जनमेजय उवाच गते भगवति व्यासे धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः किमचेष्टत विप्रर्षे तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि

Janamejaya asked: After the illustrious Vyāsa had departed, what did King Dhṛtarāṣṭra do? O brāhmaṇa riṣi! You should tell me that in detail.

जनमेजय ने पूछा: महामहिम व्यास के चले जाने के बाद, राजा धृतराष्ट्र ने क्या किया? हे ब्राह्मण ऋषि! आप मुझे वह बात विस्तार से बतायें।

वैशंपायन उवाच एतच्छ्रुत्वा नरश्रेष्ठ चिरं ध्यात्वा त्वचेतनः संजयं योजयेत्युक्त्वा विदुरं प्रत्यभाषत

Vaiśampāyana replied: O best among men! After he heard this, for a long time, he was conscious and thought. He then asked Sañjaya to yoke and told Vidūra,

वैशम्पायन ने उत्तर दिया: हे पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ! यह सुनने के बाद वह काफी देर तक होश में रहा और सोचता रहा। फिर उन्होंने संजय से जुआ खेलने को कहा और विदुर से कहा,

क्षिप्रमानय गान्धारीं सर्वाश्च भरतस्त्रियः वधूं कुन्तीमुपादाय याश्चान्यास्तत्र योषितः

"Quickly bring Gāndhārī and all the women of the Bhārata lineage here. Bring my sister-in-law, Kuntī, and all the other women here."

"जल्दी गांधारी और भरत वंश की सभी महिलाओं को यहां लाओ। मेरी भाभी, कुंती और अन्य सभी महिलाओं को यहां लाओ।"

एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा विदुरं धर्मवित्तमम् शोकविप्रहतज्ञानो यानमेवान्वपद्यत

Thus did the one with dharma in his soul speak to Vidūra, who was knowledgeable about dharma. With his intelligence clouded by sorrow, he climbed onto the chariot.

इस प्रकार जिसकी आत्मा में धर्म था, उसने विदुर से बात की, जो धर्म के बारे में जानकार था। दुःख से घिरी हुई उसकी बुद्धि रथ पर चढ़ गई।

गान्धारी चैव शोकार्ता भर्तुर्वचनचोदिता सह कुन्त्या यतो राजा सह स्त्रीभिरुपाद्रवत्

Gāndhārī was stricken by grief, but was goaded by the words of her husband. With Kuntī and the other women, she rushed to where the king was.

गांधारी दुःख से त्रस्त थी, लेकिन अपने पति के शब्दों से विचलित हो गयी। कुन्ती तथा अन्य स्त्रियों के साथ वह वहाँ पहुँची जहाँ राजा थे।

ताः समासाद्य राजानं भृशं शोकसमन्विताः आमन्त्र्यान्योन्यमीयुः स्म भृशमुच्चुक्रुशुस्ततः

Approaching the king, they were overcome with great sorrow. They greeted each other and cried grievously.

राजा के पास पहुँचकर वे बड़े दुःख से विह्वल हो गये। उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को बधाई दी और फूट-फूटकर रोये।

ताः समाश्वासयत्क्षत्ता ताभ्यश्चार्ततरः स्वयम् अश्रुकण्ठीः समारोप्य ततोऽसौ निर्ययौ पुरात्

Kshatta, who was himself suffering even more, comforted them. The voices of the women were choking with tears. He made them ascend their vehicles and left the city.

क्षत्ता ने, जो स्वयं और भी अधिक पीड़ित थे, उन्हें सांत्वना दी। महिलाओं की आवाजें आंसुओं से घुट रही थीं. उसने उन्हें अपने वाहनों पर बैठाया और शहर छोड़ दिया।

ततः प्रणादः संजज्ञे सर्वेषु कुरुवेश्मसु आकुमारं पुरं सर्वमभवच्छोककर्शितम्

In all the houses of the Kuru-s, loud lamentations were heard. The entire city, including the children, was afflicted by grief.

कुरु के सभी घरों में तीव्र विलाप सुनाई देने लगा। बच्चों समेत पूरा शहर शोक में डूब गया।

अदृष्टपूर्वा या नार्यः पुरा देवगणैरपि पृथग्जनेन दृश्यन्त तास्तदा निहतेश्वराः

Those women had earlier not been seen, not even by the large numbers of the gods. With their lords slain, they were now seen by ordinary men.

उन स्त्रियों को पहले कभी नहीं देखा गया था, यहां तक ​​कि बड़ी संख्या में देवताओं ने भी नहीं देखा था। अपने स्वामियों के मारे जाने के बाद, अब वे आम लोगों द्वारा देखे जाने लगे।

प्रकीर्य केशान्सुशुभान्भूषणान्यवमुच्य च एकवस्त्रधरा नार्यः परिपेतुरनाथवत्

Their beautiful hair was dishevelled and they cast aside their ornaments. Clad in single garments, those women ran around hither and thither, without protectors.

उनके सुन्दर बाल बिखरे हुए थे और उन्होंने अपने आभूषण एक ओर फेंक दिये। एक ही वस्त्र पहने वे महिलाएँ बिना किसी रक्षक के इधर-उधर भागती रहीं।

श्वेतपर्वतरूपेभ्यो गृहेभ्यस्तास्त्वपाक्रमन् गुहाभ्य इव शैलानां पृषत्यो हतयूथपाः

The houses were as beautiful as white mountains and they emerged from these. They were like those leaving homes in mountains, when leaders of the herds had been slain.

घर सफेद पहाड़ों की तरह खूबसूरत थे और उन्हीं से निकले हुए थे। वे उन लोगों के समान थे जो पहाड़ों में अपने घर छोड़ रहे थे, जब झुंडों के नेता मारे गए थे।

तान्युदीर्णानि नारीणां तदा वृन्दान्यनेकशः शोकार्तान्यद्रवन्राजन्किशोरीणामिवाङ्गने

Large numbers of women emerged. O king! They ran around in sorrow, like young girls in an arena.

बड़ी संख्या में महिलाएं उभरीं. हे राजा! वे अखाड़े में युवा लड़कियों की तरह दुःख में इधर-उधर भागते रहे।

प्रगृह्य बाहून्क्रोशन्त्यः पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्पितॄनपि दर्शयन्तीव ता ह स्म युगान्ते लोकसंक्षयम्

They held onto each other's arms and wept, lamenting their sons, brothers and fathers. They were seen there, as if the world was being destroyed at the end of a yuga.

वे एक-दूसरे की बाँहें पकड़कर रोये, अपने बेटों, भाइयों और पिताओं के लिए विलाप किया। वे वहां ऐसे दिखाई दे रहे थे, मानो एक युग के अंत में संसार का विनाश हो रहा हो।

विलपन्त्यो रुदन्त्यश्च धावमानास्ततस्ततः शोकेनाभ्याहतज्ञानाः कर्तव्यं न प्रजज्ञिरे

They lamented and wept and ran around here and there. They were senseless because of sorrow and did not know what they should do.

वे विलाप करते, रोते और इधर उधर दौड़ते रहे। वे दुःख के कारण बेसुध हो गये और नहीं जानते थे कि उन्हें क्या करना चाहिये।

व्रीडां जग्मुः पुरा याः स्म सखीनामपि योषितः ता एकवस्त्रा निर्लज्जाः श्वश्रूणां पुरतोऽभवन्

Earlier, the women used to be bashful, even before their friends. They were shameless now and appeared in single garments before their mothers-in-law.

पहले महिलाएं अपनी सहेलियों के सामने भी संकोची स्वभाव की होती थीं। अब वे बेशर्म हो गये और अपनी सास के सामने एक ही वस्त्र में आ गये।

परस्परं सुसूक्ष्मेषु शोकेष्वाश्वासयन्स्म याः ताः शोकविह्वला राजन्नुपैक्षन्त परस्परम्

Earlier, they used to console each other in times of grief, even if it was of a mild kind. O king! Distracted by sorrow now, they ignored each other.

पहले वे दुख के समय एक-दूसरे को सांत्वना देते थे, भले ही वह हल्का-फुल्का ही क्यों न हो। हे राजा! अब दुःख से विचलित होकर उन्होंने एक-दूसरे को नजरअंदाज कर दिया।

ताभिः परिवृतो राजा रुदतीभिः सहस्रशः निर्ययौ नगराद्दीनस्तूर्णमायोधनं प्रति

The king was surrounded by thousands of such lamenting ones. He left the city in distress and quickly headed towards the field of battle.

राजा ऐसे हजारों विलाप करने वालों से घिरा हुआ था। उसने संकटग्रस्त होकर नगर छोड़ दिया और तेजी से युद्ध के मैदान की ओर चल पड़ा।

शिल्पिनो वणिजो वैश्याः सर्वकर्मोपजीविनः ते पार्थिवं पुरस्कृत्य निर्ययुर्नगराद्बहिः

With the king at their head, artisans, traders, vaiśya-s and those who earned a living from all kinds of work emerged outside the city.

राजा के नेतृत्व में, कारीगर, व्यापारी, वैश्य और वे लोग जो सभी प्रकार के काम से जीविकोपार्जन करते थे, शहर के बाहर निकल आये।

तासां विक्रोशमानानामार्तानां कुरुसंक्षये प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दो व्यथयन्भुवनान्युत

At the destruction of the Kuru-s, the women cried and lamented in piteous tones. A loud noise arose and oppressed the world.

कुरु-वंश के विनाश पर स्त्रियाँ करुण स्वर में रोती और विलाप करती थीं। एक ज़ोर का शोर उठा और दुनिया पर ज़ुल्म ढाया।

युगान्तकाले संप्राप्ते भूतानां दह्यतामिव अभावः स्यादयं प्राप्त इति भूतानि मेनिरे

It was as if beings were being scorched when the time for the end of a yuga has arrived. The beings thought that they were being destroyed.

यह ऐसा था मानो एक युग के अंत का समय आ जाने पर प्राणी झुलस रहे हों। प्राणियों ने सोचा कि वे नष्ट हो रहे हैं।

भृशमुद्विग्नमनसस्ते पौराः कुरुसंक्षये प्राक्रोशन्त महाराज स्वनुरक्तास्तदा भृशम्

At the destruction of the Kuru-s, all the citizens became extremely anxious. O great king! They were devoted to them and cried in severe grief.

कुरुवंश के विनाश से सभी नागरिक अत्यंत चिंतित हो गये। हे महान राजा! वे उनके प्रति समर्पित थे और गंभीर दुःख में रोये।
