About Swami Vivekananda
Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) was the monk who introduced Hinduism, Vedanta, and Yoga to the Western world and ignited India's national consciousness. Born as Narendranath Datta in Kolkata to an aristocratic Bengali family, he was a brilliant student who studied Western philosophy, science, and logic at the Scottish Church College. As a young rationalist, he challenged his guru Ramakrishna Paramahamsa: 'Have you seen God?' Ramakrishna replied: 'Yes, I see Him as clearly as I see you — only more intensely.' This encounter transformed Narendra. After Ramakrishna's death in 1886, Vivekananda renounced the world and wandered across India as a penniless monk for seven years, witnessing both the spiritual depth and the crushing poverty of his country. On September 11, 1893, at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago, he began with the words 'Sisters and Brothers of America' — receiving a thunderous 2-minute standing ovation from 7,000 attendees before he had even started his speech. He went on to explain the essence of Hinduism: 'We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true.' His speech made headlines across America and established Hinduism as a major world religion. He founded the Ramakrishna Mission (1897) and Ramakrishna Math for service to humanity — running hospitals, schools, and disaster relief across India. He delivered over 1,000 lectures in America and Europe, wrote Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga. He died on July 4, 1902 at age 39 — allegedly achieving Mahasamadhi during meditation. His birthday (January 12) is celebrated as National Youth Day in India.
