the afflicted mother of the left-handed archer.

दूरगामी श्रवण और दृष्टि से वरदान देने वाले ऋषि व्यास ने बाएं हाथ के धनुर्धर की पीड़ित माँ को देखा।

तामुवाच ततो व्यासो यत्ते कार्यं विवक्षितम् तद्ब्रूहि त्वं महाप्राज्ञे यत्ते मनसि वर्तते

Then Vyasa said to her, "Tell me what you desire to do. O wise one, tell me what is in your mind."

तब व्यास ने उससे कहा, "मुझे बताओ कि तुम क्या करना चाहते हो। हे बुद्धिमान, मुझे बताओ कि तुम्हारे मन में क्या है।"

ततः कुन्ती श्वशुरयोः प्रणम्य शिरसा तदा उवाच वाक्यं सव्रीडं विवृण्वाना पुरातनम्

Then Kunti, bowing her head to her father-in-law and mother-in-law, spoke these words, bashfully revealing the past.

तब कुन्ती ने अपने सास-ससुर को सिर झुकाकर लज्जापूर्वक अतीत का खुलासा करते हुए ये शब्द कहे।
