Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 16: Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga

The Yoga of Divine and Demonic Qualities · 24shlokas · Sanskrit with Hindi & English meaning

Chapter 16 Overview — Daivasura Sampad Vibhaga Yoga

Chapter 16 of the Bhagavad Gita presents the Gita's most direct ethical teaching — a clear classification of human qualities into two categories: Daivi Sampad (divine wealth) and Asuri Sampad (demonic wealth). This is not mythology about gods and demons; it is a penetrating psychological and moral analysis of two fundamental orientations toward life — one that leads toward liberation, and one that leads toward deeper bondage and suffering.

The chapter opens with a list of 26 divine qualities: fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfast knowledge, charity, self-control, sacrifice, study of scriptures, austerity, uprightness, non-violence, truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, tranquility, aversion to fault-finding, compassion for all beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty, steadiness, vigour, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, freedom from malice and excessive pride. These are not requirements for admission — they are descriptions of a person who is genuinely free. They arise naturally as liberation deepens.

The demonic qualities are equally precisely described: not knowing what action to take or what to refrain from, untruthfulness, impurity, arrogance, excessive pride, excessive anger, harshness, and ignorance. The person of demonic orientation believes: "The world has no truth, no moral basis, no God — it is produced by mutual union and has no other cause than lust." Everything is for the self; others are instruments or obstacles.

Key Teachings of Chapter 16

The Divine Qualities — A Portrait of Freedom

The divine qualities are not moral obligations imposed from outside. They are the natural expression of a consciousness that has relaxed its grip on ego. Fearlessness (Abhaya) is first in the list because all other virtues depend on it: the fearless person does not need to lie, cheat, harm, or dominate. Compassion (Ahimsa and Daya) follows naturally from seeing the same Self in all beings. Generosity flows from the recognition that one already has everything essential. The divine qualities are less about "being good" and more about being free.

The Demonic Orientation — A Portrait of Bondage

The demonic person described in Chapter 16 is not a cartoon villain — they are recognisable in any era. They believe in nothing beyond the material and the personal; they see the universe as fundamentally random and without moral structure; they use others as means to their ends; they are driven by insatiable desire and the conviction that only they and their circle of interest matter. The Gita says such people "fallen into hell" — not as divine punishment but as the natural consequence of a worldview that creates suffering wherever it goes.

The Three Gates to Hell — Desire, Anger, and Greed

Chapter 16 identifies three "gates to hell" — three psychological patterns that reliably lead to destruction: Kama (insatiable desire), Krodha (anger), and Lobha (greed). These three reinforce each other in a destructive cycle: unfulfilled desire produces anger; anger produces further desire; greed amplifies both. "Abandon these three" is among the most concise prescriptions for human wellbeing ever offered. Not through suppression but through the recognition that their promises are empty — they take more than they give.

Practical Wisdom — Applying Chapter 16 Today

Chapter 16's list of divine qualities offers a practical self-audit. Which qualities on the list feel natural to you, and which feel like effort? The qualities that feel like effort point to where the ego is still protecting itself — afraid that generosity will leave you with less, that forgiveness will leave you vulnerable, that truthfulness will lose you advantage. The divine qualities feel effortless precisely when the ego's grasping has relaxed. Each virtuous quality you embody naturally is evidence of the inner liberation already under way.
