History & Significance
Built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga. One of the Char Dhams. Famous for the annual Rath Yatra. The temple kitchen feeds 100,000 people daily.
One of the four Char Dhams. The Mahaprasad served here is considered the most sacred food. Lord Jagannath's wooden idols are ceremonially replaced every 12-19 years.
Why is it Famous?
One of the four Char Dhams. The origin of the English word 'Juggernaut' (from Jagannath's massive Rath Yatra chariots). World's largest temple kitchen — 700+ cooks prepare Mahaprasad for 100,000+ people daily in earthen pots using firewood. The flag on top always flies opposite to the wind direction. No shadow of the temple falls on the ground at any time of day. The Sudarshan Chakra atop the temple appears the same from every direction.
The Story Behind It
King Indradyumna dreamed of Lord Vishnu as a blue stone (Nila Madhava) worshipped by tribal chief Vishwavasu. When he sent Vidyapati to find it, Vishwavasu blindfolded him during the journey. But Vidyapati dropped mustard seeds along the path, which sprouted and revealed the route. When the king arrived, the deity had vanished. A divine voice told him to build a temple on Nila Parvat and float a log of wood in the sea. Vishwakarma (divine architect) appeared as an old carpenter named Ananta Maharana and agreed to carve the idols, but only if he was left undisturbed. After 15 days of silence, the queen opened the door prematurely — and found the idols incomplete, with no hands. Lord Brahma installed the unfinished idols and gave them eyes and soul. This is why Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra have their unique form without complete limbs.
