युधिष्ठिर उवाच मुहूर्तं तावदेकाग्रो मनःश्रोत्रेऽन्तरात्मनि धारयित्वापि ते श्रुत्वा रोचतां वचनं मम

Yudhiṣṭhira said, "Listen attentively for an instant. Cast your mind and your hearing towards your own inner self. If you listen to my words in that way, you will find them to be acceptable.

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा, "एक पल के लिए ध्यान से सुनो। अपने मन और अपनी सुनवाई को अपने भीतर की ओर लगाओ। यदि तुम मेरे शब्दों को उस तरह से सुनोगे, तो तुम्हें वे स्वीकार्य लगेंगे।"

सार्थगम्यमहं मार्गं न जातु त्वत्कृते पुनः गच्छेयं तद्गमिष्यामि हित्वा ग्राम्यसुखान्युत

You will not be able to take me back to the path travelled by the prosperous again. I will leave. I will abandon the path of ordinary pleasures and depart.

तुम मुझे फिर से उस रास्ते पर नहीं ले जा पाओगे जिस पर अमीरों ने यात्रा की है। मैं चला जाऊंगा. मैं साधारण सुखों का मार्ग छोड़कर प्रस्थान करुंगा।

क्षेम्यश्चैकाकिना गम्यः पन्थाः कोऽस्तीति पृच्छ माम् अथ वा नेच्छसि प्रष्टुमपृच्छन्नपि मे शृणु

I will travel alone along that path of tranquility. If you ask me what that is, I will tell you. Even if you don't wish to ask me, I will tell you. Listen.

मैं शांति के उस पथ पर अकेले यात्रा करूंगा। यदि आप मुझसे पूछें कि वह क्या है, तो मैं आपको बताऊंगा। अगर आप मुझसे पूछना नहीं चाहते तो भी मैं आपको बताऊंगा. सुनना।

हित्वा ग्राम्यसुखाचारं तप्यमानो महत्तपः अरण्ये फलमूलाशी चरिष्यामि मृगैः सह

I will discard the pursuit of ordinary pleasures and torment myself through great austerities. I will dwell in the forest, sustaining myself on fruits and roots, and roam around with animals.

मैं साधारण सुखों की खोज को त्याग दूँगा और बड़ी तपस्या के द्वारा स्वयं को कष्ट दूँगा। मैं जंगल में रहकर फल-मूल खाकर अपना गुजारा करूंगा और जानवरों के साथ घूमूंगा।

जुह्वानोऽग्निं यथाकालमुभौ कालावुपस्पृशन् कृशः परिमिताहारश्चर्मचीरजटाधरः

I will pour oblations into the fire at the right time and perform ablutions at the right time. I will emaciate myself by eating little.

मैं ठीक समय पर अग्नि में आहुतियाँ डालूँगा और ठीक समय पर स्नान करूँगा। मैं थोड़ा-सा खाकर अपने को क्षीण कर लूँगा।

शीतवातातपसहः क्षुत्पिपासाश्रमक्षमः तपसा विधिदृष्टेन शरीरमुपशोषयन्

I will cover myself with skins and rags and wear matted hair. I will endure cold, wind, heat and bear hunger, thirst and exhaustion. I will grind down my body through the prescribed austerities.

मैं अपने आप को खाल और चिथड़ों से ढँक लूँगा और उलझे हुए बाल पहनूँगा। मैं सर्दी, हवा, गर्मी सहन करूंगा और भूख, प्यास और थकावट सहन करूंगा। मैं निर्धारित तपस्या के द्वारा अपने शरीर को पीस डालूँगा।

मनःकर्णसुखा नित्यं शृण्वन्नुच्चावचा गिरः मुदितानामरण्येषु वसतां मृगपक्षिणाम्

In the forest, I will cheerfully listen to the pleasant notes, high and low, of the animals and birds that live there. They are pleasant to the mind and the ear.

जंगल में, मैं खुशी-खुशी वहां रहने वाले जानवरों और पक्षियों की ऊंची-नीची मधुर धुनें सुनूंगा। वे मन और कान के लिए सुखद हैं.

आजिघ्रन्पेशलान्गन्धान्फुल्लानां वृक्षवीरुधाम् नानारूपान्वने पश्यन्रमणीयान्वनौकसः

I will inhale the delicate fragrance of blossoming trees and creepers. I will observe the many beautiful forms of those who live in the forest.

मैं खिले हुए वृक्षों और लताओं की भीनी-भीनी सुगंध ग्रहण करूँगा। मैं वन में रहने वालों के अनेक सुन्दर रूपों का अवलोकन करूँगा।

वानप्रस्थजनस्यापि दर्शनं कुलवासिनः नाप्रियाण्याचरिष्यामि किं पुनर्ग्रामवासिनाम्

I will not offend the sight of those who have resorted to vānaprastha and dwell there with their families. I will act so that I do not cause anything unpleasant to them, not to speak of those who live in villages.

मैं उन लोगों को अपमानित नहीं करूंगा जिन्होंने वानप्रस्थ का सहारा लिया है और अपने परिवारों के साथ वहां रहते हैं। मैं ऐसा कार्य करूंगा कि उनसे कुछ भी अप्रिय न हो, गांवों में रहने वालों की तो बात ही छोड़ दें।

एकान्तशीली विमृशन्पक्वापक्वेन वर्तयन् पितॄन्देवांश्च वन्येन वाग्भिरद्भिश्च तर्पयन्

I will live alone and paś-s my time in contemplation, eating that which is ripe and that which is unripe. I will satisfy the ancestors and the gods with wild fruits, water and eloquent words.

मैं अकेला रहूँगा और अपना समय चिंतन में बिताऊँगा, जो पका है और जो कच्चा है उसे खाऊँगा। मैं जंगली फलों, जल तथा मधुर वचनों से पितरों तथा देवताओं को तृप्त करूंगा।

एवमारण्यशास्त्राणामुग्रमुग्रतरं विधिम् सेवमानः प्रतीक्षिष्ये देहस्यास्य समापनम्

I will follow the fiercest of rites prescribed for those who dwell in the forest. Serving in this way, I will await the end of my physical existence.

मैं वनवासियों के लिये बताये गये कठोरतम संस्कारों का पालन करूँगा। इस तरह से सेवा करते हुए, मैं अपने भौतिक अस्तित्व के अंत का इंतजार करूंगा।

अथ वैकोऽहमेकाहमेकैकस्मिन्वनस्पतौ चरन्भैक्ष्यं मुनिर्मुण्डः क्षपयिष्ये कलेवरम्

Or, I will dwell alone and spend my night under different trees. I will shave my head and beg for a living, destroying my body.

या फिर मैं अकेला रहूँगा और अलग-अलग पेड़ों के नीचे अपनी रात बिताऊँगा। मैं अपना सिर मुंडवा लूंगा और भीख मांगकर अपना शरीर नष्ट कर लूंगा।

पांसुभिः समवच्छन्नः शून्यागारप्रतिश्रयः वृक्षमूलनिकेतो वा त्यक्तसर्वप्रियाप्रियः

I will be covered with dust and seek shelter in empty houses. I will find an abode near the root of a tree and abandon everything that is pleasant and unpleasant.

मैं धूल से ढँक जाऊँगा और खाली मकानों में शरण लूँगा। मैं किसी वृक्ष की जड़ के पास निवास करुंगा और जो कुछ भी सुखद और अप्रिय है उसका त्याग कर दूंगा।

न शोचन्न प्रहृष्यंश्च तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः निराशीर्निर्ममो भूत्वा निर्द्वंद्वो निष्परिग्रहः

Sorrow and delight, praise and censure, will be equal for me. I will have no desire and be free of any sense of possessiveness. Opposites will mean the same and I will have nothing to receive.

दुःख और प्रसन्नता, स्तुति और निन्दा, मेरे लिये बराबर होंगे। मेरी कोई इच्छा नहीं होगी और मैं स्वामित्व की किसी भी भावना से मुक्त हो जाऊंगा। विपरीत का मतलब वही होगा और मुझे प्राप्त करने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं होगा।

आत्मारामः प्रसन्नात्मा जडान्धबधिराकृतिः अकुर्वाणः परैः कांचित्संविदं जातु केनचित्

I will find pleasure in my own ātman. I will find serenity in my own ātman. I will be like one who is dumb, blind and deaf. There will be no occasion for me to have conversations with anyone else.

मुझे अपनी आत्मा में आनंद मिलेगा। मुझे अपनी आत्मा में शांति मिलेगी। मैं गूँगे, अन्धे और बहरे के समान हो जाऊँगा। मुझे किसी और से बातचीत करने का मौका ही नहीं मिलेगा.

जङ्गमाजङ्गमान्सर्वान्नविहिंसंश्चतुर्विधान् प्रजाः सर्वाः स्वधर्मस्थाः समः प्राणभृतः प्रति

I will not injure any of the four kinds of beings, mobile and immobile, as they are engaged in their own dharma. I will behave equally towards all those who have life.

मैं चर और स्थावर चारों प्रकार के प्राणियों में से किसी को भी हानि नहीं पहुँचाऊँगा, क्योंकि वे अपने-अपने धर्म में लगे हुए हैं। मैं उन सभी के प्रति समान व्यवहार करूंगा जिनमें जीवन है।'

न चाप्यवहसन्कंचिन्न कुर्वन्भ्रुकुटीं क्वचित् प्रसन्नवदनो नित्यं सर्वेन्द्रियसुसंयतः

I will not laugh at anything, nor will I frown at anything. My face will always be cheerful and all my senses will be well controlled.

मैं किसी बात पर न हंसूंगा, न किसी बात पर नाक-भौं सिकोड़ूंगा। मेरा मुख सदैव प्रसन्न रहेगा और मेरी सभी इन्द्रियाँ वश में रहेंगी।

अपृच्छन्कस्यचिन्मार्गं व्रजन्येनैव केनचित् न देशं न दिशं कांचिद्गन्तुमिच्छन्विशेषतः

I will not ask anyone about the route. I will travel along any path and not wish to go to any special country or direction.

मैं किसी से रास्ते के बारे में नहीं पूछूंगा. मैं किसी भी मार्ग से यात्रा करूंगा और किसी विशेष देश या दिशा में नहीं जाना चाहता।

गमने निरपेक्षश्च पश्चादनवलोकयन् ऋजुः प्रणिहितो गच्छंस्त्रसस्थावरवर्जकः

I will advance impartially and not glance back. I will be upright and cautious, so that I avoid and do not frighten anyone along the path.

मैं निष्पक्षता से आगे बढ़ूंगा और पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखूंगा। मैं सीधा और सावधान रहूँगा, ताकि रास्ते में किसी से बचूँ और न डरूँ।

स्वभावस्तु प्रयात्यग्रे प्रभवन्त्यशनान्यपि द्वंद्वानि च विरुद्धानि तानि सर्वाण्यचिन्तयन्

Nature is most important and food and drink will take care of themselves. I will not think about all the opposite sentiments that stand against this.

प्रकृति सबसे महत्वपूर्ण है और खाना-पीना अपना ख्याल खुद रख लेगा। मैं इसके विरोध में खड़ी सभी विपरीत भावनाओं के बारे में नहीं सोचूंगा।

अल्पं वास्वादु वा भोज्यं पूर्वालाभेन जातु चित् अन्येष्वपि चरँल्लाभमलाभे सप्त पूरयन्

If even a little bit of succulent food is not available at first, I will roam around and seek to find it in seven houses.

यदि पहले थोड़ा-सा भी रसीला भोजन न मिले तो घूम-घूमकर सातों घरों में ढूँढ़ लूँगा।

विधूमे न्यस्तमुसले व्यङ्गारे भुक्तवज्जने अतीतपात्रसंचारे काले विगतभिक्षुके

But I will go at the time when there is no smoke, when the pestles have been put away, when the coal in the fire has died down, when food has been eaten, when the handling of the pots is over and when all the mendicants have gone.

परन्तु मैं उस समय जाऊँगा जब धुआँ न हो, जब मूसलें बुझ चुकी हों, जब आग का कोयला सूख गया हो, जब भोजन खाया जा चुका हो, जब बर्तनों को सँभालना समाप्त हो गया हो और जब सभी भिक्षुक चले गए हों।

एककालं चरन्भैक्ष्यं गृहे द्वे चैव पञ्च च स्पृहापाशान्विमुच्याहं चरिष्यामि महीमिमाम्

At one time, I will roam around and beg from two to five houses. I will roam around the earth, freeing myself from the noose of desire.

एक समय में घूम-घूमकर दो-पाँच घरों में भीख माँगूँगा। मैं कामना के पाश से मुक्त होकर पृथ्वी पर चारों ओर घूमूंगा।

न जिजीविषुवत्किंचिन्न मुमूर्षुवदाचरन् जीवितं मरणं चैव नाभिनन्दन्न च द्विषन्

I will be like one who does not wish to live. I will act like one who is about to die. I will not find delight or sorrow in either life or death.

मैं उस व्यक्ति के समान हो जाऊंगा जो जीना नहीं चाहता। मैं उस व्यक्ति की तरह व्यवहार करूंगा जो मरने वाला है। मुझे न तो जीवन में और न ही मृत्यु में सुख या दुःख मिलेगा।

वास्यैकं तक्षतो बाहुं चन्दनेनैकमुक्षतः नाकल्याणं न कल्याणं चिन्तयन्नुभयोस्तयोः

If someone severs one of my arms and another person smears the other with sandalwood paste, I will not think of doing good things to the latter and harming the former.

यदि कोई मेरी एक भुजा काट दे और दूसरा व्यक्ति मेरी दूसरी भुजा पर चंदन का लेप लगा दे, तो मैं दूसरे का भला करने और पहले वाले का अहित करने के बारे में नहीं सोचूंगा।

याः काश्चिज्जीवता शक्याः कर्तुमभ्युदयक्रियाः सर्वास्ताः समभित्यज्य निमेषादिव्यवस्थितः

There are acts that are done to improve the state of one's life. I will abandon all of them.

ऐसे कार्य हैं जो किसी के जीवन की स्थिति को बेहतर बनाने के लिए किए जाते हैं। मैं उन सभी को त्याग दूँगा।

तेषु नित्यमसक्तश्च त्यक्तसर्वेन्द्रियक्रियः सुपरित्यक्तसंकल्पः सुनिर्णिक्तात्मकल्मषः

Blinking my eyes, I will give up attachment to all of them and abandon all the acts that are connected to the senses. When I have abandoned all resolution, I will purify myself well.

मैं अपनी आँखें झपकाते हुए उन सभी के प्रति आसक्ति छोड़ दूँगा और उन सभी कार्यों का त्याग कर दूँगा जो इंद्रियों से संबंधित हैं। जब मैं सभी संकल्पों का त्याग कर दूँगा, तब मैं स्वयं को अच्छी तरह शुद्ध कर लूँगा।

विमुक्तः सर्वसङ्गेभ्यो व्यतीतः सर्ववागुराः न वशे कस्यचित्तिष्ठन्सधर्मा मातरिश्वनः

I will have freed myself from all attachment and will have passed beyond all bonds. I will not be under the subjugation of anything and will follow the dharma of the wind.

मैं अपने आप को सभी आसक्ति से मुक्त कर चुका हूँ और सभी बंधनों से परे चला गया हूँ। मैं किसी के अधीन नहीं रहूँगा और पवन धर्म का पालन करूँगा।

वीतरागश्चरन्नेवं तुष्टिं प्राप्स्यामि शाश्वतीम् तृष्णया हि महत्पापमज्ञानादस्मि कारितः

I will roam around without any attachment and will obtain eternal satisfaction. It was because of my greed and ignorance that I performed extremely wicked deeds.

मैं बिना किसी आसक्ति के चारों ओर घूमूंगा और शाश्वत संतुष्टि प्राप्त करूंगा। यह मेरे लालच और अज्ञानता के कारण था कि मैंने अत्यंत दुष्ट कर्म किये।

कुशलाकुशलान्येके कृत्वा कर्माणि मानवाः कार्यकारणसंश्लिष्टं स्वजनं नाम बिभ्रति

There are men who perform good and wicked deeds because they are tied down, through cause and effect, to their relatives.

ऐसे लोग हैं जो अच्छे और बुरे कर्म करते हैं क्योंकि वे कारण और प्रभाव के कारण अपने रिश्तेदारों से बंधे होते हैं।

आयुषोऽन्ते प्रहायेदं क्षीणप्रायं कलेवरम् प्रतिगृह्णाति तत्पापं कर्तुः कर्मफलं हि तत्

When the lifespan is over, the body is almost completely decayed. They then receive the fruits of those wicked deeds, but no one except the doer obtains the consequence.

जब जीवन काल समाप्त हो जाता है, तो शरीर लगभग पूरी तरह से नष्ट हो जाता है। फिर उन्हें उन बुरे कर्मों का फल तो मिलता है, लेकिन कर्ता के अलावा किसी को भी उसका फल नहीं मिलता।

एवं संसारचक्रेऽस्मिन्व्याविद्धे रथचक्रवत् समेति भूतग्रामोऽयं भूतग्रामेण कार्यवान्

The wheel of life goes on in this way, like the turning wheel of a chariot. This collection of beings meet each other. This collection of beings acts.

जीवन का पहिया ऐसे ही चलता रहता है, जैसे रथ का पहिया घूमता रहता है। प्राणियों का यह संग्रह एक दूसरे से मिलता है। प्राणियों का यह संग्रह कार्य करता है।

जन्ममृत्युजराव्याधिवेदनाभिरुपद्रुतम् असारमिममस्वन्तं संसारं त्यजतः सुखम्

Birth, death, old age, disease and pain are without any substance and transient. On this earth, one who can discard them is happy.

जन्म, मृत्यु, बुढ़ापा, रोग और दुःख निर्विकार और क्षणभंगुर हैं। इस पृथ्वी पर वही सुखी है जो इन्हें त्याग सकता है।

दिवः पतत्सु देवेषु स्थानेभ्यश्च महर्षिषु को हि नाम भवेनार्थी भवेत्कारणतत्त्ववित्

The gods fall down from heaven and so do the maharṣi-s from their appointed spots. Which person, if he desires to know about the reason and truth behind existence, would then desire to exist?

देवता स्वर्ग से नीचे गिर जाते हैं और महर्षि भी अपने नियत स्थानों से। कौन सा व्यक्ति, यदि वह अस्तित्व के पीछे के कारण और सत्य के बारे में जानने की इच्छा रखता है, तो अस्तित्व में रहने की इच्छा करेगा?

कृत्वा हि विविधं कर्म तत्तद्विविधलक्षणम् पार्थिवैर्नृपतिः स्वल्पैः कारणैरेव बध्यते

A king may perform many kinds of deeds, in accordance with the rites and auspicious signs. But that king will be bound down by the slightest bit of action.

राजा संस्कार तथा शुभ लक्षणों के अनुसार अनेक प्रकार के कार्य कर सकता है। परन्तु वह राजा जरा सी भी कार्यवाही से बाध्य हो जायेगा।

तस्मात्प्रज्ञामृतमिदं चिरान्मां प्रत्युपस्थितम् तत्प्राप्य प्रार्थये स्थानमव्ययं शाश्वतं ध्रुवम्

For a long time, this amṛtā of wisdom has presented itself before me. Therefore, I desire it and want the eternal and certain state, from which one does not decay.

लंबे समय से, ज्ञान का यह अमृत मेरे सामने प्रस्तुत हुआ है। इसलिए, मैं इसकी इच्छा करता हूं और शाश्वत और निश्चित स्थिति चाहता हूं, जिससे किसी का क्षय न हो।

एतया सततं वृत्त्या चरन्नेवंप्रकारया देहं संस्थापयिष्यामि निर्भयं मार्गमास्थितः

I will conduct myself in this virtuous way and roam around, without any connection to the material world. I will fearlessly place my body on that path."

मैं इस सदाचारी तरीके से आचरण करूंगा और भौतिक संसार से किसी भी संबंध के बिना, चारों ओर घूमूंगा। मैं निडर होकर अपने शरीर को उस पथ पर रखूंगा।”
