वैशंपायन उवाच हतेषु सर्वसैन्येषु धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः शुश्रुवे पितरं वृद्धं निर्यातं गजसाह्वयात्

Vaiśampāyana said: When all the soldiers had been slain, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira heard that his aged father had left from Gajasahvya.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब सभी सैनिक मारे गए, तो धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने सुना कि उनके वृद्ध पिता गजसहव्य से चले गए हैं।

सोऽभ्ययात्पुत्रशोकार्तः पुत्रशोकपरिप्लुतम् शोचमानो महाराज भ्रातृभिः सहितस्तदा

O great king! With his brothers, he sorrowed and was afflicted by grief on account of his sons.

हे महान राजा! अपने भाइयों के साथ वह दुःखी हुआ और अपने पुत्रों के कारण भी दुःख से पीड़ित हुआ।

अन्वीयमानो वीरेण दाशार्हेण महात्मना युयुधानेन च तथा तथैव च युयुत्सुना

He went to the one who was overwhelmed with grief on account of his sons. He was followed by the brave and great-souled Dāśārha, Yuyudhāna and Yuyutsu.

वह उसके पास गया जो अपने पुत्रों के कारण दुःख से व्याकुल था। उसके बाद बहादुर और महान आत्मा वाले दशार्ह, युयुधान और युयुत्सु आये।

तमन्वगात्सुदुःखार्ता द्रौपदी शोककर्शिता सह पाञ्चालयोषिद्भिर्यास्तत्रासन्समागताः

They were followed by the extremely grief-stricken Draupadī, who was oppressed by sorrow, and also the frightened Pāñcāla women who had assembled there.

उनके पीछे अत्यन्त दुःखी द्रौपदी, जो दुःख से पीड़ित थी, और भयभीत पंचाल स्त्रियाँ भी वहाँ एकत्रित हो गयीं।

स गङ्गामनु वृन्दानि स्त्रीणां भरतसत्तम कुररीणामिवार्तानां क्रोशन्तीनां ददर्श ह

O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! Along the banks of the Gāṅga, he saw large numbers of women shrieking and lamenting, like female ospreys.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! गंगा के किनारे, उन्होंने बड़ी संख्या में महिलाओं को मादा हिरणों की तरह चिल्लाते और विलाप करते देखा।

ताभिः परिवृतो राजा रुदतीभिः सहस्रशः ऊर्ध्वबाहुभिरार्ताभिर्ब्रुवतीभिः प्रियाप्रिये

Thousands of them wept and surrounded the king. They raised their arms in lamentation and uttered pleasant and unpleasant words.

हजारों की संख्या में लोग रोने लगे और राजा को घेर लिया। उन्होंने विलाप करते हुए भुजाएँ ऊपर उठायीं और प्रिय तथा अप्रिय शब्द बोले।

क्व नु धर्मज्ञता राज्ञः क्व नु साद्यानृशंसता यदावधीत्पितॄन्भ्रातॄन्गुरून्पुत्रान्सखीनपि

"How can a king who knows about dharma commit such an act of violence now? He has slain his fathers, brothers, preceptors, sons and friends.

"अब धर्म को जानने वाला राजा इस प्रकार की हिंसा कैसे कर सकता है? उसने अपने पिता, भाइयों, गुरुओं, पुत्रों और मित्रों को मार डाला है।

घातयित्वा कथं द्रोणं भीष्मं चापि पितामहम् मनस्तेऽभून्महाबाहो हत्वा चापि जयद्रथम्

O mighty-armed one! What was in your mind when you killed Droṇa and your grandfather, Bhīṣma, and when you slew Jayadratha?

हे महाबाहु! जब आपने द्रोण और अपने पितामह भीष्म को मारा और जब आपने जयद्रथ को मारा तो आपके मन में क्या था?

किं नु राज्येन ते कार्यं पितॄन्भ्रातॄनपश्यतः अभिमन्युं च दुर्धर्षं द्रौपदेयांश्च भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! What is the use of the kingdom when you cannot see your fathers and brothers, the invincible Abhimanyu and Draupadī's sons?""

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जब आप अपने पिता और भाइयों, अजेय अभिमन्यु और द्रौपदी के पुत्रों को नहीं देख सकते तो उस राज्य का क्या लाभ?"

अतीत्य ता महाबाहुः क्रोशन्तीः कुररीरिव ववन्दे पितरं ज्येष्ठं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः

The mighty-armed one went past the ones who were shrieking like female ospreys. Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira showed homage to his eldest father.

वह महाबाहु उन लोगों के पास से गुजरा जो मादा शुतुरमुर्ग की भाँति चिल्ला रहे थे। धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने अपने ज्येष्ठ पिता के प्रति श्रद्धा प्रकट की।

ततोऽभिवाद्य पितरं धर्मेणामित्रकर्शनाः न्यवेदयन्त नामानि पाण्डवास्तेऽपि सर्वशः

In that way, those destroyers of enemies also honoured their father, in accordance with dharma. All the Pāṇḍava-s announced their names to him.

इस प्रकार उन शत्रुनाशकों ने भी धर्म के अनुसार अपने पिता का आदर सत्कार किया। सभी पांडवों ने उन्हें अपने नाम बताए।

तमात्मजान्तकरणं पिता पुत्रवधार्दितः अप्रीयमाणः शोकार्तः पाण्डवं परिषस्वजे

However, the father was afflicted because his sons had been killed. Oppressed by grief, he embraced Pāṇḍava reluctantly.

हालाँकि, पिता पीड़ित था क्योंकि उसके बेटे मारे गए थे। दुःख से व्याकुल होकर उसने अनिच्छा से पाण्डव को गले लगा लिया।

धर्मराजं परिष्वज्य सान्त्वयित्वा च भारत दुष्टात्मा भीममन्वैच्छद्दिधक्षुरिव पावकः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! He embraced Dharmarāja and comforted him. Like a fire that wished to burn, he then looked for the evil-souled Bhīmasena.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने धर्मराज को गले लगाया और उन्हें सांत्वना दी। आग की तरह जो जलना चाहती हो, उसने दुष्टात्मा भीमसेन की तलाश की।

स कोपपावकस्तस्य शोकवायुसमीरितः भीमसेनमयं दावं दिधक्षुरिव दृश्यते

The fire of his anger was fanned by the wind of his sorrow. He wished to burn down the forest that was Bhīmasena with his sight.

उसके दुःख की हवा से उसके क्रोध की आग भड़क उठी। वह भीमसेन के जंगल को अपनी दृष्टि से जला देना चाहता था।

तस्य संकल्पमाज्ञाय भीमं प्रत्यशुभं हरिः भीममाक्षिप्य पाणिभ्यां प्रददौ भीममायसम्

However, Harī realized that he harboured ill intentions towards Bhīmā. He pushed Bhīmā aside with his arms and presented an iron Bhīmā.

हालाँकि, हरि को एहसास हुआ कि उसके मन में भीम के प्रति गलत इरादे थे। उसने अपनी भुजाओं से भीम को एक ओर धकेल दिया और एक लोहे का भीम प्रस्तुत किया।

प्रागेव तु महाबुद्धिर्बुद्ध्वा तस्येङ्गितं हरिः संविधानं महाप्राज्ञस्तत्र चक्रे जनार्दनः

Through signs, the immensely intelligent Harī had understood his intentions in advance. The immensely wise Janārdana had therefore thought of a contrivance.

अत्यंत बुद्धिमान हरि ने संकेतों से उसके इरादे पहले ही समझ लिये थे। अत्यंत बुद्धिमान जनार्दन ने एक युक्ति सोची।

तं तु गृह्यैव पाणिभ्यां भीमसेनमयस्मयम् बभञ्ज बलवान्राजा मन्यमानो वृकोदरम्

The strong king grasped the iron Bhīmasena with his arms, thinking it to be Vṛkodara. The king possessed the strength and force of ten thousand elephants.

बलवान राजा ने लोहे के भीमसेन को वृकोदर समझकर अपनी भुजाओं से पकड़ लिया। राजा के पास दस हजार हाथियों का बल और बल था।

नागायुतबलप्राणः स राजा भीममायसम् भङ्क्त्वा विमथितोरस्कः सुस्राव रुधिरं मुखात्

When he grasped the iron Bhīmā and shattered it, his own chest was mangled and blood began to flow from his mouth.

जब उसने लोहे के भीम को पकड़कर उसे तोड़ दिया, तो उसकी अपनी छाती क्षतिग्रस्त हो गई और उसके मुँह से खून बहने लगा।

ततः पपात मेदिन्यां तथैव रुधिरोक्षितः प्रपुष्पिताग्रशिखरः पारिजात इव द्रुमः

Covered with blood, he fell down on the ground, like a pārijāta tree, with blossoms at the ends of its branches.

खून से लथपथ होकर, वह पारिजात वृक्ष की तरह, उसकी शाखाओं के सिरों पर फूल लेकर, जमीन पर गिर पड़ा।

पर्यगृह्णत तं विद्वान्सूतो गावल्गणिस्तदा मैवमित्यब्रवीच्चैनं शमयन्सान्त्वयन्निव

The learned sūta, Gavalgana's son, seized him and asked him not to act in this way. He spoke words to pacify and comfort him.

गावलगण के पुत्र विद्वान सूत ने उसे पकड़ लिया और इस प्रकार कार्य न करने को कहा। उसने उसे शांत करने और सांत्वना देने के लिए शब्द बोले।

स तु कोपं समुत्सृज्य गतमन्युर्महामनाः हा हा भीमेति चुक्रोश भूयः शोकसमन्वितः

The great-minded one abandoned his anger and overcame his rage. Full of sorrow, he repeatedly exclaimed, "Āla-s, Bhīmā! Āla-s!"

महान मन वाले ने अपना क्रोध त्याग दिया और क्रोध पर काबू पा लिया। दुःख से भरकर, वह बार-बार चिल्लाता था, "आला-स, भीम! आला-स!"

तं विदित्वा गतक्रोधं भीमसेनवधार्दितम् वासुदेवो वरः पुंसामिदं वचनमब्रवीत्

On knowing that he had overcome his rage and was full of sorrow because Bhīmasena had been killed, Vāsudeva, supreme among men, spoke these words to him.

यह जानकर कि वह अपने क्रोध पर काबू पा चुका है और भीमसेन के मारे जाने के कारण दुःख से भरा हुआ है, मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ वासुदेव ने उससे ये शब्द कहे।

मा शुचो धृतराष्ट्र त्वं नैष भीमस्त्वया हतः आयसी प्रतिमा ह्येषा त्वया राजन्निपातिता

"O Dhṛtarāṣṭra! Do not grieve. Bhīmā has not been killed by you. O king! It was an iron image that has been brought down by you.

"हे धृतराष्ट्र! शोक मत करो। भीम को तुमने नहीं मारा है। हे राजन! यह एक लोहे की मूर्ति थी जिसे तुमने गिरा दिया है।"

त्वां क्रोधवशमापन्नं विदित्वा भरतर्षभ मयापकृष्टः कौन्तेयो मृत्योर्दंष्ट्रान्तरं गतः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! I knew that you were overcome by rage. So I dragged Kaunteya away, when he was in the jaws of death.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! मैं जानता था कि तुम क्रोध से वशीभूत हो गये हो। इसलिए मैंने कौन्तेय को खींच लिया, जब वह मौत के मुँह में था।

न हि ते राजशार्दूल बले तुल्योऽस्ति कश्चन कः सहेत महाबाहो बाह्वोर्निग्रहणं नरः

O tiger among kings! There is no one who is as strong as you. O mighty-armed one! Where is the man who can withstand being crushed by your arms?

हे राजाओं में व्याघ्र! आपके समान कोई भी शक्तिशाली नहीं है। हे महाबाहु! वह आदमी कहाँ है जो तुम्हारी बाँहों से कुचले जाने को सहन कर सके?

यथान्तकमनुप्राप्य जीवन्कश्चिन्न मुच्यते एवं बाह्वन्तरं प्राप्य तव जीवेन्न कश्चन

When someone has been crushed by your arms, he cannot escape alive, just as one cannot escape alive when one has confronted Death.

जब कोई आपकी भुजाओं से कुचला जाता है, तो वह जीवित नहीं बच सकता, जैसे कोई मृत्यु का सामना करने पर जीवित नहीं बच सकता।

तस्मात्पुत्रेण या सा ते प्रतिमा कारितायसी भीमस्य सेयं कौरव्य तवैवोपहृता मया

O Kauravya! Therefore, I got your son to construct this iron image of Bhīmā and offered it to you.

हे कौरव्य! इसलिए, मैंने आपके पुत्र से भीम की इस लौह प्रतिमा का निर्माण करवाया और इसे आपको अर्पित किया।

पुत्रशोकाभिसंतापाद्धर्मादपहृतं मनः तव राजेन्द्र तेन त्वं भीमसेनं जिघांससि

Because you were tormented by sorrow over your sons, your mind had deviated from dharma. O Indra among kings! That is the reason you wished to kill Bhīmasena.

पुत्रों के शोक से पीड़ित होने के कारण तुम्हारा मन धर्म से भटक गया था। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! यही कारण है कि तुम भीमसेन को मारना चाहते थे।

न च ते तत्क्षमं राजन्हन्यास्त्वं यद्वृकोदरम् न हि पुत्रा महाराज जीवेयुस्ते कथंचन

O king! However, it would not have been proper for you to kill Vṛkodara. O great king! Your sons will never become alive again.

हे राजा! हालाँकि, वृकोदर को मारना आपके लिए उचित नहीं होगा। हे महान राजा! तुम्हारे पुत्र फिर कभी जीवित न होंगे।

तस्माद्यत्कृतमस्माभिर्मन्यमानैः क्षमं प्रति अनुमन्यस्व तत्सर्वं मा च शोके मनः कृथाः

Therefore, you should condone everything that we have done and approve of it. Do not unnecessarily have this sorrow in your mind."

इसलिए, हमने जो कुछ भी किया है, आपको उसे माफ कर देना चाहिए और उसका अनुमोदन करना चाहिए। व्यर्थ ही यह दुःख मन में मत पालो।”
