वैशंपायन उवाच वनं गते कौरवेन्द्रे दुःखशोकसमाहताः बभूवुः पाण्डवा राजन्मातृशोकेन चार्दिताः

Vaishampayana said: When the lord of the Kurus had gone to the forest, the Pandavas were overcome with grief and sorrow, O king, and afflicted with grief for their mother.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजन, जब कौरवों के स्वामी वन में चले गए थे, तब पांडव शोक और दुःख से पीड़ित थे और अपनी माँ के दुःख से पीड़ित थे।

तथा पौरजनः सर्वः शोचन्नास्ते जनाधिपम् कुर्वाणाश्च कथास्तत्र ब्राह्मणा नृपतिं प्रति

And all the citizens, grieving, were sitting near the lord of men. And the Brahmanas were telling stories about the king.

और सब नगरवासी शोक करते हुए मनुष्यों के प्रभु के पास बैठे थे। और ब्राह्मण राजा के बारे में कहानियाँ सुना रहे थे।

कथं नु राजा वृद्धः स वने वसति निर्जने गान्धारी च महाभागा सा च कुन्ती पृथा कथम्

How does the aged king live in the desolate forest? And the noble Gandhari and Kunti-Pritha, how are they?

वृद्ध राजा निर्जन वन में कैसे रहता है? और महान गांधारी और कुंती-पृथा, वे कैसे हैं?

सुखार्हः स हि राजर्षिर्न सुखं तन्महावनम् किमवस्थः समासाद्य प्रज्ञाचक्षुर्हतात्मजः

For he is a royal sage worthy of happiness, and that great forest is not happy. What state was he in when he reached it, the one whose eyes of wisdom were destroyed by his son?

क्योंकि वह सुख के योग्य राजमुनि है, और वह महान वन सुखी नहीं है। जब वह वहां पहुंचा तो वह किस अवस्था में था, जिसकी ज्ञान की आंखें उसके बेटे ने नष्ट कर दी थीं?

सुदुष्करं कृतवती कुन्ती पुत्रानपश्यती राज्यश्रियं परित्यज्य वनवासमरोचयत्

Kunti, not seeing her sons, did what was extremely difficult. She abandoned the glory of the kingdom and desired to live in the forest.

कुंती ने अपने पुत्रों को न देखकर वह कर दिखाया जो अत्यंत कठिन था। उसने राज्य का वैभव त्याग दिया और जंगल में रहना चाहा।

विदुरः किमवस्थश्च भ्रातुः शुश्रूषुरात्मवान् स च गावल्गणिर्धीमान्भर्तृपिण्डानुपालकः

What was the state of Vidura, who was devoted to his brother and self-controlled? And that wise son of Gāvaḍha, who was the protector of his master's food.

अपने भाई के प्रति समर्पित और संयमी विदुर की स्थिति क्या थी? और गावध का वह बुद्धिमान पुत्र, जो अपने स्वामी के भोजन का रक्षक था।

आकुमारं च पौरास्ते चिन्ताशोकसमाहताः तत्र तत्र कथाश्चक्रुः समासाद्य परस्परम्

The citizens, along with the prince, were struck by sorrow and anxiety, and in various places they held conversations with each other.

राजकुमार सहित नागरिक दुःख और चिंता से ग्रस्त हो गए और जगह-जगह वे एक-दूसरे से बातचीत करने लगे।

पाण्डवाश्चैव ते सर्वे भृशं शोकपरायणाः शोचन्तो मातरं वृद्धामूषुर्नातिचिरं पुरे

And all the Pandavas were deeply immersed in grief. Mourning their aged mother, they stayed in the city for not very long.

और सभी पांडव बहुत दुःख में डूब गये। अपनी वृद्ध माँ के शोक में वे बहुत अधिक समय तक शहर में नहीं रहे।

तथैव पितरं वृद्धं हतपुत्रं जनेश्वरम् गान्धारीं च महाभागां विदुरं च महामतिम्

and the aged father, the lord of men, whose son was slain, and the highly fortunate Gandhari, and the very wise Vidura,

और वृद्ध पिता, मनुष्यों के स्वामी, जिनका पुत्र मारा गया था, और अत्यंत भाग्यशाली गांधारी, और अत्यंत बुद्धिमान विदुर,

नैषां बभूव संप्रीतिस्तान्विचिन्तयतां तदा न राज्ये न च नारीषु न वेदाध्ययने तथा

They did not find any pleasure in thinking about them. They did not find any pleasure in the kingdom, or in women, or in studying the Vedas.

उनके बारे में सोचने में उन्हें कोई खुशी नहीं मिलती थी. उन्हें न राज्य में, न स्त्रियों में, न वेदों के अध्ययन में कोई सुख मिला।

परं निर्वेदमगमंश्चिन्तयन्तो नराधिपम् तच्च ज्ञातिवधं घोरं संस्मरन्तः पुनः पुनः

Thinking of the king, I became extremely distressed, And remembering again and again that terrible slaughter of my relatives,

राजा का स्मरण करके मैं अत्यन्त दुःखी हो गया और बार-बार अपने सम्बन्धियों के उस भयानक वध को स्मरण करके कहने लगा।

अभिमन्योश्च बालस्य विनाशं रणमूर्धनि कर्णस्य च महाबाहोः संग्रामेष्वपलायिनः

The death of the young Abhimanyu on the battlefield, and of the mighty-armed Karna, who never fled from battle,

युद्ध के मैदान में युवा अभिमन्यु की मृत्यु, और महाबाहु कर्ण की, जो युद्ध से कभी नहीं भागा,

तथैव द्रौपदेयानामन्येषां सुहृदामपि वधं संस्मृत्य ते वीरा नातिप्रमनसोऽभवन्

Similarly, the sons of Drupada and other friends also remembered their deaths and were not very pleased.

इसी प्रकार द्रुपद के पुत्रों तथा अन्य मित्रों को भी अपनी मृत्यु का स्मरण हो आया और वे अधिक प्रसन्न नहीं हुए।

हतप्रवीरां पृथिवीं हतरत्नां च भारत सदैव चिन्तयन्तस्ते न निद्रामुपलेभिरे

O descendant of the Bharata lineage, they thought of the earth bereft of its heroes and jewels and could not sleep.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज, वे पृथ्वी को अपने वीरों और रत्नों से रहित समझ रहे थे और सो नहीं पा रहे थे।

द्रौपदी हतपुत्रा च सुभद्रा चैव भामिनी नातिप्रीतियुते देव्यौ तदास्तामप्रहृष्टवत्

Draupadi, whose sons were killed, and the radiant Subhadra, the two queens, were not very happy, and they remained without joy.

द्रौपदी, जिनके पुत्र मारे गए थे, और तेजस्वी सुभद्रा, दोनों रानियाँ, बहुत खुश नहीं थीं, और वे आनंदहीन रहीं।

वैराट्यास्तु सुतं दृष्ट्वा पितरं ते परिक्षितम् धारयन्ति स्म ते प्राणांस्तव पूर्वपितामहाः

Seeing the son of Virāṭa, your father Parikshit, Your ancestors are sustaining their lives.

आपके पिता विराट के पुत्र परीक्षित को देखकर आपके पूर्वज अपना जीवन निर्वाह कर रहे हैं।
