वैशंपायन उवाच एवमुक्त्वा तु गान्धारी कुरूणामाविकर्तनम् अपश्यत्तत्र तिष्ठन्ती सर्वं दिव्येन चक्षुषा

Vaiśampāyana said: Having said this about the destruction of the Kuru-s, with her divine eyesight Gāndhārī saw everything there.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: कुरु-वंश के विनाश के बारे में ऐसा कहने के बाद, गांधारी ने अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि से वहां सब कुछ देखा।

पतिव्रता महाभागा समानव्रतचारिणी उग्रेण तपसा युक्ता सततं सत्यवादिनी

She was immensely fortunate and was devoted to her husband. She was his equal in observing vows. She was always engaged in fierce austerities and was truthful.

वह अत्यंत भाग्यशाली थी और अपने पति के प्रति समर्पित थी। व्रत पालन में वह उनके बराबर थी। वह सदैव घोर तपस्या में लगी रहती थी और सत्यवादी थी।

वरदानेन कृष्णस्य महर्षेः पुण्यकर्मणः दिव्यज्ञानबलोपेता विविधं पर्यदेवयत्

Maharṣi Kṛṣṇā, the performer of auspicious deeds, had granted her many different kinds of boons, including the strength of divine knowledge.

शुभ कर्मों के कर्ता महर्षि कृष्ण ने उसे दिव्य ज्ञान की शक्ति सहित कई प्रकार के वरदान दिए थे।

ददर्श सा बुद्धिमती दूरादपि यथान्तिके रणाजिरं नृवीराणामद्भुतं लोमहर्षणम्

The intelligent one could see things that were far away and not near, such as the bravest of men lying down in the field of battle. This made the body hair stand up.

बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति उन चीज़ों को देख सकता था जो बहुत दूर थीं और निकट नहीं थीं, जैसे कि युद्ध के मैदान में लेटे हुए सबसे बहादुर व्यक्ति। इससे शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े हो गए।

अस्थिकेशपरिस्तीर्णं शोणितौघपरिप्लुतम् शरीरैर्बहुसाहस्रैर्विनिकीर्णं समन्ततः

It was strewn with bones and hair and there were torrents of blood. Many thousands of bodies were scattered around in every direction.

वह हड्डियों और बालों से बिखरा हुआ था और खून की धारें बह रही थीं। कई हज़ार शव हर दिशा में बिखरे हुए थे।

गजाश्वरथयोधानामावृतं रुधिराविलैः शरीरैरशिरस्कैश्च विदेहैश्च शिरोगणैः

There were elephants, horses, chariots and warriors, completely covered in blood. There were bodies without heads and a large number of heads without bodies.

वहाँ हाथी, घोड़े, रथ और योद्धा थे, जो पूरी तरह से खून से लथपथ थे। वहाँ बिना सिर के शव थे और बड़ी संख्या में बिना शरीर के सिर थे।

गजाश्वनरवीराणां निःसत्त्वैरभिसंवृतम् सृगालबडकाकोलकङ्ककाकनिषेवितम्

It was strewn with elephants, horses and the bravest of men, deprived of their lives. The place was populated by jackals, wild crows, ravens, herons and crows.

यह हाथियों, घोड़ों और अपने जीवन से वंचित सबसे बहादुर लोगों से भरा हुआ था। वह स्थान सियार, जंगली कौवे, कौवे, बगुले और कौवों से आबाद था।

रक्षसां पुरुषादानां मोदनं कुरराकुलम् अशिवाभिः शिवाभिश्च नादितं गृध्रसेवितम्

It was full of rākṣasa-s, maneaters and delighted ospreys. Inauspicious jackals howled and it was populated by vultures.

Dhṛtarāṣṭra, lord of the earth, obtained Vyāsa's permission. With all the sons of Pāṇḍu, with Yudhiṣṭhira at their head,

पृथ्वी के स्वामी धृतराष्ट्र ने व्यास की अनुमति प्राप्त की। पांडु के सभी पुत्रों के साथ, युधिष्ठिर के साथ, उनके सिर पर,

वासुदेवं पुरस्कृत्य हतबन्धुं च पार्थिवम् कुरुस्त्रियः समासाद्य जग्मुरायोधनं प्रति

with Vāsudeva and the king who had lost his relatives leading the way, and assembling all the Kuru women, he went to the field of battle.

वासुदेव और अपने रिश्तेदारों को खोने वाले राजा को आगे करके और सभी कुरु महिलाओं को इकट्ठा करके, वह युद्ध के मैदान में गए।

समासाद्य कुरुक्षेत्रं ताः स्त्रियो निहतेश्वराः अपश्यन्त हतांस्तत्र पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄन्पतीन्

The women, who had lost their lords, approached Kurukṣetra. They saw their slain sons, brothers, fathers and husbands there.

जो स्त्रियाँ अपने स्वामी को खो चुकी थीं, वे कुरूक्षेत्र पहुँचीं। उन्होंने वहां अपने मारे गये पुत्रों, भाइयों, पिताओं और पतियों को देखा।

क्रव्यादैर्भक्ष्यमाणान्वै गोमायुबडवायसैः भूतैः पिशाचै रक्षोभिर्विविधैश्च निशाचरैः

They were being devoured by predatory beasts there, by jackals, wild crows, crows, demons, piśāca-s, rākṣasa-s and many kinds of beings that roam around in the night.

वहां हिंसक जानवर, सियार, जंगली कौवे, कौवे, राक्षस, पिशाच, राक्षस और रात में घूमने वाले कई प्रकार के जीव उन्हें खा रहे थे।

रुद्राक्रीडनिभं दृष्ट्वा तदा विशसनं स्त्रियः महार्हेभ्योऽथ यानेभ्यो विक्रोशन्त्यो निपेतिरे

The women saw that place, which was like Rudra's sporting ground. As they descended from their extremely expensive vehicles, they screamed.

स्त्रियों ने वह स्थान देखा, जो रुद्र की क्रीड़ास्थली के समान था। जैसे ही वे अपनी बेहद महंगी गाड़ियों से उतरे, उनकी चीख निकल गई।

अदृष्टपूर्वं पश्यन्त्यो दुःखार्ता भरतस्त्रियः शरीरेष्वस्खलन्नन्या न्यपतंश्चापरा भुवि

The women of the Bhārata lineage were miserable and saw a sight that they had not seen earlier. Some roamed around amidst the bodies.

भरत वंश की स्त्रियाँ दुखी थीं और उन्होंने ऐसा दृश्य देखा जो उन्होंने पहले नहीं देखा था। कुछ लोग शवों के बीच इधर-उधर घूमते रहे।

श्रान्तानां चाप्यनाथानां नासीत्काचन चेतना पाञ्चालकुरुयोषाणां कृपणं तदभून्महत्

Others fell down on the ground. They were exhausted and without their protectors. Some lost their senses. The women of the Pāñcāla and Kuru lineages were extremely miserable.

अन्य लोग जमीन पर गिर पड़े। वे थक गये थे और उनके संरक्षक नहीं थे। कुछ के होश उड़ गए. पंचाल और कुरु वंश की स्त्रियाँ अत्यंत दयनीय थीं।

दुःखोपहतचित्ताभिः समन्तादनुनादितम् दृष्ट्वायोधनमत्युग्रं धर्मज्ञा सुबलात्मजा

Their minds were numb because of the sorrow, and in every direction, they screamed. Subala's daughter was knowledgeable about dharma. She looked at that terrible field of battle.

दुःख के कारण उनका मन सुन्न हो गया और वे चारों ओर चिल्लाने लगे। सुबाला की पुत्री धर्म की ज्ञाता थी। उसने युद्ध के उस भयानक क्षेत्र को देखा।

ततः सा पुण्डरीकाक्षमामन्त्र्य पुरुषोत्तमम् कुरूणां वैशसं दृष्ट्वा दुःखाद्वचनमब्रवीत्

Having seen the destruction of the Kuru-s, she approached Puṇḍarīkākṣa Puruṣottama and spoke these sorrowful words.

कौरवों का विनाश देखकर वह पुण्डरीकाक्ष पुरूषोत्तम के पास पहुंची और ये दुःख भरे शब्द कहे।

पश्यैताः पुण्डरीकाक्ष स्नुषा मे निहतेश्वराः प्रकीर्णकेशाः क्रोशन्तीः कुररीरिव माधव

O Puṇḍarīkākṣa! Look at these daughters-in-law, whose lords have been slain. O Mādhava! Their hair is dishevelled and they are shrieking like female ospreys.

हे पुण्डरीकाक्ष! इन बहुओं को देखो, जिनके स्वामी मारे गये हैं। हे माधव! उनके बाल बिखरे हुए हैं और वे मादा ओस्प्रे की तरह चिल्ला रही हैं।

अमूस्त्वभिसमागम्य स्मरन्त्यो भरतर्षभान् पृथगेवाभ्यधावन्त पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄन्पतीन्

They arrived together, remembering the bulls among the Bhārata lineage. They are running around separately now, after their sons, brothers, fathers and husbands.

वे भरत वंश के बैलों को याद करते हुए एक साथ पहुंचे। वे अब अपने बेटों, भाइयों, पिताओं और पतियों के पीछे अलग-अलग घूम रहे हैं।

वीरसूभिर्महाबाहो हतपुत्राभिरावृतम् क्वचिच्च वीरपत्नीभिर्हतवीराभिराकुलम्

O mighty-armed one! These are the mothers of heroes and their sons have been killed. Some are the wives of heroes and the brave ones have been killed.

हे महाबाहु! ये वीरों की माताएं हैं और इनके पुत्र मारे गये हैं। कुछ वीरों की पत्नियाँ हैं और वीर मारे गये हैं।

शोभितं पुरुषव्याघ्रैर्भीष्मकर्णाभिमन्युभिः द्रोणद्रुपदशल्यैश्च ज्वलद्भिरिव पावकैः

The place is beautiful with those tigers among men, Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Abhimanyu, Droṇa, Drupada and Śalya. They were like blazing fires.

यह स्थान भीष्म, कर्ण, अभिमन्यु, द्रोण, द्रुपद और शल्य जैसे मनुष्यों से युक्त बाघों से सुन्दर है। वे धधकती हुई आग के समान थे।

काञ्चनैः कवचैर्निष्कैर्मणिभिश्च महात्मनाम् अङ्गदैर्हस्तकेयूरैः स्रग्भिश्च समलंकृतम्

The great-souled ones wore golden armour, decorated with molten gold and gems. They wore armlets and bracelets on their arms. They were ornamented with garlands.

महात्मा लोग सुनहरे कवच पहनते थे, पिघले हुए सोने और रत्नों से सजाए जाते थे। वे अपनी बांहों में बाजूबंद और कंगन पहनते थे। उन्हें मालाओं से अलंकृत किया गया।

वीरबाहुविसृष्टाभिः शक्तिभिः परिघैरपि खड्गैश्च विमलैस्तीक्ष्णैः सशरैश्च शरासनैः

Spears, clubs, sparkling and sharp swords, arrows and bows were released from the arms of the brave ones.

वीरों की भुजाओं से भाले, लाठियाँ, चमचमाती और तीखी तलवारें, तीर-धनुष छूट गये।

क्रव्यादसंघैर्मुदितैस्तिष्ठद्भिः सहितैः क्वचित् क्वचिदाक्रीडमानैश्च शयानैरपरैः क्वचित्

Large numbers of delighted carnivorous beasts have assembled in some places. In some places, they are sporting. In others, they are lying down.

कुछ स्थानों पर बड़ी संख्या में प्रसन्न मांसाहारी जानवर इकट्ठे हो गए हैं। कुछ जगहों पर वे खेल रहे हैं. दूसरों में वे लेटे हुए हैं।

एतदेवंविधं वीर संपश्यायोधनं विभो पश्यमाना च दह्यामि शोकेनाहं जनार्दन

O lord! O brave one! Behold. That is how the field of battle looks. O Janārdana! As I look at it, I am tormented by grief.

हे भगवान! हे वीर! देखो. युद्ध का मैदान ऐसा ही दिखता है। हे जनार्दन! जैसे ही मैं इसे देखता हूं, मैं दुःख से परेशान हो जाता हूं।

पाञ्चालानां कुरूणां च विनाशं मधुसूदन पञ्चानामिव भूतानां नाहं वधमचिन्तयम्

O Madhusūdana! The Pāñcāla-s and the Kuru-s were like the five elements. I never thought that they would be destroyed, or that they would be killed.

हे मधुसूदन! पंचाल और कुरु पांच तत्वों की तरह थे। मैंने कभी नहीं सोचा था कि वे नष्ट हो जायेंगे, या वे मारे जायेंगे।

तान्सुपर्णाश्च गृध्राश्च निष्कर्षन्त्यसृगुक्षितान् निगृह्य कवचेषूग्रा भक्षयन्ति सहस्रशः

Thousands of eagles and vultures are tearing apart the best of armour, and dragging and devouring the mangled bodies.

हजारों चील और गिद्ध अच्छे से अच्छे कवच को तोड़ रहे हैं और क्षत-विक्षत शवों को खींचकर खा रहे हैं।

जयद्रथस्य कर्णस्य तथैव द्रोणभीष्मयोः अभिमन्योर्विनाशं च कश्चिन्तयितुमर्हति

Who could have thought of the destruction of Jayadratha, Karṇa, Droṇa, Bhīṣma and Abhimanyu?

जयद्रथ, कर्ण, द्रोण, भीष्म और अभिमन्यु के विनाश के बारे में कौन सोच सकता था?

अवध्यकल्पान्निहतान्दृष्ट्वाहं मधुसूदन गृध्रकङ्कबडश्येनश्वसृगालादनीकृतान्

O Madhusūdana! They were regarded as those who could not be killed. I see them slain now. They are being devoured by vultures, herons, wild crows, hawks, dogs and jackals.

हे मधुसूदन! उन्हें ऐसा माना जाता था जिन्हें मारा नहीं जा सकता था। अब मैं उन्हें मारा हुआ देख रहा हूँ। उन्हें गिद्ध, बगुले, जंगली कौवे, बाज, कुत्ते और सियार खा रहे हैं।

अमर्षवशमापन्नान्दुर्योधनवशे स्थितान् पश्येमान्पुरुषव्याघ्रान्संशान्तान्पावकानिव

Those wrathful ones were stationed under Duryodhana's command. Behold those tigers among men now. They are like fires that have been pacified.

वे क्रोधी लोग दुर्योधन की आज्ञा में तैनात थे। अब मनुष्यों के बीच उन बाघों को देखो। वे उस आग की तरह हैं जिसे शांत कर दिया गया है।

शयनान्युचिताः सर्वे मृदूनि विमलानि च विपन्नास्तेऽद्य वसुधां विवृतामधिशेरते

All of them deserved to lie down on soft and clean beds. They have been destroyed now and are lying down on the bare ground.

वे सभी मुलायम और साफ बिस्तरों पर लेटने के पात्र थे। वे अब नष्ट हो गये हैं और नंगी ज़मीन पर पड़े हैं।

बन्दिभिः सततं काले स्तुवद्भिरभिनन्दिताः शिवानामशिवा घोराः शृण्वन्ति विविधा गिरः

At the appropriate time, they were always praised by bards. They are now hearing the many horrible and inauspicious howls of jackals.

उचित समय पर, भाटों द्वारा सदैव उनकी प्रशंसा की जाती थी। अब वे सियारों की अनेक भयानक और अशुभ चीखें सुन रहे हैं।

ये पुरा शेरते वीराः शयनेषु यशस्विनः चन्दनागुरुदिग्धाङ्गास्तेऽद्य पांसुषु शेरते

Those illustrious and brave ones used to lie down on beds earlier. Their limbs used to be smeared with the paste of sandalwood and aloe. They are now lying down in dust.

वे यशस्वी और शूरवीर पहले शय्या पर पड़े रहते थे। उनके अंगों पर चंदन और घृत का लेप लगा रहता था। वे अब धूल में लेटे हुए हैं।

तेषामाभरणान्येते गृध्रगोमायुवायसाः आक्षिपन्त्यशिवा घोरा विनदन्तः पुनः पुनः

Vultures, jackals and crows are tearing away their ornaments. They are repeatedly emitting inauspicious and hideous howls.

गिद्ध, सियार और कौवे उनके आभूषण नोंच रहे हैं। वे बार-बार अशुभ एवं भयानक चीखें निकाल रहे हैं।

चापानि विशिखान्पीतान्निस्त्रिंशान्विमला गदाः युद्धाभिमानिनः प्रीता जीवन्त इव बिभ्रति

There are bows, arrows, yellow swords and sparkling clubs. They were cheerful and prided themselves on fighting. They are radiant, as if they are still alive.

वहाँ धनुष, बाण, पीली तलवारें और चमचमाती गदाएँ हैं। वे प्रसन्नचित्त थे और लड़ने पर गर्व करते थे। वे दीप्तिमान हैं, मानो वे अभी भी जीवित हों।

सुरूपवर्णा बहवः क्रव्यादैरवघट्टिताः ऋषभप्रतिरूपाक्षाः शेरते हरितस्रजः

There were many who were extremely handsome, but have been torn apart by carnivorous beasts now. Some possessed eyes like bulls and are lying down, wearing golden garlands.

ऐसे बहुत से लोग थे जो अत्यंत सुन्दर थे, परन्तु अब मांसाहारी जानवरों ने उन्हें नोच डाला है। कुछ की बैल जैसी आँखें हैं और वे सोने की मालाएँ पहने हुए लेटे हुए हैं।

अपरे पुनरालिङ्ग्य गदाः परिघबाहवः शेरतेऽभिमुखाः शूरा दयिता इव योषितः

Others, with arms like bludgeons, are still holding their clubs. The brave ones are lying down facing them, like women along their beloveds.

अन्य लोग, जिनके पास डंडे जैसे हथियार हैं, अभी भी अपने क्लब पकड़े हुए हैं। वीर उनके सम्मुख ऐसे लेटे हैं, जैसे स्त्रियाँ अपने प्रियतम के साथ।

बिभ्रतः कवचान्यन्ये विमलान्यायुधानि च न धर्षयन्ति क्रव्यादा जीवन्तीति जनार्दन

Others have dazzling armour and sparkling weapons. O Janārdana! Thinking that they are still alive, the predatory beasts are not oppressing them.

दूसरों के पास चमकदार कवच और चमकदार हथियार हैं। हे जनार्दन! यह सोचकर कि वे अभी भी जीवित हैं, हिंसक जानवर उन पर अत्याचार नहीं कर रहे हैं।

क्रव्यादैः कृष्यमाणानामपरेषां महात्मनाम् शातकौम्भ्यः स्रजश्चित्रा विप्रकीर्णाः समन्ततः

Other greatsouled ones have been dragged away by the predatory beasts. Golden garlands have been scattered around in every direction.

अन्य महात्माओं को हिंसक जानवर खींचकर ले गये हैं। चारों ओर स्वर्ण मालाएँ बिखरी हुई हैं।

एते गोमायवो भीमा निहतानां यशस्विनाम् कण्ठान्तरगतान्हारानाक्षिपन्ति सहस्रशः

Those fierce jackals have attacked the illustrious ones who have been slain. Thousands of necklaces have been flung away from their necks.

उन भयंकर गीदड़ों ने मारे गये वीरों पर आक्रमण किया है। उनके गले से हजारों हार उड़ गये।

सर्वेष्वपररात्रेषु याननन्दन्त बन्दिनः स्तुतिभिश्च परार्ध्याभिरुपचारैश्च शिक्षिताः

All of them would be praised by bards in the second half of the night. In the other half, accomplished minstrels would praise them with many offerings.

रात्रि के दूसरे प्रहर में भाटों द्वारा उन सभी की स्तुति की जायेगी। दूसरे भाग में निपुण वादक अनेक भेंटों से उनकी स्तुति करेंगे।

तानिमाः परिदेवन्ति दुःखार्ताः परमाङ्गनाः कृपणं वृष्णिशार्दूल दुःखशोकार्दिता भृशम्

These excellent women are miserable with grief and are lamenting them now. O tiger among the Vṛṣṇi lineage! They are severely afflicted by sorrow and are despondent.

ये श्रेष्ठ स्त्रियाँ दुःख से दुःखी हो गयी हैं और अब विलाप कर रही हैं। हे वृष्णि वंश के बाघ! वे दुःख से बुरी तरह पीड़ित हैं और निराश हैं।

रक्तोत्पलवनानीव विभान्ति रुचिराणि वै मुखानि परमस्त्रीणां परिशुष्काणि केशव

O Keśava! The faces of these excellent women are like red lotuses. They are handsome and beautiful, but have dried up now.

हे केशव! इन श्रेष्ठ स्त्रियों के मुख लाल कमल के समान हैं। वे सुंदर और खूबसूरत हैं, लेकिन अब सूख गए हैं।

रुदितोपरता ह्येता ध्यायन्त्यः संपरिप्लुताः कुरुस्त्रियोऽभिगच्छन्ति तेन तेनैव दुःखिताः

Some others are no longer crying. They are grief-stricken and reflecting. Miserable, the women of the Kuru lineage are rushing here and there.

कुछ अन्य लोग अब नहीं रो रहे हैं. वे दुःखी हैं और चिंतन कर रहे हैं। कुरु वंश की स्त्रियाँ दुखी होकर इधर-उधर भाग रही हैं।

एतान्यादित्यवर्णानि तपनीयनिभानि च रोषरोदनताम्राणि वक्त्राणि कुरुयोषिताम्

The women of the Kuru lineage possess golden complexions, like that of the sun. But because of the anger and the tears, the faces now have the hue of copper.

कुरु वंश की स्त्रियाँ सूर्य के समान सुनहरे रंग वाली होती हैं। लेकिन गुस्से और आंसुओं के कारण अब चेहरों पर तांबे जैसा रंग आ गया है।

आसामपरिपूर्णार्थं निशम्य परिदेवितम् इतरेतरसंक्रन्दान्न विजानन्ति योषितः

Having lamented a lot, some have become quiet. The women no longer know what another one is lamenting.

बहुत हाय-हाय करके कुछ शान्त हो गये हैं। महिलाओं को अब यह नहीं पता कि दूसरा क्या विलाप कर रहा है।

एता दीर्घमिवोच्छ्वस्य विक्रुश्य च विलप्य च विस्पन्दमाना दुःखेन वीरा जहति जीवितम्

Some have lamented and shrieked for a long time. Those brave ones are now trembling with sorrow and are casting aside their lives.

कुछ लोग बहुत देर तक विलाप करते और चिल्लाते रहे। वे वीर अब दुःख से काँप रहे हैं और अपने प्राण त्याग रहे हैं।

बह्व्यो दृष्ट्वा शरीराणि क्रोशन्ति विलपन्ति च पाणिभिश्चापरा घ्नन्ति शिरांसि मृदुपाणयः

On seeing the many bodies, they are shrieking and lamenting. Others, with delicate hands, are beating on their heads with their hands.

अनेक शवों को देखकर वे चीख-पुकार कर विलाप कर रहे हैं। दूसरे, जिनके नाजुक हाथ हैं, अपने हाथों से उनके सिर पर वार कर रहे हैं।

शिरोभिः पतितैर्हस्तैः सर्वाङ्गैर्यूथशः कृतैः इतरेतरसंपृक्तैराकीर्णा भाति मेदिनी

The earth is beautiful, strewn here and there with fallen heads and hands and heaps of other kinds of limbs that have been severed.

पृथ्वी सुन्दर है, यहाँ-वहाँ गिरे हुए सिरों और हाथों तथा अन्य प्रकार के कटे हुए अंगों के ढेर बिखरे पड़े हैं।

विशिरस्कानथो कायान्दृष्ट्वा घोराभिनन्दिनः मुह्यन्त्यनुचिता नार्यो विदेहानि शिरांसि च

There are horrible heads without bodies and bodies without heads, a sight that āryā women should not see. On seeing this, they are delighted and confused at the same time.

बिना शरीर के भयानक सिर और बिना सिर के शरीर हैं, एक ऐसा दृश्य जिसे आर्य महिलाओं को नहीं देखना चाहिए। यह देखकर वे प्रसन्न भी होते हैं और भ्रमित भी।

शिरः कायेन संधाय प्रेक्षमाणा विचेतसः अपश्यन्त्यो परं तत्र नेदमस्येति दुःखिताः

Affixing a body to a head, they are glancing at it senselessly. Miserably, they are saying, "This is not him. He is somewhere else."

एक शरीर को सिर से जोड़कर वे उसे बेसुध होकर देख रहे हैं। वे दुखी होकर कह रहे हैं, "यह वह नहीं है। वह कहीं और है।"

बाहूरुचरणानन्यान्विशिखोन्मथितान्पृथक् संदधत्योऽसुखाविष्टा मूर्छन्त्येताः पुनः पुनः

There are hands, thighs, feet and other parts that have been cut down by arrows. Joining them, they are overcome by misery and are repeatedly losing their senses.

हाथ, जाँघें, पैर तथा अन्य अंग बाणों से कटे हुए हैं। उनसे जुड़कर वे दुख से घिर जाते हैं और बार-बार अपनी सुध-बुध खो रहे हैं।

उत्कृत्तशिरसश्चान्यान्विजग्धान्मृगपक्षिभिः दृष्ट्वा काश्चिन्न जानन्ति भर्तॄन्भरतयोषितः

There are other bodies without heads, devoured by animals and birds. On seeing these, some of the Bhārata women are not recognizing that these are their husbands.

बिना सिर के अन्य शरीर भी हैं, जिन्हें पशु-पक्षियों ने खा लिया है। इन्हें देखकर कुछ भरत स्त्रियाँ पहचान नहीं पा रही हैं कि ये उनके पति हैं।

पाणिभिश्चापरा घ्नन्ति शिरांसि मधुसूदन प्रेक्ष्य भ्रातॄन्पितॄन्पुत्रान्पतींश्च निहतान्परैः

O Madhusūdana! Others are seeing their brothers, fathers, sons and husbands, killed by the enemy, and are beating their heads with their hands.

हे मधुसूदन! अन्य लोग अपने भाइयों, पिताओं, पुत्रों तथा पतियों को शत्रु द्वारा मारा हुआ देख रहे हैं और हाथों से सिर पीट रहे हैं।

बाहुभिश्च सखड्गैश्च शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः अगम्यकल्पा पृथिवी मांसशोणितकर्दमा

There are arms holding swords and heads wearing earrings. The earth is impassable because of the mire that the flesh and the blood have created.

हाथ में तलवार और सिर पर कुण्डल धारण किये हुए हैं। मांस और खून से पैदा हुए कीचड़ के कारण पृथ्वी अगम्य है।

न दुःखेषूचिताः पूर्वं दुःखं गाहन्त्यनिन्दिताः भ्रातृभिः पितृभिः पुत्रैरुपकीर्णां वसुंधराम्

These unblemished women do not deserve unhappiness and have not been touched by misery earlier. The earth is scattered with their brothers, fathers and sons.

ये निष्कलंक स्त्रियाँ दुःख की पात्र नहीं हैं और इन्हें पहले कभी दुःख ने छुआ तक नहीं है। पृथ्वी उनके भाइयों, पिताओं और पुत्रों से बिखरी हुई है।

यूथानीव किशोरीणां सुकेशीनां जनार्दन स्नुषाणां धृतराष्ट्रस्य पश्य वृन्दान्यनेकशः

O Janārdana! Look at the large numbers of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's daughters-in-law. Those young women, with excellent hair, are like a herd.

हे जनार्दन! धृतराष्ट्र की बहुओं की बड़ी संख्या को देखो। वे युवतियाँ, जिनके बाल उत्तम हैं, झुण्ड के समान हैं।

अतो दुःखतरं किं नु केशव प्रतिभाति मे यदिमाः कुर्वते सर्वा रूपमुच्चावचं स्त्रियः

O Keśava! What greater misery can manifest itself before me, than that all these women should appear in this form and act in this way?

हे केशव! इससे बढ़कर मेरे सामने और कौन सा दुःख प्रकट हो सकता है कि ये सभी स्त्रियाँ इसी रूप में प्रकट हों और इस प्रकार का व्यवहार करें?

नूनमाचरितं पापं मया पूर्वेषु जन्मसु या पश्यामि हतान्पुत्रान्पौत्रान्भ्रातॄंश्च केशव एवमार्ता विलपती ददर्श निहतं सुतम्

O Keśava! It is certain that I have performed wicked deeds in my earlier lives, since I see my sons, grandsons and brothers killed." Lamenting in this way, she saw her slain son.

हे केशव! यह निश्चित है कि मैंने अपने पूर्व जन्मों में दुष्ट कर्म किये हैं, क्योंकि मैं अपने पुत्रों, पौत्रों तथा भाइयों को मारा हुआ देखता हूँ।'' इस प्रकार विलाप करते हुए उसने अपने मारे गये पुत्र को देखा।
