History & Significance
Omkareshwar is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its name means 'Lord of Om Sound', reflecting the natural 'Om' shape of Mandhata Island where the main temple is located. The temple has ancient origins, with historical structures dating back to at least the 11th century CE, and has undergone various renovations and expansions over the centuries by local rulers and devotees. This site is unique for housing two Jyotirlinga forms: Omkareshwar on the island and Mamaleshwar (also known as Amareshwar) on the mainland.
The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is uniquely located on Mandhata Island, which is naturally shaped like the sacred 'Om' symbol, enhancing its spiritual aura. It is considered one of the holiest places for Shiva devotees, especially as it also houses the Mamaleshwar Temple on the opposite bank, making it a site with two primary Jyotirlinga manifestations. The temple is situated at the confluence of the Narmada and Kaveri rivers, making the area highly sacred for pilgrims who perform holy dips (snan) in the waters. The divine Narmada River is considered sacred in Hinduism, and a parikrama (circumambulation) of the island is highly meritorious.

The Story Behind It
According to the Shiv Mahapurana, the Vindhya mountain once performed severe penance to Lord Shiva, seeking to become greater than the Meru mountain. Pleased with his devotion, Shiva appeared and granted his wish. On the request of the deities and sages present, Shiva manifested as two forms of Jyotirlinga: Omkareshwar and Mamaleshwar, to bless the region and reside there permanently. Another legend states that King Mandhata, a powerful Suryavanshi ruler, performed intense penance to Lord Shiva on this island. Lord Shiva, pleased with his devotion, blessed him and agreed to reside there in the form of the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. The island is believed to have taken the 'Om' shape during this period of divine manifestation.
