वैशंपायन उवाच कुन्त्यास्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा पाण्डवा राजसत्तम व्रीडिताः संन्यवर्तन्त पाञ्चाल्या सहितानघाः

Vaishmapayana said: O best of kings, the Pandavas, the sinless ones, together with Panchali, were ashamed and withdrew on hearing Kunti's words.

वैश्मापायन ने कहा: हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ, कुंती की बातें सुनकर पांचाली सहित पापरहित पांडव लज्जित हो गए और पीछे हट गए।

ततः शब्दो महानासीत्सर्वेषामेव भारत अन्तःपुराणां रुदतां दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीं तथागताम्

Then there was a great sound of all, O descendant of Bharata, when they saw Kunti come in, weeping with the women of the inner apartments.

तब, हे भरत के वंशज, सभी लोगों ने बहुत जोर से आवाज की, जब उन्होंने कुंती को अंदर की महिलाओं के साथ रोते हुए अंदर आते देखा।

प्रदक्षिणमथावृत्य राजानं पाण्डवास्तदा अभिवाद्य न्यवर्तन्त पृथां तामनिवर्त्य वै

Having circumambulated the king, the Pandavas then bowed and departed, unable to turn back Pritha.

राजा की परिक्रमा करने के बाद, पांडव पृथा को वापस लौटाने में असमर्थ रहे, उन्हें प्रणाम किया और चले गए।

ततोऽब्रवीन्महाराजो धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः गान्धारीं विदुरं चैव समाभाष्य निगृह्य च

Then the great king Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika, spoke to Gandhari and Vidura, addressing and restraining them.

तब अंबिका के पुत्र महान राजा धृतराष्ट्र ने गांधारी और विदुर से बात की, उन्हें संबोधित किया और उन्हें रोका।

युधिष्ठिरस्य जननी देवी साधु निवर्त्यताम् यथा युधिष्ठिरः प्राह तत्सर्वं सत्यमेव हि

Let the queen, the mother of Yudhishthira, be well received. As Yudhishthira has said, all that is indeed true.

युधिष्ठिर की माता रानी का खूब सत्कार हो। जैसा कि युधिष्ठिर ने कहा है, वह सब सचमुच सत्य है।

पुत्रैश्वर्यं महदिदमपास्य च महाफलम् का नु गच्छेद्वनं दुर्गं पुत्रानुत्सृज्य मूढवत्

"Having abandoned this great prosperity of sons, which is of great fruit, Who, like a fool, would go to the difficult forest, abandoning her sons?"

"पुत्रों की इस महान समृद्धि को, जो महान फल देने वाली है, त्याग कर कौन मूर्ख की तरह अपने पुत्रों को त्याग कर कठिन वन में जाएगी?"

राज्यस्थया तपस्तप्तं दानं दत्तं व्रतं कृतम् अनया शक्यमद्येह श्रूयतां च वचो मम

She who is established in the kingdom has performed austerities, given gifts, and observed vows. By her, it is possible to hear my words today.

वह जो राज्य में स्थापित है, उसने तपस्या की है, उपहार दिए हैं और व्रत रखे हैं। उन्हीं के द्वारा आज मेरी बातें सुनना संभव हुआ।

गान्धारि परितुष्टोऽस्मि वध्वाः शुश्रूषणेन वै तस्मात्त्वमेनां धर्मज्ञे समनुज्ञातुमर्हसि

O Gandhari, I am pleased with your service to your daughter-in-law. Therefore, O knower of dharma, you should give your consent to her.

हे गांधारी, मैं अपनी पुत्रवधू की सेवा से प्रसन्न हूं। इसलिए, हे धर्म के ज्ञाता, आपको उसे अपनी सहमति देनी चाहिए।

इत्युक्ता सौबलेयी तु राज्ञा कुन्तीमुवाच ह तत्सर्वं राजवचनं स्वं च वाक्यं विशेषवत्

Thus addressed by the king, Subala's daughter spoke to Kunti, that entire speech of the king and her own words in particular.

राजा के इस प्रकार सम्बोधित होने पर सुबाला की कन्या ने कुन्ती से राजा की वह सारी बात और विशेषतया अपनी बात कही।

न च सा वनवासाय देवीं कृतमतिं तदा शक्नोत्युपावर्तयितुं कुन्तीं धर्मपरां सतीम्

And she was not able to turn back Kunti, who was devoted to Dharma, from her resolve to live in the forest.

और धर्म के प्रति समर्पित कुन्ती को वह वन में रहने के संकल्प से पीछे नहीं हटा सकी।

तस्यास्तु तं स्थिरं ज्ञात्वा व्यवसायं कुरुस्त्रियः निवृत्तांश्च कुरुश्रेष्ठान्दृष्ट्वा प्ररुरुदुस्तदा

Knowing that he was firm in his resolve, the women of Kuru and seeing the best of the Kurus turn back, wept then.

यह जानकर कि वह अपने निश्चय पर दृढ़ है, कुरु की स्त्रियाँ और सर्वश्रेष्ठ कौरवों को वापस लौटते देखकर रो पड़ीं।

उपावृत्तेषु पार्थेषु सर्वेष्वन्तःपुरेषु च ययौ राजा महाप्राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रो वनं तदा

When all the Pāṇḍavas and all the women of the harem had returned, the very wise King Dhṛtarāṣṭra went to the forest.

जब सभी पांडव और हरम की सभी महिलाएं लौट आईं, तो बहुत बुद्धिमान राजा धृतराष्ट्र जंगल में चले गए।

पाण्डवा अपि दीनास्ते दुःखशोकपरायणाः यानैः स्त्रीसहिताः सर्वे पुरं प्रविविशुस्तदा

The Pandavas, too, were distressed, overcome with grief and sorrow. All of them, together with the women, entered the city in vehicles.

पांडव भी व्यथित थे, शोक और दुःख से उबरे हुए थे। महिलाओं समेत ये सभी वाहनों से शहर में दाखिल हुए।

तदहृष्टमिवाकूजं गतोत्सवमिवाभवत् नगरं हास्तिनपुरं सस्त्रीवृद्धकुमारकम्

The city of Hastinapura, with its women, elders, and children, became as if joyful, as if celebrating a festival.

हस्तिनापुर नगर अपनी स्त्रियों, बूढ़ों और बच्चों सहित मानो हर्षित हो गया, मानो कोई उत्सव मना रहा हो।

सर्वे चासन्निरुत्साहाः पाण्डवा जातमन्यवः कुन्त्या हीनाः सुदुःखार्ता वत्सा इव विनाकृताः

All the Pandavas were discouraged and angry. Separated from Kunti, they were extremely miserable, like calves separated from their mother.

सभी पांडव निराश और क्रोधित थे। कुन्ती से अलग होकर वे अत्यंत दुःखी थे, जैसे माँ से बिछुड़े हुए बछड़े।

धृतराष्ट्रस्तु तेनाह्ना गत्वा सुमहदन्तरम् ततो भागीरथीतीरे निवासमकरोत्प्रभुः

Dhritarashtra, having gone a great distance that day, then made his abode on the banks of the Bhagirathi.

धृतराष्ट्र ने उस दिन बहुत दूर जाकर भागीरथी के तट पर अपना निवास स्थान बनाया।

प्रादुष्कृता यथान्यायमग्नयो वेदपारगैः व्यराजन्त द्विजश्रेष्ठैस्तत्र तत्र तपोधनैः प्रादुष्कृताग्निरभवत्स च वृद्धो नराधिपः

The fires were kindled according to the rules by those who had mastered the Vedas. They shone here and there with the best of Brahmins, the wealthy in austerities. The king, who had kindled the fire, became old.

वेदों में पारंगत लोगों द्वारा नियमानुसार अग्नि प्रज्वलित की जाती थी। वे तपस्या में धनी श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों के साथ इधर-उधर चमकते थे। जिस राजा ने अग्नि जलाई थी वह बूढ़ा हो गया।

स राजाग्नीन्पर्युपास्य हुत्वा च विधिवत्तदा संध्यागतं सहस्रांशुमुपातिष्ठत भारत

Having worshipped the sacrificial fires and performed the rites, O descendant of Bharata, he then stood up to greet the sun as it set.

हे भरत के वंशज, यज्ञ अग्नि की पूजा और अनुष्ठान करने के बाद, वह सूर्यास्त के समय सूर्य का स्वागत करने के लिए खड़े हुए।

विदुरः संजयश्चैव राज्ञः शय्यां कुशैस्ततः चक्रतुः कुरुवीरस्य गान्धार्याश्चाविदूरतः

Vidura and Sanjaya then spread kuśa grass for the king's bed, and not far from him, for Gandhari, the hero of the Kurus.

तब विदुर और संजय ने राजा के बिस्तर के लिए और उससे कुछ ही दूरी पर कौरवों की वीर गांधारी के लिए कुश घास बिछाई।

गान्धार्याः संनिकर्षे तु निषसाद कुशेष्वथ युधिष्ठिरस्य जननी कुन्ती साधुव्रते स्थिता

In the vicinity of Gandhari, she sat down on kuśa grass. Kunti, the mother of Yudhishthira, was established in good vows.

गांधारी के समीप वह कुश घास पर बैठ गईं। युधिष्ठिर की माता कुन्ती उत्तम व्रत में स्थित थीं।

तेषां संश्रवणे चापि निषेदुर्विदुरादयः याजकाश्च यथोद्देशं द्विजा ये चानुयायिनः

And Vidura and others sat down to hear them. And the priests and the twice-born who were followers, according to their designation,

और विदुर तथा अन्य लोग उनकी बात सुनने के लिये बैठ गये। और याजक और द्विज जो अनुयायी थे, अपके पद के अनुसार,

प्राधीतद्विजमुख्या सा संप्रज्वालितपावका बभूव तेषां रजनी ब्राह्मीव प्रीतिवर्धनी

She, the chief of the learned Brahmins, having recited the sacred texts, and having kindled the sacred fire, became to them like the night of Brahma, increasing their joy.

वह, विद्वान ब्राह्मणों की मुखिया, पवित्र ग्रंथों का पाठ करके और पवित्र अग्नि जलाकर, उनके लिए ब्रह्मा की रात की तरह बन गई, जिससे उनका आनंद बढ़ गया।

ततो रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां कृतपूर्वाह्णिकक्रियाः हुत्वाग्निं विधिवत्सर्वे प्रययुस्ते यथाक्रमम् उदङ्मुखा निरीक्षन्त उपवासपरायणाः

Then, when the night had passed, having performed the morning rites, having offered fire according to the prescribed method, they all went according to their order, facing north, gazing, intent on fasting.

फिर जब रात बीत गई, तो सबेरे सबेरे कर्म करके विधि के अनुसार अग्नि होम करके, व्रत का निश्चय करके, उत्तर की ओर मुख करके, दृष्टि करके, अपनी-अपनी आज्ञा के अनुसार चले।

स तेषामतिदुःखोऽभून्निवासः प्रथमेऽहनि शोचतां शोच्यमानानां पौरजानपदैर्जनैः

That first day was very painful for them, as they were grieved by the citizens and country people who were grieving.

वह पहला दिन उनके लिए बहुत कष्टकारी था, क्योंकि वे शोक मना रहे नागरिकों और देश के लोगों से बहुत दुःखी थे।
