Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 10: Vibhuti Yoga

The Yoga of Divine Manifestations · 42shlokas · Sanskrit with Hindi & English meaning

Chapter 10 Overview — Vibhuti Yoga

Chapter 10 of the Bhagavad Gita is Krishna's catalogue of the Divine's infinite expressions in creation — a poetic and philosophical tour de force that reveals God not as an abstract absolute but as the superlative of every category of excellence. Vibhuti means divine power, glory, or manifestation. The chapter contains 42 verses in which Krishna lists the most excellent, most powerful, most beautiful, most radiant aspect of each domain of existence and claims it as a direct expression of the Divine.

The context of Chapter 10 is devotional: Arjuna, increasingly moved by Krishna's teachings, asks to hear more about the Divine's manifestations and glories. He wants to know where to look for God in the world of experience. Krishna's answer is both humbling and exhilarating: look at what is most excellent in any field, and there you will find the Divine. "I am the Atman seated in the heart of all beings. I am the beginning, middle, and end of all beings." God is not beyond the world — God is the innermost excellence of the world.

Chapter 10 also establishes a central epistemological point: the source of all wisdom, all knowledge, all illumination is the Divine. "From Me alone come remembrance, knowledge, and their absence." This is not a statement about authoritarian control — it is a statement about the ground of consciousness. The capacity to know, to remember, to understand, to be confused — all arise within the field of the Divine awareness that is the background of every mind.

Key Teachings of Chapter 10

The Divine in Every Excellence

Krishna's list of Vibhutis is one of the most memorable passages in the Gita. Among the Adityas (solar deities) I am Vishnu. Among luminaries I am the sun. Among the Maruts (wind-gods) I am Marichi. Among stars I am the moon. Among the Vedas I am Sama Veda. Among the senses I am the mind. Among living beings I am consciousness. Among rivers I am the Ganges. Among mountains I am Meru. Among trees I am the sacred fig (Ashvattha). The pattern is consistent: the most excellent of every category points directly to the Divine.

God as the Innermost Self

The most important Vibhuti of all is stated quietly: "I am the Atman, O Arjuna, seated in the heart of all beings." Not Krishna the person — but the eternal Self, the unchanging witness-consciousness — is what dwells in the heart of every creature. The spiritual practice that flows from this is simple: honour the Divine in every person you meet by recognising that their innermost self is not different from the universal Self.

The Teaching on Divine Sanction of All Powers

Chapter 10 makes a sweeping claim that has profound ethical implications: "Whatever exists is indeed born of a spark of My divine radiance." Every human power — intelligence, beauty, strength, creativity, compassion — is a fragment of Divine glory expressing itself through individual forms. This creates a double obligation: to develop these powers fully (not hide them in false humility) and to use them as their true owner would — for the flourishing of all.

Practical Wisdom — Applying Chapter 10 Today

Chapter 10 offers a practice for eyes: begin noticing the most excellent thing in every situation you enter. The most insightful person in the room. The most beautiful quality in the most difficult person you know. The most alive moment in an ordinary day. Each point of excellence is, the Gita says, a direct footprint of the Divine. Training your attention to seek excellence cultivates both gratitude and the capacity to find the sacred in the ordinary.

What are Vibhutis in the Bhagavad Gita?
Vibhutis are the divine manifestations or expressions of God's glory in creation. In Chapter 10, Krishna lists the most excellent aspect of each category — the sun among luminaries, the Ganges among rivers, the mind among senses, Mount Meru among mountains — and declares these to be direct expressions of the Divine. The Vibhutis are not exhaustive; they are representative samples of God's infinite presence in the world.
How many Vibhutis does Krishna describe in Chapter 10?
Krishna mentions over 40 specific Vibhutis across the 42 verses of Chapter 10, spanning natural phenomena, celestial beings, human qualities, scriptures, animals, rivers, mountains, and cosmic forces. He concludes by saying that anything glorious, brilliant, or powerful is a spark of His divine radiance — making the list potentially infinite.
