गान्धार्युवाच सोमदत्तसुतं पश्य युयुधानेन पातितम् वितुद्यमानं विहगैर्बहुभिर्माधवान्तिके

Gāndhārī said, "Look at Somadatta's son, brought down by Yuyudhāna. O Mādhava! From a close distance, many birds are tugging away at him.

गांधारी ने कहा, "सोमदत्त के पुत्र को देखो, जिसे युयुधान ने नीचे गिरा दिया है। हे माधव! निकट दूरी से, कई पक्षी उसे खींच रहे हैं।"

पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तः सोमदत्तो जनार्दन युयुधानं महेष्वासं गर्हयन्निव दृश्यते

O Janārdana! On account of his son, Somadatta is tormented by sorrow and is seen to be censuring Yuyudhāna, the great archer.

हे जनार्दन! अपने पुत्र के कारण सोमदत्त दुःख से पीड़ित है और महान धनुर्धर युयुधान की निंदा करता हुआ दिखाई देता है।

असौ तु भूरिश्रवसो माता शोकपरिप्लुता आश्वासयति भर्तारं सोमदत्तमनिन्दिता

Bhurishrava's mother is overcome by grief. The unblemished one is comforting her husband, Somadatta.

भूरिश्रवा की मां शोक से व्याकुल हो गईं। बेदाग अपने पति सोमदत्त को सांत्वना दे रही है।

दिष्ट्या नेदं महाराज दारुणं भरतक्षयम् कुरुसंक्रन्दनं घोरं युगान्तमनुपश्यसि

"O great king! It is through good fortune that you have not seen this terrible destruction of the Bhārata-s. This fearful carnage of the Kuru-s was like that at the end of a yuga.

"हे महान राजा! यह सौभाग्य है कि आपने भरत-वंश का यह भयानक विनाश नहीं देखा है। कुरु-वंश का यह भयानक नरसंहार एक युग के अंत के समान था।

दिष्ट्या यूपध्वजं वीरं पुत्रं भूरिसहस्रदम् अनेकक्रतुयज्वानं निहतं नाद्य पश्यसि

Your brave son had a sacrificial altar on his standard and donated a lot. He performed many rites and sacrifices. It is through good fortune that you have not seen him slain now.

आपके वीर पुत्र ने अपने ध्वज पर यज्ञवेदी बनायी और खूब दान दिया। उन्होंने अनेक अनुष्ठान एवं यज्ञ किये। यह सौभाग्य ही है कि आपने अब तक उसे मारा हुआ नहीं देखा।

दिष्ट्या स्नुषाणामाक्रन्दे घोरं विलपितं बहु न शृणोषि महाराज सारसीनामिवार्णवे

Your daughters-in-law are fearfully lamenting a lot, like female cranes near an ocean. O great king! It is through good fortune that you do not hear them.

तेरी बहुएं समुद्र के निकट सारस की भाँति भयभीत होकर बहुत विलाप कर रही हैं। हे महान राजा! यह सौभाग्य ही है कि आप उन्हें नहीं सुनते।

एकवस्त्रानुसंवीताः प्रकीर्णासितमूर्धजाः स्नुषास्ते परिधावन्ति हतापत्या हतेश्वराः

They are clad in single garments and the dark hair on their heads is dishevelled. With their sons slain, with their lord slain, the daughtersin-law are running around. That tiger among men is being devoured by carnivorous beasts.

वे एक ही वस्त्र पहने हुए हैं और उनके सिर पर काले बाल बिखरे हुए हैं। अपने बेटों के मारे जाने पर, अपने स्वामी के मारे जाने पर, बहुएँ इधर-उधर भाग रही हैं। मनुष्यों में वह बाघ मांसाहारी पशुओं द्वारा खाया जा रहा है।

श्वापदैर्भक्ष्यमाणं त्वमहो दिष्ट्या न पश्यसि छिन्नबाहुं नरव्याघ्रमर्जुनेन निपातितम्

His arm was severed and brought down by Arjuna. It is good fortune that you are not seeing this.

अर्जुन ने उसकी भुजा काट कर नीचे गिरा दी। यह तो सौभाग्य है कि तुम्हें यह दिखाई नहीं पड़ रहा है।

शलं विनिहतं संख्ये भूरिश्रवसमेव च स्नुषाश्च विधवाः सर्वा दिष्ट्या नाद्येह पश्यसि

Together with Bhurishrava, Śala was brought down in the battle. It is through good fortune that you do not see all your widowed daughters-in-law now.

भूरिश्रवा के साथ मिलकर शल को भी युद्ध में मार गिराया गया। यह सौभाग्य ही है कि अब आप अपनी सभी विधवा बहुओं को नहीं देख पाते।

दिष्ट्या तत्काञ्चनं छत्रं यूपकेतोर्महात्मनः विनिकीर्णं रथोपस्थे सौमदत्तेर्न पश्यसि

Somadatta's great-souled son possessed a golden umbrella and a sacrificial altar on his standard. They were shattered on the terrace of his chariot. It is good fortune that you have not seen this."

सोमदत्त के महाबली पुत्र के पास एक स्वर्ण छत्र और उसके ध्वज पर एक यज्ञवेदी थी। वे उसके रथ की छत पर बिखर गये। यह तो सौभाग्य है कि आपने यह नहीं देखा।”

अमूस्तु भूरिश्रवसो भार्याः सात्यकिना हतम् परिवार्यानुशोचन्ति भर्तारमसितेक्षणाः

With Bhurishrava slain by Sātyaki, his dark-eyed wives have surrounded their husband.

सात्यकि द्वारा भूरिश्रवा के मारे जाने के बाद उसकी काली आँखों वाली पत्नियों ने अपने पति को घेर लिया है।

एता विलप्य बहुलं भर्तृशोकेन कर्शिताः पतन्त्यभिमुखा भूमौ कृपणं बत केशव

They are grieving. They are lamenting a lot, afflicted by grief on account of their husband. O Keśava! They are falling downwards towards the ground. Āla-s! This is terrible.

वे शोक मना रहे हैं. वे पति के दुःख से पीड़ित होकर बहुत विलाप कर रही हैं। हे केशव! वे नीचे की ओर जमीन की ओर गिर रहे हैं. इला-स! यह भयानक है.

बीभत्सुरतिबीभत्सं कर्मेदमकरोत्कथम् प्रमत्तस्य यदच्छैत्सीद्बाहुं शूरस्य यज्वनः

How could Bībhatsu have performed such a fearful deed? The brave one performed sacrifices and while he was distracted, he severed his arm.

बिभात्सु ने ऐसा भयानक कार्य कैसे किया होगा? वीर ने यज्ञ किया और ध्यान भटकते ही उसने अपनी भुजा काट ली।

ततः पापतरं कर्म कृतवानपि सात्यकिः यस्मात्प्रायोपविष्टस्य प्राहार्षीत्संशितात्मनः

Sātyaki perpetrated a deed that was more wicked. He was attacked when he had controlled his soul and was ready to give up his life.

सात्यकि ने एक ऐसा कार्य किया जो अधिक दुष्ट था। उन पर हमला तब किया गया जब उन्होंने अपनी आत्मा पर नियंत्रण कर लिया था और अपनी जान देने के लिए तैयार थे।

एको द्वाभ्यां हतः शेषे त्वमधर्मेण धार्मिकः इति यूपध्वजस्यैताः स्त्रियः क्रोशन्ति माधव

O Mādhava! "You followed dharma. You are alone. But you were finally slain by two who followed adharma." This is what the wives of the one with the sacrificial altar on his standard are screaming.

हे माधव! "तुमने धर्म का पालन किया। तुम अकेले हो। लेकिन अंततः तुम दो लोगों द्वारा मारे गए जिन्होंने अधर्म का पालन किया।" जिसके झंडे पर यज्ञवेदी है उसकी पत्नियाँ यही चिल्ला रही हैं।

भार्या यूपध्वजस्यैषा करसंमितमध्यमा कृत्वोत्सङ्गे भुजं भर्तुः कृपणं पर्यदेवयत्

The wife of the one who had a sacrificial altar on his standard has a waist that can be circled by two hands. She has placed her husband's arm on her lap and is lamenting piteously.

जिसके ध्वज पर यज्ञवेदी हो उसकी पत्नी की कमर दो हाथों से परिक्रमा करने योग्य होती है। उसने अपने पति का हाथ अपनी गोद में रख लिया है और करुण विलाप कर रही है।

अयं स रशनोत्कर्षी पीनस्तनविमर्दनः नाभ्यूरुजघनस्पर्शी नीवीविस्रंसनः करः

This arm used to untie her girdle. It used to crush her thick breasts. That arm used to caress her navel, her thighs and her loins and remove her lower garment.

यह हाथ उसकी करधनी खोलता था। उसके मोटे स्तनों को कुचल देता था. वह हाथ उसकी नाभि, उसकी जांघों और उसकी कमर को सहलाता था और उसके निचले वस्त्र को उतार देता था।

वासुदेवस्य सांनिध्ये पार्थेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा युध्यतः समरेऽन्येन प्रमत्तस्य निपातितः

Pārtha is the performer of unblemished deeds. In Vāsudeva's presence, while he was fighting with another one in the battle and was distracted, he was brought down. That beautiful one may be silent, but is censuring you.

पार्थ निष्कलंक कर्म करने वाला है। वासुदेव की उपस्थिति में, जब वह युद्ध में दूसरे से लड़ रहा था और विचलित था, तो उसे नीचे लाया गया। वह सुंदरी भले ही चुप है, पर तुम्हें धिक्कार रही है।

किं नु वक्ष्यसि संसत्सु कथासु च जनार्दन अर्जुनस्य महत्कर्म स्वयं वा स किरीटवान्

O Janārdana! When you are in an assembly, what will you say and tell them? Will you yourself say that Arjuna performed a great deed, or will the one with the diadem say so?

हे जनार्दन! जब आप किसी सभा में होंगे तो आप क्या कहेंगे और उन्हें बताएँगे? क्या आप स्वयं कहेंगे कि अर्जुन ने महान कार्य किया, या मुकुट वाला कहेगा?

इत्येवं गर्हयित्वैषा तूष्णीमास्ते वराङ्गना तामेतामनुशोचन्ति सपत्न्यः स्वामिव स्नुषाम्

The co-wives are sorrowing over their husband and her in the same way, as if they are her daughters-in-law.

सहपत्नियाँ अपने पति और उसके लिए इस प्रकार दुःख मना रही हैं, मानो वे उसकी बहुएँ हों।

गान्धारराजः शकुनिर्बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः निहतः सहदेवेन भागिनेयेन मातुलः

Śākuni, the king of Gāndhāra, was powerful. Truth was his valour. He was slain by Sahadeva, a maternal uncle by a sister's son.

गांधार का राजा शकुनि शक्तिशाली था। सत्य उनकी वीरता थी. उसकी हत्या उसकी बहन के बेटे सहदेव ने की थी।

यः पुरा हेमदण्डाभ्यां व्यजनाभ्यां स्म वीज्यते स एष पक्षिभिः पक्षैः शयान उपवीज्यते

He was earlier fanned with two whisks that had golden handles. He is now lying down and is being fanned by the wings of birds.

पहले उसे दो व्हिस्कों से पंखा किया जाता था जिनके सुनहरे हैंडल होते थे। अब वह लेटा हुआ है और पक्षियों के पंखों से उसे हवा मिल रही है।

यः स्म रूपाणि कुरुते शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः तस्य मायाविनो माया दग्धाः पाण्डवतेजसा

He used to perform many hundreds and thousands of different kinds of māyā. However, his māyā has been consumed by the energy of the Pāṇḍava-s.

वह सैकड़ों और हजारों प्रकार की मायाएँ करता था। हालाँकि, उनकी माया पांडवों की ऊर्जा से भस्म हो गई है।

मायया निकृतिप्रज्ञो जितवान्यो युधिष्ठिरम् सभायां विपुलं राज्यं स पुनर्जीवितं जितः

He was wise about deceit and vanquished Yudhiṣṭhira through the use of māyā in the assembly hall. He won the extensive kingdom and has won the right to be reborn.

वह छल में बुद्धिमान था और उसने सभा भवन में माया के प्रयोग से युधिष्ठिर को परास्त कर दिया। उसने विस्तृत राज्य जीत लिया और पुनर्जन्म का अधिकार भी जीत लिया।

शकुन्ताः शकुनिं कृष्ण समन्तात्पर्युपासते कितवं मम पुत्राणां विनाशायोपशिक्षितम्

O Kṛṣṇā! Birds have surrounded Śākuni on every side. The deceitful one became accomplished for the sake of bringing about the destruction of my sons.

हे कृष्ण! शकुनि को पक्षियों ने चारों ओर से घेर लिया है। वह कपटी मेरे पुत्रों का विनाश करने के लिये ही सफल हुआ।

एतेनैतन्महद्वैरं प्रसक्तं पाण्डवैः सह वधाय मम पुत्राणामात्मनः सगणस्य च

He is the one who was addicted to this great enmity with the Pāṇḍava-s. He has brought about the death of my sons, his own self and that of his followers.

वह वही है जो पांडवों के साथ इस महान शत्रुता का आदी था। उसने मेरे पुत्रों, स्वयं और अपने अनुयायियों की मृत्यु करायी है।

यथैव मम पुत्राणां लोकाः शस्त्रजिताः प्रभो एवमस्यापि दुर्बुद्धेर्लोकाः शस्त्रेण वै जिताः

O lord! My sons have conquered worlds through their weapons. In that way, this evil-minded one has also won worlds through weapons.

हे भगवान! मेरे पुत्रों ने अपने शस्त्रों से विश्व पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली है। इस प्रकार इस दुष्टबुद्धि ने भी शस्त्रों के द्वारा लोकों को जीत लिया है।

कथं च नायं तत्रापि पुत्रान्मे भ्रातृभिः सह विरोधयेदृजुप्रज्ञाननृजुर्मधुसूदन

O Madhusūdana! Even there, because of his evil intelligence, he will create dissension between my sons and the brothers."

हे मधुसूदन! वहाँ भी वह अपनी दुष्ट बुद्धि के कारण मेरे पुत्रों और भाइयों के बीच फूट उत्पन्न करेगा।”
