वैशंपायन उवाच दृष्ट्वैव नरशार्दूलस्तावग्निसमतेजसौ संजहार शरं दिव्यं त्वरमाणो धनंजयः

Vaiśampāyana said: O tiger among men! On seeing those two energetic ones, who were like fires, Dhanañjayā quickly withdrew his divine arrow.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! अग्नि के समान तेजस्वी उन दोनों तेजस्वी बाणों को देखकर धनंजय ने शीघ्र ही अपना दिव्य बाण वापस ले लिया।

उवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठस्तावृषी प्राञ्जलिस्तदा प्रयुक्तमस्त्रमस्त्रेण शाम्यतामिति वै मया

He joined his hands in salutation and spoke to the best of riṣi-s. "This weapon was used by me to pacify the other weapon.

उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर नमस्कार किया और श्रेष्ठ ऋषियों से बात की। “इस अस्त्र का प्रयोग मैंने दूसरे अस्त्र को शान्त करने के लिए किया था।

संहृते परमास्त्रेऽस्मिन्सर्वानस्मानशेषतः पापकर्मा ध्रुवं द्रौणिः प्रधक्ष्यत्यस्त्रतेजसा

Once I withdraw this supreme weapon, all of us will be destroyed. It is certain that Droṇa's son, the perpetrator of wicked deeds, will consume us with the energy of his weapon.

एक बार जब मैं इस सर्वोच्च हथियार को वापस ले लूँगा, तो हम सभी नष्ट हो जायेंगे। यह निश्चित है कि द्रोण का पुत्र, दुष्ट कर्मों का अपराधी, अपने हथियार की ऊर्जा से हमें भस्म कर देगा।

अत्र यद्धितमस्माकं लोकानां चैव सर्वथा भवन्तौ देवसंकाशौ तथा संहर्तुमर्हतः

The two of you are like gods. You should think of a means so that we, and all the worlds, are saved."

आप दोनों देवताओं के समान हैं। आपको ऐसे उपाय के बारे में सोचना चाहिए जिससे हम और सारी दुनिया बच जाए।"

इत्युक्त्वा संजहारास्त्रं पुनरेव धनंजयः संहारो दुष्करस्तस्य देवैरपि हि संयुगे

Having spoken these words, Dhanañjayā again withdrew his weapon. In an encounter, it is difficult for even the gods to do this.

ये शब्द कहकर धनंजय ने फिर अपना हथियार वापस ले लिया। मुठभेड़ में तो देवताओं के लिए भी ऐसा करना कठिन है।

विसृष्टस्य रणे तस्य परमास्त्रस्य संग्रहे न शक्तः पाण्डवादन्यः साक्षादपि शतक्रतुः

With the exception of Śatakratu himself, no one other than Pāṇḍava was capable of withdrawing a supreme weapon, once it had been released in a battle.

शतक्रतु को छोड़कर, पांडवों के अलावा कोई भी युद्ध में छोड़े गए सर्वोच्च हथियार को वापस लेने में सक्षम नहीं था।

ब्रह्मतेजोभवं तद्धि विसृष्टमकृतात्मना न शक्यमावर्तयितुं ब्रह्मचारिव्रतादृते

Once invoked, it was full of Brahmā's energy. With the exception of someone with a cleansed soul and someone who was a brahmachari, no one else was capable of withdrawing it.

एक बार आह्वान करने के बाद, यह ब्रह्मा की ऊर्जा से भरपूर था। शुद्ध आत्मा वाले व्यक्ति और ब्रह्मचारी व्यक्ति को छोड़कर, कोई भी इसे वापस लेने में सक्षम नहीं था।

अचीर्णब्रह्मचर्यो यः सृष्ट्वावर्तयते पुनः तदस्त्रं सानुबन्धस्य मूर्धानं तस्य कृन्तति

If a person is not a brahmachari, and having released the weapon, wishes to withdraw it, the weapon will sever his head, with that of his descendants.

यदि कोई व्यक्ति ब्रह्मचारी नहीं है, और हथियार छोड़ने के बाद उसे वापस लेना चाहता है, तो हथियार उसके वंशजों के साथ उसका सिर भी अलग कर देगा।

ब्रह्मचारी व्रती चापि दुरवापमवाप्य तत् परमव्यसनार्तोऽपि नार्जुनोऽस्त्रं व्यमुञ्चत

Arjuna had followed the vows of a brahmachari. He had obtained a weapon that was difficult to get. However, he had never invoked it, not even in a time of great calamity. Pāṇḍava followed the vows of truth.

अर्जुन ने ब्रह्मचारी व्रत का पालन किया था। उसने एक ऐसा हथियार प्राप्त कर लिया था जिसे प्राप्त करना कठिन था। हालाँकि, उन्होंने कभी इसका आह्वान नहीं किया, यहाँ तक कि बड़ी विपत्ति के समय में भी नहीं। पांडव ने सत्य व्रत का पालन किया।

सत्यव्रतधरः शूरो ब्रह्मचारी च पाण्डवः गुरुवर्ती च तेनास्त्रं संजहारार्जुनः पुनः

He was brave and a brahmachari. He was obedient to his superiors. It was because of this that Arjuna was capable of withdrawing that weapon again.

वह वीर और ब्रह्मचारी थे। वह अपने वरिष्ठों का आज्ञाकारी था। इसी कारण अर्जुन उस अस्त्र को दोबारा निकालने में सक्षम हो सका।

द्रौणिरप्यथ संप्रेक्ष्य तावृषी पुरतः स्थितौ न शशाक पुनर्घोरमस्त्रं संहर्तुमाहवे

Droṇa's son saw that the two riṣi-s were stationed in front of him. However, in the encounter, he was incapable of again withdrawing that terrible weapon.

द्रोण के पुत्र ने देखा कि दोनों ऋषि उसके सामने खड़े थे। हालाँकि, मुठभेड़ में, वह फिर से उस भयानक हथियार को वापस लेने में असमर्थ था।

अशक्तः प्रतिसंहारे परमास्त्रस्य संयुगे द्रौणिर्दीनमना राजन्द्वैपायनमभाषत

In the encounter, he was incapable of restraining that supreme weapon. O king! Distressed in his mind, Droṇa's son addressed Dvaipāyana.

मुठभेड़ में, वह उस सर्वोच्च हथियार को रोकने में असमर्थ था। हे राजा! मन में व्यथित होकर द्रोण के पुत्र ने द्वैपायन को संबोधित किया।

उत्तमव्यसनार्तेन प्राणत्राणमभीप्सुना मयैतदस्त्रमुत्सृष्टं भीमसेनभयान्मुने

"I was distressed because I confronted a great calamity. I was scared of saving my life. I released the weapon out of fear. I was scared of Bhīmasena.

"मैं व्यथित था क्योंकि मुझे एक बड़ी विपत्ति का सामना करना पड़ा था। मैं अपनी जान बचाने से डर रहा था। मैंने डर के मारे हथियार छोड़ दिया। मैं भीमसेन से डर गया था।

अधर्मश्च कृतोऽनेन धार्तराष्ट्रं जिघांसता मिथ्याचारेण भगवन्भीमसेनेन संयुगे

In attempting to kill Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, he acted in accordance with adharma. O illustrious one! Bhīmasena resorted to falsehood in the battle.

धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र को मारने के प्रयास में उसने अधर्म के अनुसार कार्य किया। हे महामहिम! भीमसेन ने युद्ध में झूठ का सहारा लिया।

अतः सृष्टमिदं ब्रह्मन्मयास्त्रमकृतात्मना तस्य भूयोऽद्य संहारं कर्तुं नाहमिहोत्सहे

O brāhmaṇa! Though I have not cleansed my soul, this is the reason I invoked this weapon. I do not have any interest in withdrawing it, even now.

हे ब्राह्मण! हालाँकि मैंने अपनी आत्मा को शुद्ध नहीं किया है, यही कारण है कि मैंने इस हथियार का प्रयोग किया। अब भी मुझे इसे वापस लेने में कोई दिलचस्पी नहीं है.

विसृष्टं हि मया दिव्यमेतदस्त्रं दुरासदम् अपाण्डवायेति मुने वह्नितेजोऽनुमन्त्र्य वै

Once this celestial weapon has been released by me, it is invincible. O sage! I have invoked it with the energy of the fire and with mantra-s, "To bring an end to the Pāṇḍava-s"

एक बार जब यह दिव्य अस्त्र मेरे द्वारा छोड़ा गया, तो यह अजेय है। हे ऋषि! मैंने इसे अग्नि की ऊर्जा और मंत्रों से आह्वान किया है, "पांडवों का अंत करने के लिए"

तदिदं पाण्डवेयानामन्तकायाभिसंहितम् अद्य पाण्डुसुतान्सर्वाञ्जीविताद्भ्रंशयिष्यति

Therefore, it has been created for the destruction of the Pāṇḍaveya-s. It will now destroy all the sons of Pāṇḍu who are alive.

अत: इसकी रचना पाण्डवियों के विनाश के लिये की गयी है। अब यह जीवित पाण्डु के सभी पुत्रों को नष्ट कर देगा।

कृतं पापमिदं ब्रह्मन्रोषाविष्टेन चेतसा वधमाशास्य पार्थानां मयास्त्रं सृजता रणे

O brāhmaṇa! With my senses destroyed by anger, I have committed a wicked deed. Created by me in this encounter, this weapon will slaughter the Pārtha-s."

हे ब्राह्मण! क्रोध से नष्ट हुई मेरी इन्द्रियों से मैंने एक दुष्ट कर्म किया है। इस मुठभेड़ में मेरे द्वारा बनाया गया यह हथियार पार्थ-एस का वध करेगा।

व्यास उवाच अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरस्तात विद्वान्पार्थो धनंजयः उत्सृष्टवान्न रोषेण न वधाय तवाहवे

Vyāsa replied: O son! Pārtha Dhanañjayā knew about the weapon brahmashira. However, he did not release it out of rage, or to slay you in this encounter.

व्यास ने उत्तर दिया: हे पुत्र! पार्थ धनंजय ब्रह्मशिरा शस्त्र के बारे में जानते थे। हालाँकि, उसने इसे क्रोध के कारण या इस मुठभेड़ में आपको मारने के लिए जारी नहीं किया था।

अस्त्रमस्त्रेण तु रणे तव संशमयिष्यता विसृष्टमर्जुनेनेदं पुनश्च प्रतिसंहृतम्

In the encounter, he wished to pacify the weapon that had been released by you. Arjuna released it, and withdrew it again.

मुठभेड़ में उसने आपके द्वारा छोड़े गए हथियार को शांत करना चाहा। अर्जुन ने उसे छोड़ दिया और पुनः वापस ले लिया।

ब्रह्मास्त्रमप्यवाप्यैतदुपदेशात्पितुस्तव क्षत्रधर्मान्महाबाहुर्नाकम्पत धनंजयः

He obtained instruction in the use of brahmāstra from your father. However, the mighty-armed Dhanañjayā was compassionate and did not deviate from the dharma of kṣatriya-s.

उन्होंने आपके पिता से ब्रह्मास्त्र के प्रयोग की शिक्षा प्राप्त की थी। हालाँकि, महाबाहु धनंजय दयालु थे और क्षत्रिय-धर्म से विचलित नहीं हुए।

एवं धृतिमतः साधोः सर्वास्त्रविदुषः सतः सभ्रातृबन्धोः कस्मात्त्वं वधमस्य चिकीर्षसि

He possesses fortitude and is virtuous. He has knowledge of all the weapons and is righteous. Why do you wish to kill such a person and his brothers?

उसके पास धैर्य है और वह गुणी है। वह समस्त अस्त्र-शस्त्रों का ज्ञाता तथा धर्मात्मा है। आप ऐसे व्यक्ति और उसके भाइयों को क्यों मारना चाहते हैं?

अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो यत्र परमास्त्रेण वध्यते समा द्वादश पर्जन्यस्तद्राष्ट्रं नाभिवर्षति

In a spot where the weapon named brahmashira is countered through the use of another supreme weapon, in such a kingdom, it does not rain for twelve years.

जिस स्थान पर ब्रह्मशिरा नामक अस्त्र का मुकाबला किसी अन्य श्रेष्ठ अस्त्र के प्रयोग से किया जाता है, ऐसे राज्य में बारह वर्षों तक वर्षा नहीं होती है।

एतदर्थं महाबाहुः शक्तिमानपि पाण्डवः न विहन्त्येतदस्त्रं ते प्रजाहितचिकीर्षया

The mightyarmed Pāṇḍava is capable. However, because he had the welfare of all subjects in his mind, he did not counter your weapon with his.

शक्तिशाली पांडव सक्षम हैं। हालाँकि, क्योंकि उनके मन में सभी विषयों के कल्याण की भावना थी, इसलिए उन्होंने आपके हथियार का मुकाबला अपने हथियार से नहीं किया।

पाण्डवास्त्वं च राष्ट्रं च सदा संरक्ष्यमेव नः तस्मात्संहर दिव्यं त्वमस्त्रमेतन्महाभुज

The Pāṇḍava-s, you, and the kingdom must always be protected. O mighty-armed one! That is the reason you should withdraw that divine weapon.

पांडवों, आपकी और राज्य की सदैव रक्षा होनी चाहिए। हे महाबाहु! इसलिये तुम्हें वह दिव्य अस्त्र वापस ले लेना चाहिये।

अरोषस्तव चैवास्तु पार्थाः सन्तु निरामयाः न ह्यधर्मेण राजर्षिः पाण्डवो जेतुमिच्छति

Get rid of this rage and let the Pāṇḍava-s always be without disease. Rājarṣi Pāṇḍava does not wish to win through the use of adharma.

इस क्रोध से छुटकारा पाओ और पांडवों को सदैव रोगमुक्त रहने दो। राजर्षि पांडव अधर्म के प्रयोग से जीतना नहीं चाहते।

मणिं चैतं प्रयच्छैभ्यो यस्ते शिरसि तिष्ठति एतदादाय ते प्राणान्प्रतिदास्यन्ति पाण्डवाः

You possess a gem on your forehead. Give that to me. Once you have given that, the Pāṇḍava-s will grant you your life in return."

आपके माथे पर एक रत्न है। वह मुझे दो। एक बार तुमने वह दे दिया, तो बदले में पांडव तुम्हें जीवनदान देंगे।"

द्रौणिरुवाच पाण्डवैर्यानि रत्नानि यच्चान्यत्कौरवैर्धनम् अवाप्तानीह तेभ्योऽयं मणिर्मम विशिष्यते

Droṇa's son said, "The Pāṇḍaveya-s possess jewels and there are riches obtained by the Kaurava-s. However, this gem that belongs to me is superior to both of those.

द्रोण के पुत्र ने कहा, "पांडवों के पास रत्न हैं और कौरवों के पास भी धन है। तथापि, यह रत्न जो मेरा है, उन दोनों से श्रेष्ठ है।"

यमाबध्य भयं नास्ति शस्त्रव्याधिक्षुधाश्रयम् देवेभ्यो दानवेभ्यो वा नागेभ्यो वा कथंचन

When this is worn, there is never any fear from weapons, disease, hunger, lack of protection, gods, dānava-s and serpents.

इसे धारण करने से शस्त्र, रोग, भूख, रक्षा का अभाव, देवताओं, दानवों तथा नागों से कभी भय नहीं रहता।

न च रक्षोगणभयं न तस्करभयं तथा एवंवीर्यो मणिरयं न मे त्याज्यः कथंचन

Nor is there fear from large numbers of rākṣasa-s, or fear from thieves. This is the kind of energy that is vested in this gem and I should never give it up.

न ही बड़ी संख्या में राक्षसों से डर है, या चोरों से डर है। इस प्रकार की ऊर्जा इस रत्न में निहित है और मुझे इसे कभी नहीं छोड़ना चाहिए।

यत्तु मे भगवानाह तन्मे कार्यमनन्तरम् अयं मणिरयं चाहमिषीका निपतिष्यति गर्भेषु पाण्डवेयानाममोघं चैतदुद्यतम्

O illustrious one! Take it. However, what should be done next? Here is the gem. But the reed invoked by me is invincible and it will descend on the wombs of the Pāṇḍaveya-s."

हे महामहिम! इसे लें। हालाँकि, आगे क्या किया जाना चाहिए? यहाँ मणि है. लेकिन मेरे द्वारा अभिमंत्रित ईख अजेय है और यह पांडवों के गर्भ में अवतरित होगी।"

व्यास उवाच एवं कुरु न चान्या ते बुद्धिः कार्या कदाचन गर्भेषु पाण्डवेयानां विसृज्यैतदुपारम

Vyāsa replied: Do this and do not turn your mind to any other task. Release this towards the wombs of the Pāṇḍaveya-s and desist.

व्यास ने उत्तर दिया: ऐसा करो और अपना मन किसी अन्य कार्य में मत लगाओ। इसे पांडवों के गर्भ की ओर छोड़ें और रुकें।

वैशंपायन उवाच ततः परममस्त्रं तदश्वत्थामा भृशातुरः द्वैपायनवचः श्रुत्वा गर्भेषु प्रमुमोच ह

Vaiśampāyana said: Aśvatthāma was severely afflicted. At this, on hearing Dvaipāyana's words, he released that supreme weapon in the direction of the wombs.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: अश्वत्थामा गंभीर रूप से पीड़ित था। इस पर, द्वैपायन के शब्दों को सुनकर, उन्होंने गर्भ की दिशा में वह सर्वोच्च हथियार छोड़ा।
